Why Should I Vote? The Pros and Cons of Voting
Brittany D. from USA: (9 hours 47 minutes ago.)
I'm Currently doing a project on whether the United States should change to mandatory voting or not. I also have to see if making voting day a national holiday (or moving it to a weekend) would make any difference in voter turnout at the polls. Could you please tell your opinion on these matters and why or why not you are against them plus reasons why? Thank you very much. Brittany

Good morning, Hannah! Yeah, we disagree on some things, but that isn't bad. The Electoral College has no use anymore, I don't believe. It was created in a time we didn't have mass media and did serve a purpose then of letting the people's voices be heard. Wikipedia has a decent overview of Electoral College and when I Googled those words other sites also gave good explanations. I don't understand your preference voting, either. Funny how people are so alike and cultures and customs so different. I will have to do a search on Australia's voting system. The candidate I wanted to vote for has dropped out of the race and if nothing changes, I will be voting for the one I believe will do the least damage! There is so much "election-speak" going on and many are confused because the candidates' actions often don't match what they say. This will be an interesting election. Thanks, again, Hannah, for your comments. I welcome the dialog and questions. Have a great day.

LM, I admit I don't fully understand the Electoral College. We have nothing like that here. We have preference voting which not all agree with. It means that if the candidate you vote for doesn't get in, your vote goes to your second preference. You can choose your preference or accept your candidate's choice. It means your vote is always counted. I like preferences because I can choose, for example, a green vote to back up my main choice. Can you give me a rundown or perhaps give me a link with a good explanation of just how the Electoral College works. It seems, from what I do know, that it is at least outmoded in modern America and, on the face of it, not all that democratic. But, I might have it wrong. We'll have to agree to disagree about mandatory voting. :) Cheers, Hannah

L.M. I come from a country where voting is mandatory and I can tell you, that for the vast majority of the people, they take their voting very seriously. Knowing they have to vote makes people take notice and think about the issues and the candidates. People don't actually want to waste their vote; they have to do it anyway, so might as well make it count. If someone truly doesn't want to vote, the fine isn't that big ($20-70) yet very few chose that option. (There are allowances for the elderly, infirm, etc.) Also, they can go along and avoid the fine but do what they like to the ballot paper once they enter the booth, but that's also very rare. I strongly believe in mandatory voting. Democracy and the right to vote must have the balance of responsibility and as much input from the people as possible to make it truly a democracy. I also think that not having mandatory voting just lets people off the hook of taking matters seriously and giving any real thought to how a nation is led. It opens itself up to interest groups, minorities and block voting having the power to decide how the bulk of the people are governed - hardly democratic where 'majority rules'. As far as I know about felons, once they have served their time, their citizenship rights are returned to them and they can vote. It is that way here, and I'm fairly certain it is that way in your country, although some States might have different laws about that. The answer is no doubt available through a search engine - or better yet, a library, especially for those studying civics. I hope I've given you some things to think about and I'm interested in learning your responses. Cheers, Hannah

Hannah, thanks so much for reading and responding. It depends on each state's laws whether or not a ex-felon can vote. I can see your point, it does seem like a good thing to require all to vote at first. Upon further reflection, I don't like the idea. I would like to see fewer government mandates in our lives. What we need are honest politicians that won't make promises to lobbyists and special interest groups and truly represent the people. In a perfect world, maybe it would really be that way. For now, voting is a privilege and a right. If people don't want to vote, it is a sad thing, but their choice. The current system (outside of the Australian ballot...thank you) has its flaws, (especially the outdated Electoral College) I don't think mandatory vote is the answer. Thanks for sharing your views; I respect and appreciate them.

American Idol - Is It Rigged?

With the amount of money involved and no penalty for bad behavior I have pretty much accepted the fact it is rigged and corrupt. Disappointing show and I think it may spell the beginning of the end for the show.

Hello, Anon. I appreciate you reading and commenting on this article. Yeah, you are probably right, but I still hold out hope. There have been a lot of explanations for Paula's critique of the second song before it was sung. I watched and really enjoyed "The Next Great American Band" that was on towards the end of 2007. I thought the musicians were better and the show was done well. I've heard Idol is being revamped; who knows what will happen next.

