I'm no Hypocrite

Dane, good to hear from you! This is a wonderful article. I do hope many who use this phrase to easily, will read and reconsider their thinking. I have taught this to my children and others in Bible study. And have used it as an example for myself. Constantly asking what is my motive? Thanks for the clarity on the meaning. Lord bless you and your family! Teresa

Thank you, Teresa. I do think this is a terribly abused word in our day. May the Lord overtake you with His blessings as you walk in His way!
When Your Past is Present

If only we would slow down long enough to evaluate our pain before we launch into another relationship or situation that will ultimately lead us right back to the same spot -- if we don't learn a different response. Great advise -

Thank you for reading and commenting. There is, indeed, too much of the "launcing into new relationships" as a remedy for pain from former ones. God bless you.

Dane, I could so relate. I wrote a little about my relationship with my dad, though left out the muck. I appreciate a man;s perspective. My husband experienced what you did, though his dad still lives and not once has he ever called us or even been to our home. But God in His grace, gave Art the opportunity to be different. The process is long and hard, but worth it! Because my husband was willing to humble himself before the Lord, he has been able to be an amazing father. My kids adore their father and I am blessed by the relationship he has with them. With both us us having no example of what an earthly father should be like, we came out alright because of our Heavenly Father. (Though far-far from perfect). Thank you for sharing your heart and experience and I do pray that many men will take your advice and allow God to break the cycle. God bless you!! Teresa
Comment by Dane Tyner (388) Dane Tyner (77 days 13 hours ago.)
Thank you very much, Teresa. What an "amen"! There is a word in the prophet Malachi about God "turning the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to the fathers", which I believe is sorely needed in our day. I am believing that God will use this piece to speak encouragement to at least a few men who need it. I'm glad that you and Art have found God's provision and embraced it. Good fruit is produced whenever we do. Thanks for sharing your testimony with us. God bless you and your home!

Teresa, you and I know every family is blessed but when a Mom and Dad puts Christ at the head of that family, many more blessings are realized. "Though far-far from perfect" is so true but as a child, I think we do believe our parents are perfect. Well, I did. You and your husband will be rewarded for setting Christ-like examples for them. Happy Father's Day to their Dad!

Decision Making 101
Comment by Sandra E. Graham (1,382) Sandra E. Graham (127 days 23 hours ago.)

Nice article, Dane. I often think about something I once heard about the person who thought to change his fate by taking a different road than he originally intended; only to find that that was fate's intent. Great article and some very good questions to consider, also. Sandra
Comment by Dane Tyner (388) Dane Tyner (127 days 19 hours ago.)
Hi Sandra,
Your comment makes me think of Ecclesiastes 11:6. There the writer speaks of different options which are apparently both good and right. Then he says, ". . . for you do not know which [activity] will succeed, whether this or that, or whether both will do equally well." We CAN overthink the choices before us, just as we can choose without due consideration. May God grant us balance in this. Thanks for your kind comments.

Comment by April Lorier (4,522) April Lorier (134 days 19 hours ago.)

Dane, the reason "Let me know if I can do anything for you" is ineffective is
(1) It puts the burden on the one needing help to do the reaching out + the "favor asking".
(2) It feels too much like "We'll have to do lunch sometime" which we all know is insincere.
I've noticed in the area where I live that the Jehovah's Witnesses movement is growing by leaps and bounds. And the reason is, they are mowing people's lawns, cutting their shrubs, taking them to doctor's appointments, knocking on the door with food in hand. They are putting "Christians" to shame! I just cringe.
When I had breast cancer and was bed bound for 2 months, I had friends that came over several times a day, put me in the shower, changed my sheets, washed my dishes, mopped my floors, and fixed me 3 meals a day. Boy, you sure find out who your TRUE friends are when you are totally helpless! '
Thank you so much for reminding us what New Testament Christians did! You did a great job!
Response from Dane Tyner (388) Dane Tyner : (134 days 18 hours ago.)
H April, Thanks for reading and responding with your own great thoughts. It is sad that some of the groups with the worst theology have some of the important stuff right. It is hard to find people who are wrong about everything, of course. Glad you found your TRUE friends faithful in your time of need. May others find us faithful, too.

When I almost delivered my daughter early, I had people jump in and take my children, bring meals, do my laundry, bathe my kids and put them to bed. Like you said, I would NEVER had asked for this, but took the people up on their offers. Good practical article.

Keeping Love Alive
Comment by Creative Blogger (5,220) Creative Blogger (146 days 2 hours ago.)

Hi Dane, great article and very valid points, but a part of me also thinks that those couples not talking are perhaps the couples who never really talked much to begin with.
We have relationships, not just romantic ones, but friendships too with many people for many reasons and the bond that ties us may not be about what we have in common or what we talk about. Certainly I have friends for whom there are awakward silences and others where we fight to get a word in.
Yet I value both friendships equally as they have different merits. Perhaps loyalty, kindness, trust.
In terms of romantic love, the man who stops helping a woman with her bags is one who never intended to do so in the beginning. He just lulled her into a false pretense, and act of chilvary where non existed.
The attractive qualities that can help to sustain relationships are not lost, but they can be fabricated when courting.
This is my feeling.
Response from Dane Tyner (388) Dane Tyner : (146 days 2 hours ago.)
Leah, you're right. The dynamics of every relationship are different because we are relating with another unique being. The chemistry is always, at least slightly, different. This is a delight of life. It would be boring if we were all alike. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings.
Why Sex Isn't Safe
Comment by Hannah Quinn (21,053) Hannah Quinn (152 days 6 hours ago.)

