The Government and Lazy Thinking

Hi Robin, Thanks for your comments. And 'drain' is the correct word. What else would describe the effect gas prices are having on our wallets.

Yes, Rep. John Dingell of Michigan has it right in a parallel universe! It's that type of perception and representation that holds fear of backing, supporting and investing in the creation of alternative energy sources. Our dependence on oil is old school. When will we more on from this drain?

Kim, all is locked together in a cycle that has no end. As fuel goes up costs go up to transport, that cost is passed on as is all costs directly to the consumer. Without good, stay here, pay good jobs for Americans we have a major problem on our hands. I'm afraid the cat is out of the bag. Change Congress Change America is our only hope. Why, these politicans ALL have had their chance, all save none and have been found wanting. We cannot impact the choice for President but we can make a statement by voting them all out of office and replacing them, Then and only then will the message sound! Take someone with you, spread the word, if you want to make history lets make real history and take back America. Good job.

Hi Michael, It's true, there are many involved in the gas crisis/scandal. Wall Street has a great deal of responsibilty for increasing prices based on speculation. And truthfully, the US needs to tap into our reserves and begin drilling in Alaska, just to keep prices in check. I hate to see how this affects people at the consumer level, my family included. We need a strong leader in the US, who is not afraid of special interest groups, to make decisions that are in the best interest of the country.

Actually, we can once again thank the environmentalists for this one, ethanol is not only stupid, expensive, and not practical at all. It is forcing farmers to divert the corn crop away from feed production. Oh boy, that was a great idea. Plus, even though they now know all this, we would scrap the whole plan and get back to drilling for more oil and nuclear.

Your addressing truth once agin. That was another day and another time and we see where Ross Perot got haven't we. In fact lets look at Ron Paul. a man who does and says his beliefs. Where is he? Unfortunately and in my opinion a fact, we are an Easter Bunny World, buy the book by its cover crowd. Is not this campaign a confirmatin of that? We willr eap what we sow becuase we allow it, simple and pure. NO negatives toward you implied or intended. I am as discusted. Best wishes RTM

This is something I've thought long and hard about. And I've said in the past that our justice system needs an overhaul. I'm just not completely convinced that killing someone for their crimes is the answer. Sometimes I say to myself that if the crime is really heinous and there is absolutely no doubt about guilt, then yes, the criminal should be put to death. But how certain is certain? Can we ever really assign guilt beyond all doubt. Recently, a former employer of mine has started telling lies about my resignation. He has said that he had to fire me for being dishonest with him. This is not true, I quit, but any proof that I could drum up would be circumstantial. He and his family could put together a good story that they could all stick to and I would be the criminal. Translate this to a more serious allegation and I, a total innocent, could end up in prison or on death row. Fundamentally, I don't believe that any twelve people are going to be able to ferret out the absolute truth on a regular basis. For my sake and the sake of all innocent people, I think we should err on the side of caution. Don't think that because you are innocent of crime that you, personally, could never be found guilty of one.

Dear Dianne, thank-you for your comment. I do believe that the justice system needs to be updated. I also believe that the punishment has to fit the crime. There are people on death row that have raped and then murdered children. I cannot think of a more just punishment than the death penalty for those that have been found guilty. It will be a far more peaceful death than the ones that their victims endured. If we abolish the death penalty, what would a just penalty be for this type of heinous crime?

Kim, I agree with you in support of the death penalty. People used to claim prison is a place for convicted criminals to be rehabilitated and become productive citizens. These days I don't think they bother trying to bring out that old chestnut. When somebody repeatedly commits crimes and shows no intention of changing, termination is a viable alternative. You don't want to live by society's rules, maybe you don't need to live. Now all we have to do is watch out for the people who set the rules. Lord knows I don't want to be next because somebody like Jack Kevorkian decided I'm too old to be productive!

Danny, thank-you for your comments. I believe that we live in a time where enforcing the law is not very popular. People have many ideas that they like to throw out as "solutions" to problems, but when the question of accountability comes up, talking about it only makes me unpopular. These are the times to speak up, and in doing so, strenghtening out society. I've written more about accountability and our country on another blog if you are interested. Visit evoyevoy

We Americans consider ourselves the most advanced people in the world. We are intellectually advanced humans, continually seeking improved ways of doing and thinking. We are explorers and inventors who explore and invent to replace archaic theories, designs, ideas and attitudes with knowledge, truth, or at least the hope of something better. We're in the middle east today fighting to defend ourselves and others from what we consider archaic attitudes. Groups who would use terrorism to air their grievences instead of seeking an equitable solution. Women without rights or opportunities. We pride ourselves in our constitution, our justice system, our sense of right and wrong, and fair play. All of our heroic themes are rooted in mercy and justice. The death penalty must be abolished because it is inconsistent with our vision of ourselves. It is bound to the belief that justice is served in the "eye for an eye" concept. We reaffirm this thinking every time we put a murderer to death, and yet the thought of lopping off the arm of a thief is so barbaric to us, that we shake our heads in disbelief when we hear or read of a nation that still utilizes it as a form of punishment. In her article, Kim Bryant defends capital punishment because maintaining a life in prison costs taxpayers money, because some people have committed such heineous crimes they deserve "nothing better" and because some criminals have no value in our society...all flawed and inaccurate arguments. The death penalty is extremely costly to taxpayers, and permanently removing the worst criminals from society expresses, in no uncertain terms, that the criminal act outweighed its perpetrator's value to society. By abolishing capital punishment, New Jersey is reaffirming a fundamental American principal. It is challenging us to stop, evaluate, and to improve if a current system isn't working or fails to measure up to the standards we've set for ourselves. Americans are true visionaries because we have always been open to new ideas, a concept that, at its core, forces us to admit to the world that there's always room for improvement.

I beg to differ with you on your defense of keeping death row inmates alive. They have had their opportunity in life and have made choices that have forever altered the lives of many others. Why should they have the benefit of life when they have taken that very thing away from another? Being a just society means that there are consequences for actions. Those on death row have had the benefit of our legal system and have been found guilty. If we as a country remove consequence, we move closer to anarchy. And I want to live in a country that has clearly stated rules and laws for the protection of my family, my community and for a peaceful way of life.

Kim, the issues at the heart of everything is just what is enough? The New World Order, The Thousand Points of Light, the SPP and North American Union are all signs and symbols of why you felt an urge to write this article. Like a sickness that lays dormant and out of sight these are the underlying root causes of what is happening here and int he world today. We could talk for days on taxing. That said, the key to it all is that there is no difference between either party. They both have the same ideology and agenda and they put their money where their mouth IS NOT in their votes and deeds that support that ideology and that agenda. Just check the voting records and bills and you will find it all there. A very good article using a word that is no longer in vogue "Responsible". Best wishes, RTM

Yes, everything you say is fine for those who can afford. For those who have no means it is the bill collector or worse. Even when finacilly broke they do not let you run from your heathcare bills. My father in law who was on his death bed got a call from a bill collector the morning he died. He had been paying $5.00 a month, all he had because he was an honerable man and felt he did not want to be a "lowlife" as the collector used to say to him. Heathcare took everything from him and his loved ones. They left them with nothing even when they new his situation. Yes, and they got the tax writeoff! There is only one thing left for Americans. I am not advocating it I'm just stating the options and fact, own nothing and let the state pay, or die. Simple and pure. Healthcare in many cases is all about money, not health. Health in my opinion is for those who can pay. I apologize if I sound sarcastic it was not directed at you. I have lived "healthcare" up to my neck!