It could be that the judges have chosen their favorites and they say whatever. They are not always correct on music accuracy. However, if America really decides, then nothing the judges do or say will affect America. I don't know. I was enjoying this show in the beginning but have lost interest. I agree with who you think will be the last two and the final winner.

Thanks, Beckie, for reading and commenting. I think after Sanjaya last season, the producers wanted more control. I'm not sure how they can if America does truly vote, unless they manipulate the totals. Even if I learned it was rigged, I'd probably still watch. How sad is that?

Strange but this is show business. I didn't watch the show to see what Paula had said or started to say but rigged I just don't know. Favorites, well that is another issue. Yes based on opinions a bad word here or there sways the masses much like our politics do. The general consensus as I understand it is that David is the winner. Now which David is the real question? Next week the last female. After that, well the young man with the dreadnaughts [does it really matter] and then which David wins? Does that matter? The good ones will stick like Daughtry or Underwood. This crop, well I really don't think so, do you? I liked some that are already gone for talents sake. Best wishes.

Hi Robert, thanks for reading and commenting. I agree that some of the better ones have already been eliminated, especially Michael Johns and Carly Smithson. The MC, Ryan Seacrest has often reminded viewers to vote or their favorite may be gone the next week. No matter what happens, few will remember the names of most of these singers in weeks, even days to come. I have read that David Cook and Chris Daughtry are friends, pre-Idol days. Daughtry and Underwood are making great careers after Idol; hopefully the two Davids will also.

Robert, no offense taken. I know your views and I agree with a lot of what you have said. I, too, would like to see it all turn around. Our country is not in a good way and we are at risk of losing much more. I don't know how we can turn it around other than Godly intervention, but I am hoping and praying for our nation. For the first time ever, I am afraid for America. When values slip away, all other aspects follow and we are at a crossroads. There is so much more that needs to be done in addition to our financial state. I love our country and believe there is none better in the world, but we have not been good stewards of the abilities God gave us. In my area we have a state senator that does listen to the people and is slowly making change here. I have hope that this is the beginning of a turnaround, at least here in Texas. But, in the meantime, even if it is a little band-aid when we need stitches, this stimulus package may help. It may not. We will have to wait and see. In the meantime, thanks for this dialogue. You may be telling me "I told you so." It is always good to read others thoughts. Have a good evening.

robert melaccio sr.: (22 days 10 hours ago.)
Yes you make some good points and I did not want to sound so harsh in relpy and if taken that way I am sorry. Yet there is more to this in my opinion then just a stimulus. Let me ask you if we have decided we don't want to be known for our manufacturing then what, retail sales? Just what will Americans have as jobs? The fact is a lot of talk. Technology, common now ask anyone in the business what is happening to them and who gets the jobs. New green jobs, years away if ever. No for average people there is no future. We are in debt way higher then most know, our militray is in shambles in numbers and capability, over taxed and under strength and we make and buy the components they use to defend us offshore. That alone doesn't sound too swift for national defense. One could say read the economic UN Forum of Social Development 2004 and see for yourself what is and has happened. Read SPP and the projections by those in power and the spheres of influence already decided. No it is about time America woke up. If buying a new Bluetooth is the answer we are in bad shape. I do enjoy your writing and as you can tell it is one of my hot buttons. Sorry, no offense intended. Bets wishes and peace.

The stimulus is really for the haves. Those are the ones who don't need to fill up their gas tank, pay their electric bill or just pay a credit card down a little. In fact that money won't make a dent in their lifestyle in the least. They will get their check and buy or spend it on something or invest perhaps in a Foreclosed Home. The will buy something made offshore and help that nation and its people, most likely China. Americans are also helping China in that China owns and has financed that debt. You, although perhaps you haven't thought of it as yet, will have to claim it as income when taxes come due. Number one there will be no deductions on it so that will place you into a higher tax category. You will most likely owe more to Uncle Sam or Uncle Woo and if you get anything backor expecting it, verses owe, it will be a lot less back and a lot more you owe. So lets wake up Am,erica what is so hard about all this. It it is what it is Fools Gold and there is a price to pay. It is in my opinion a short haul get us re elected see how we good we are to you effort.