Dane,
With all the survival problems worldwide, I'm quite sure God is less than bothered by the sexual activities of American youth. Health problems are widespread, oftentimes self-inflicted, and are caused by many things, not just sex. I'd be interested to hear the religious side come out as strongly against smoking, drinking, obesity, lack of exercise and drugs as they do about sex. As your story portrays, even a young woman who remained celibate until marriage can contract an std. I'm very sorry for her, because her problems are more than the std alone, but what type of article would you write about, or sermon or lesson would you give if she had come to you with a self-inflicted disease, say Diabetes 2, which has nothing to do with sexual activity? I am genuinely interested.
Response from Dane Tyner (388) Dane Tyner : (152 days 4 hours ago.)
Hannah, I agree with you whole-heartedly that "the religious side" should speak strongly about issues other than the "sexual activities of American youth". In fact, I did. I addressed the drinking issue about as strongly as the sexual issues. Like you, I am quite disturbed about the growing problem of obesity in our nation. To me, it is an unmistakable sign that our culture is out of contol. Perhaps I will write about that issue one day, but I think I should shed about 15 pounds first (smile). On the other side of this obesity issue, Hannah, is another serious one, that of people who are obsessed with not having any body fat, looking hot, and doing really strange - even unhealthy - things to that end. I think God is interested in that stuff, too. I honestly wonder how you conclude that "God is less bothered by the sexual activities of American youth" than the "survival problems worldwide". Could He not be bothered significantly by both? Could He not be bothered by even more than you and I have raised in our little interaction here? I wonder how you derive your ideas of what bothers and does not bother God? I am genuinely interested, too. Thank you for taking time to read and respond.

hi dane,
with a 17, 20, and 22 year old, the idea of sexually transmitted diseases is only one, but a big one, of the reasons i fall off to sleep around 3 a.m. every morning!
kids DO NOT listen. i have had the talk, i have shared my own experiences from the 70's and 80's, and still, they will do as they like when mom isn't around.
i personally don't ever want my babies to have sex :), but i'd rather them take precautions if they are going to, than not.
i also do not believe in any way, shape, or form, that sex is anything God is worrying about in this day and age of masacres happening to our boys and girls in their 20's. i don't like it, but God's love, to me, is much stronger than abolishing one because they had sex, at any age.
i am merely afraid of the physical ramifications, as well as the psychological.
i will find out when i pass how wrong or right i am, and am willing to wait to find out, as i don't agree with sex in young people, but i don't stop loving them and dealing with them in a loving way if they do. i don't believe God, as our Father, does either.
thank you for a well written article,
best regards,
sue thom
Response from Dane Tyner (388) Dane Tyner : (154 days 19 hours ago.)
Susan, I know that parenting through the adolescent years is routinely disruptive to our sleep - well, at least for Mom's. I'm glad you have talked with your kids. I encourage you to keep talking. When kids know in their heart that a parent is talking to them because they care, they listen more than they reveal. It's true, we all do what we want to do; and no parent can absolutely control whether or not his/her child will choose to become sexually active. Neither can we control whether or not they will be sexually responsible (to "take precautions"), if they choose to become sexually active apart from marriage. Still, we can and should give them good information. Susan, I believe that in many places the souls of young people are "massacred" because of sexual sin. I KNOW there are "massacres" to reproductive organs because of sexual sin, that leave young women incapable of bearing a child of their own. What a rip-off! I remain certain that these tragic losses grieve our Heavenly Father, as do many of the terrible "front page" news stories. You have a great attitude regarding relating to the person who chooses wrongly. Indeed, we should love him/her. God does love them. Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts with me. May God bless you and your children.

Dane, this is good information presented well. I am afraid of what this world has become for our kids and grandkids. Excellent article Dane, this is my favourite quote ever: "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference." I also enjoy very much the 'footsteps in the sand' prayer/saying.
I agree with your article 100%. We can very much in time change how we feel and view the past. We can learn to see where we contributed to the problems or if that is not the case at least a lesson can be learned and useful advice passed to others experiencing similar things now. We can also learn the power of forgiveness.
Great stuff.