Hello, Robert. Thank you for reading and commenting. We may have to agree to disagree, though I do agree with you in part. Did you check out the links, by chance? The first one that gives the info on who will get what tells a different story than a benefit for just the haves. The more you make, the less you receive. I know things are not great economically in this country right now and I know we are in China's pocket, but that goes both ways. They need us as much if not more than we need them right now. I am not saying that is a good thing, but this country has decided that manufacturing is not what it wants to be known for. I'll take the rebate. It boosts my economy. No, I am not blind to the rest of what the rebate entails and I am truly awake. I appreciate your comments.

Helpful article, LM. I'm sure my refund will end up in the tank of one of our vehicles or one of the lawn mowers or the propane tank for cooking and heating or just cover someother replacement for a rise in cost--taxes, food, etc., etc. I certainly won't count on it for something extra or special. Great article L.M., and so true. I used to accept everything I received until I got on so many spammers lists, I was getting porn from Korea! I've changed my email address at least twice that I remember because of being unable to stop the spam. I've got to where I am very cautious, in fact I won't even open mail unless I have a good idea it is legitimate. One of the shrewdest scams you may run into is receiving a really authentic looking letter from a bank, logo and all even with a return URL by the bank name, etc. They will want you to click on a link to confirm something about your account. I've received a number of those but was fortunate enough that the first one was from a bank which I have no account with so I knew it was a fake. I have had several since, once from the bank I do business with. And one from Pay pal with whom I have an account, but instead of clicking on their link, I looked up the real email address for the businesses and forwarded the phishing letter to them. All banks will tell you they never ask for any such information as these allegedly do via email. Thanks for sharing.

I certainly would not put it past any Govt body to use tactics like this. Holly, thank you so much for reading and commenting. It is always good to hear from someone with firsthand knowledge of the problem. I am so sorry your daughter and your family have gone through all of this. What is her prognosis? Do the docs believe her health will return to normal eventually? It is sad that we have so much testing in place in this country, yet because China basically owns us and they don't test, we have no clue what we are being exposed to from all the imports. I am also left wondering who stamped the Aglo chalk safe? Amazing that the company was not held responsible. So many questions left unanswered with these situations. I wish you and your family well. Please, keep me posted of any updates you may hear of. Have you ever considered writing an article an posting it here? I wonder how many others are in the same situation as you.

In 2003 my 1 year old daughter was the cause of a nation recall of sidewalk chalk. At her 1 year check up we found her to have a lead level of 19. (20 is hospital admit) Finally we found that she had gotten the lead poisoning from side walk chalk made by aglo and company out of china. Funny thing is this chalk was stamped as safe. How did this get into our country as safe??? I will never, never let my child play with chalk again. She is now 5 and suffering from ADHD and has a very hard time in school. Sad thing is Target, Toys R us and Aglo and company got away with this.. They are going to keep doing this kind of thing because they do not get in trouble. They would not even pay my daughter medical bills. Kind of scary . My advise would be no sidewalk chalk is safe. Sorry

Kylie, I agree with you on mandatory voting. I think people would just vote for whosever ad they heard the most. That would mean whoever had the most money to pay for the most ads would win, not necessarily the most qualified candidate. I think it is great that your class is studying our nations government procedures. I'm sorry, I don't know about a convicted felon voting. I know that right is lost while in prison, but you may want to do some research to see if there is an amount of time that needs to pass before a convicted felon gets the right to vote again, if ever. Thanks for reading and commenting! Have a great weekend.

What if voiting was mandatory and everyone had to vote then everyones vote would count right? which I think that mandatory voting would be great because everyone would get the chance to voice their opionon but then the people who didn't vote would be fined. I'm a sophomore at a school in michigan and I take a civics class where were doing a debate project about the pros and cons of mandatory voting I haven't fully decided about my decision. Hi Sarah. Thank you for reading and commenting. Nah, I don't think mandatory voting would be a good thing for a couple of reasons. One, while it would guarantee a great quantity of votes, those who are doing it just because it is law wouldn't research what they were voting for or against and the results wouldn't be what anyone wanted or expected. Another reason, I believe less government intervention is a good thing. Those are two reasons and I could probably come up with more. I hope your debate goes well!

Thank you for this article. Bruce Dickson is my son. My wife and I have 6 wonderful children. They are all works in progress as are we all. Our oldest daughter got married the day before Bruce's final tryout. She is 22. He sang at her wedding. She is a delightful and beautiful young lady. I also carried a key on that same chain that went to the heart she had been wearing since she was 12. Her first kiss was at the altar. My new son in law expresses his tremendous gratitude. Bruce's passion is singing and acting if it involves singing. His and his sister life will be a little easier without old relationship bagage and committment will be easier without the familiar patterns of heart break and break up. They are both full of life and joy, their friendships abound and the world is their stage. I will let their lives be my judge. Thank you again.

Making a commitment to his future wife and sticking to it despite ALL of society telling hime otherwise. May God bless this young man. He is an inspiration to all of us girls out there that are looking for a true gentlemen with respect, commitment, and self control.

Thank you for reading and commenting. Self-control, it seems is not a word Hollywood and mainstream entertainment have heard of. I had forgotten about the boy/man comment, but yes, that steamed me as well. Bruce Dickson has shown what a real man is. Our society is so turned around that we can't see straight.

Actually, let's consider if any of these candidates is the great leader they profess to be. Like all the rest in office, or involved with government already, or in the past who are running and who are all suddenly professing we need a change in Washington one needs to ask just when did this bright light come on and Ok, did they forget they are the ones we want to change? Go down the list item for item, check their record of what they voted for and what they never showed up for and you will find by fact of deed they are in my opinion BOOKENDS and all the same in thought, word and deed by nature of their own actions. So believe what you want the proof is there for the taking. So the fact is we wilol have a new president but will we have the change we all supposedly and I do mean supposedly desire? The answer to that is a resounding and factual NO UNLESS we change them all. i support your article and think you did an excellent job as usual. I second your comments. Howevr, as you know by my writing I am for change via the ballot and via the boot, boot them all OUT! Best wishes RTM

Thank you, Mr. Melaccio, for reading and responding. Your comment is true. Change is a great buzzword, but it still seems to be the same old thing. I don't think I am alone when I say this Presidential election scares me, but, I am glad I have the right to vote. I have a friend who is currently in the hospital with a painful staph infection. She went to the doc on Monday to be told her wound from a previous surgery didn't look good and the next day she was to see another doc and probably be admitted to the hospital. The probem was, on Tuesday morning she had a previous engagement; she was to be sworn in as an American citizen. Not willing to miss that meeting, Tuesday morning she packed her bag for the hospital stay, took her oath with about 3,000 others and headed to the doctor. Needless to say, her story made me take a fresh look at voting. Even if I don't like the results, I do have a say.

Very few candidates I really like ever win. I'm a maverick and therefore tend to vote for maverick candidates. Those candidates tend to lose to the more mainstream, centrist candidates. But that has never discouraged me from voting. I registered promptly when I turned 18 and have rarely missed an election since. Contrary to the conventional foolishness, I believe registration and voting should be less (not more) convenient. Getting a driver's license is inconvenient, yet people still do what they have to do to get them. If someone thinks more of their driving privilege than they do of their right to vote, do they really deserve that right?

Terry, I agree with you and it is sad state of affairs that we take it lightly. People don't think of voting as something that contributes to their day to day living, so they put that responsibility aside. How wrong they are. I am thankful that I have the rights of being an American citizen including voting.