Discovering Self-Worth
Comment by Miriam Ber (72) (166 days 22 hours ago.)

can you actually prove that there is a "God"?
Response from Dane Tyner (388) Dane Tyner : (166 days 19 hours ago.)
Miriam,
No, I can't prove there is a God. No one can. It is one of those things which we must believe or take by faith. It is certainly not the ONLY thing I believe by faith. For instance, every time I top a hill on a two-lane stretch of road, I believe, I trust, I even bet my life (and sometimes my whole family's life) that there is not a vehicle headed right at me in my lane on the other side of the hill. I have habitually approached those hills in faith. I cannot PROVE there is no car coming to crash head-on with me. At the top of the hill, I will know. Someday, I may find that my belief on the hill proved to be wrong, and I may pay the ultimate price for my mistaken belief. In the past 40+ years of driving, believing what seems reasonable has brought peace on every such hill. In the past 35+ years of believing in and trusting God (which seems to me to be a most reasonable thing), I have found it to be extremely rewarding. There is a place, Miriam, where we shall all "top the hill" and then we shall KNOW if what we BELIEVED was accurate. I figure I am in the proverbial win-win situation. If my beliefs prove to be valid, the other side will be indescribably glorious. If, however, I am mistaken, I shall have lost nothing and gained SO much in THIS life. Thanks for reading and responding.

You are correct of course, people do keep score, especially with regards to gift giving! I'm not so sure we all keep score re being treated badly though. From a Prince to a Frog

Hi, I followed the Christian path for forty years. Now at fifty three I find myself following a path more in line with what Jesus taught and how he lived. Three years ago my wife and I started on a path of discovery and higher awareness of who we are and even yet we are discovering why we are here. Part of this was to discover that "God has put eternity in our hearts" (Eccl 3:11) and it is up to us to discover this source of Life. Our lives are now orientated toward helping others discover this inner eternity and assist them living lives of purpose.
Thanks, Dane, for sharing. We may not see things the same, but our goals are certainly the same.
Response from Dane Tyner (388) Dane Tyner : (170 days 20 hours ago.)
Jim,
Thanks for reading and giving me the feedback. I'm sure we don't see things the same. I don't see all things the same as my wife, my kids, my pastor, my best friends, etc. I can't argue with anyone "following a path more in line with what Jesus taught and how he lived." Though I believe it is missed in all church communities to some degree, and certainly in some grossly missed, THAT is what Christianity is really about. It is what THIS Christian is about. I wish you well in your spiritul journey. Blessings to you in Jesus' name.

When I meditate on God's word I find a special peace that I don't see in other
areas of my thinking. Thus from that I have devised a special personal way to meditate (which is almost like prayer) I take one word (for example Redemption) from the Bible daily
and (meditate) think about it all day every chance I get. This may sound
Shallow but I can't tell you all the rewards of it.

Leo,
Thanks for reading. Thanks for the comment. You probably know this, but the Bible word for meditate means exactly what you describe doing. It is to think and re-think and think again about some word of God to digest it thoroughly. Rather than meditate on our navel or try to think about nothing at all, we are to think on good things (Phil 4:8). And there is nothing better to think about than God's Word. Keep "pondering" the Word, Leo.

Thanks Teresa. Thankfully, we have a very patient God who is rich in mercy. Yes, you may print and pass it on. Dane

Hey Dane, Thanks for this article. My parents got to know God when I was a pre-teen, shortly after that, they began a nightly ritual of praying together before they went to sleep. Since they prayed out loud in their room, I often drifted off to sleep to the murmurs of their prayers from their room. I couldn't really make out the words, but I knew that they prayed for all their children by name and others with needs. Now they are elderly and they come to visit me in the winter. They still pray aloud each night and my children now have heard the same sounds before they go to sleep. I can tell you from experience, it is an incredibly powerful thing.

Thank you, Jean, for that wonderful testimony. When I was a boy, I had to try to sleep to far less pleasant sounds from my parents' room. Much of the passion for the work I do is rooted in my deep desire to see children experience something like yours and mine have.

Hi Dane, Amen to this article-especially the third paragragh. Half-hearted, pre-written prayers are probably not going to cause the heart of God to move much. It's the sincere, get down to the nitty-gritty concerns of the heart that make a difference. Good job! You are certainly a hugh blessing and asset to the SW family.

Dane, I love that you thought this one through. I was raised on "Now I lay me down to sleep" but I never saw my parents pray together. Perhaps if they had prayed earnestly with each other, at least, our lives would have been easier. You did an excellent job on this article. Congrats!

Hi Dane, thank you for sharing the Proverbs 31 man. I have one and I can tell you as a wife, it blesses me and gives me the courage and strength to be that Proverbs 31 wife with pleasure and complete fulfillment. I hope this article encourages many men.
Response from Dane Tyner (388) Dane Tyner : (180 days 18 hours ago.)
Thanks again, Teresa. I'm glad you have one, and hope this piece encourages many men, too. dt

Dane, I can only say one thing, this is an excellent article! Ok, maybe more than one as it's deserved. Not many think or speak of the "Proverbs 31" Man when it comes to this text. If I'm to have a mate again, he must be my counterpart as a Proverbs 31 woman. A work in progress, or a few chapters behind, perhaps, but on the path. Thank you for one dynamic message!

Good article, Dane. It was well written, too. I have a stone placque that says, "For me and my house, we will serve the Lord." I see it from my kitchen window every morning and it's a reminder.