Are Waterbeds Making a Comeback? The Pros and Cons of Owning a Waterbed

Our waterbed business has been steadily increasing for the last 2-3 years in softside waterbeds. However a significant decrease in hardsides has taken place with the exception of replacement parts. Many of the new softside owners are previous waterbed people who decided for one reason or the other to leave a waterbed and buy some other type of mattress. I think it's just like any other mattress, get a good one. Nice to here others are having good waterbed experiences. One more footnote there are still many doctors and chiropractors who suggest to their patients the idea of waterbeds. Walk into a regular mattress or furniture store and you will here no such thing. Are Waterbeds Making a Comeback? The Pros and Cons of Owning a Waterbed

I Have had water beds since I was 19, I am now 53, they last about 8 to 10 years before losing some elasticity. I am on my 5th one, they keep getting better as time goes by. My first waterbed was a full wave but I was young, it was a great bed. This latest one is 100% waveless or so it says, but not much movement and way more supportive. I tried a soft side but didn't like it I couldn't get use to the foam border, it felt constrictive to me, so I sold it to someone (for almost full price luckily) and got this hard side, that's why I said I have had 5 waterbeds, but I only used the softside for a few months. I have moved to higher waveless beds as I went and the support is great. I lived in southern CA. during the first 2 beds, and I can tell you that during a 5 scale or greater earthquake no one I knew could move out of their beds, water or not, you couldn't stand up even if you did get out. My back is very bad from injury and the only time it feels better is when I'm in bed and when I first wake up. So get a 90% or higher waveless and your back will love you for it.

High five! I love our waterbed and when its time is over we will get another one. Thanks for the heads up on soft sides. I don't think I would want one. I am one who likes the gentle motion when one of us moves of a dog (big dogs) jumps up on the bed. Thanks for reading and commenting. Seems waterbeds are not a thing of the past after all!

Hey, LM. I can tell you don't live in "earthquake country" because you missed one downside point: in an earthquake as severe as the Northridge Quake was, you will not be able to get out of your bed! My long-time friend, Ann, swore by waterbeds until the quake hit. Trapped in her bed, being tossed about like a rubber ball, she bought a "sleep number bed" the week after the quake. Ha!

My husband and I have had a waterbed for 25 years. We've replaced the waterbed mattress 3 times, and each time they get better, with more baffles, so less waving. My only concern is - is it to heavy for the floor boards. I have visions of it some day crashing through the floor to the room below us. I didn't worry about this until just the last couple of months. I feel that all that time may weaken the boards. Any comments?

Hi Paula, Thanks for your question and for reading! No, your bed won't crash through the floorboards because the weight is distributed over the space. We have almost always had our bed on a second floor.

Much like asbestos, people once played with these substances without a worry in the world. Of course there are reasons why the life expectancy of the average person has increased. We've stopped swallowing mercury, inhaling asbestos and most of us are now juggling far less swords on a day to day basis. On a serious note: mercury can also affect pregnancy as high levels can be very harmful to the development of the featus. This is one of the main reasons they suggest you don't eat deep sea fish such as swordfish, because over time these fish can build up dangerous levels of mercury that we then consume.

Thanks for your comment. Living in the south, I have noticed that people tend to ignore tornado warnings because they are common. I think we have developed an "I don't think it will happen to me" attitude. Hopefully, you won't ever have to use your basement for storm purposes, but it is nice to know it is there.

Good general information. I would alert all this is available almost everywhere. But the sad fact of evacuation is where will you go? The buildings they tell you to go to are not Hurricane reistent and will be packed, you can't get on the highways and as for gas forget it. The real question is survival until and if the government can react. So be ready to get out of the problem areas asap, don't wait. The haves just do not worry, they have the means to go. Make sure you have shelter, food, clothing medical and everything else in the disaster planner. Wait and you got problems. A good first start heads up. PS: Sadly, I did Disaster Planning all my life and people do not get ready until necessary.

I agree, it is hard to know where to go, or ever whether to evacuate. Since we are not in a storm surge area, we opted to stay put. My husband's job places him in disaster planning for IT. He has learned much also. I have decided, after living in CO for many years and then in the south for the last 16 years that I'd rather weather a blizzard than a hurricane/tropical storm. In a blizzard, you stay at home and wrap in blankets. You can cook outside and your cold food doesn't spoil because you can place it out in the snow. Much harder to deal with is no A/C, food spoiling and the humidity that follows and rots things away. Thanks for your comment.

Being a Mom is the most rewarding career choice in the world. They do grow up too fast, and we do wonder if they are ready to face the world...get married...have their own children. We have to trust in God, because the foundation was laid in Him, and thankfully He is always with them....when we can't be.
