PE-Design Embroidery Digitizing Software: Getting Started
Comment by Marian Reich (0) (28 days 20 hours ago.)

I am brand new to the whole embroidery world and just purchased a machine. Before I invest any money, I want to make sure that I spend it wisely. I want to be able to download designs and have more control of them - dizitizing? What I would like to know is should I even bother with buying PE-Design Lite for $300 (around) or should I just jump into the fire and purchase PE-Design 7.0? I appreciate your help and look forward to coming back to your site for more information. Thank you, thank you! Marian
Deb Schneider from Windstar Embroidery: (28 days 19 hours ago.)
Hello Marian,
Welcome to the fabulous world of embroidery!
I wish there was a quick and easy answer to your question but to be honest, only you can decide where to begin.
I think the easiest way of determining how to begin is to visit your local embroidery stores. More than just one. Ask questions, view demos and ask for demonstrations on machines and different types of software. Make sure you also request information about software lessons and technical help; when, where and how often. Notice how helpful and knowlegeable the sales people are and how willing they may be to spend time with you to help you with your questions. Believe me, if they are not interested in educating you about their product before you buy, they certainly will not be interested in helping you once you've purchased.
The more difficult question is how committed you are to embroidery. Is this going to be just a hobby? Or, could this turn into a small business? If you are looking for a wonderful hobby, you've found it! And, there are many different types of software and machine packages that would fit any enthusiast's pocket book.
If you are entertaining the idea that this would be a long term commitment that might become a viable business, then you should certainly view your options in this way and make your investments with a long term goal in mind.
I hope this is a tiny bit helpful to you. I wish you the best of luck!
Applique Tutorial for Machine Embroidery

Sometimes the fabric I use seems to pull away from the final stitch, kind of unraveling, then the fabric is left hanging there unattached and looks bad, plus some of the edges haven't come off yet, but look like, in a good washing or two they could! Is there some kind of liquid I could put on the edges to keep them from pulling or to tack down the pieces that have come disconnected?
Deb Schneider from Windstar Embroidery: (114 days 18 hours ago.)
Hi Elizabeth, As you may know there are probably many ways to create or digitize an applique. You just need to find one that works best for you so you're not doing a lot of extra work to "clean up" after you're done. But I have found my favorite digitizing technique to create one is to use two tack down stitches. The first tack down stitch allows you to trim the fabric very, very close; in fact you may even accidentally snip a few of the stitches. I just use a running stitch for this with a very narrow pitch. Once trimmed a second zig-zag tack down is applied. This might be a wide zig-zag or a V stitch. This can help in two ways. It will tack down the fabric again making it more secure so that it cannot pull away so easily and it will also tend to catch many of the threads or frays that are on the edge of the fabric and tuck them in more securely. Plus, if you snipped a little close on the first tack down it will re-secure the applique. Last I make sure that the final satin stitch is wide enough to completely cover the edge of the fabric. If the appliques are constructed this way, then you won't need any type of material glue to secure them.

Hi Deborah, I have the pe-design 7 but don't seem to be able to convert a logo from a picture to stitches without loosing a lot of the information. Is there a programme that will do this in auto-punch or do i have to manually punch the stitches if so is there a quicker way of doing this?
Carl
Deb Schneider from Windstar Embroidery: (91 days ago.)
Hi Carl, As most professionals would agree, manual punch is the best way to create quality constructed embroidery designs. The time involved in manually creating a design just depends on the skill of the digitizer and the complexity of the design. Believe it or not the auto-punch feature embroidery hobbiests and enthusiasts enjoy today was invented for professionals as a means by which to quickly review a design and to create a cost quote for their customers. But professional digitizers still create their embroidery designs manually thereby maintaining total control over all the elements in each individual design. Most digitizing packages are accompanied by an "auto-punch" feature of some kind. The abilities of these features vary widely depending on the software package. If you prefer to use the auto-punch method of digitizing, finding the right one with the features you want just requires shopping around a bit until you've located the one that best suits your needs. I am new to machine embroidery and just got the Brother SE270d. I would eventually like to do my own digitizing. I know I must get a reader/writer box but should I start with PED Basic or would getting the PE Design 7 do the same thing as Basic and then I already have the digitizing to practice, practice, practice with?!
Anonymous: (62 days 9 hours ago.)
Hi Debby, If you want to get into digitizing, then PED Basic will do nothing for you! Basic is only a means to look through and save designs onto the PED Basic card via the card reader/writer that comes with it. You have to get PE Design 7 (or 5 or 6 -- older versions) to do any digiting.
MJ
Deb Schneider from Windstar Embroidery: (154 days 1 hour ago.)
Since the reader/writer card is considered the security device for the software program PE-Design, I would highly doubt that any other reader/writer box would work.
Hopefully you have an additional USB port you can use for PE-Design's reader/writer box. If not, you might want to check with your local computer store to see if you can install an additional USB port in your computer so that you would not have to unplug one device for the other when using them.

I was told to use manuel punch in lay- out and editing for better results and control . I went to the help menu . Still don't understand!! It said is best when you draw over a picture but i can't get a picture in this , i can if i use the wizard . this is not what i want to learn ,that is to easy and not very good all the time depending on the design. I want to learn the other ways . I need to be taught hands on.Any Advice would be much appreciated.

How do I get the picture of my design to show on my computer?
Jessica from Illinois: (191 days 1 hour ago.)
I keep getting a message that says "Please load an original card." I have to ask, how much more original can you get out of the box? :) After numerous calls to the very unhelpful Brother Customer Support, I downloaded the new version of PED (7.0), and am now having even more problems! My card reader will not connect to the computer. And when you click to save something to the card, it tells you that the reader is not attached. I'm about ready to give up! Any advice you could send my way would be appreciated.

Hi, I am, having the same problem. I am connected, but it is not reconizing my connection. I have gone into the settings of my my computer, and it is saying it recognizes the new hardware.
Anonymous: (196 days 19 hours ago.)

I have Ver4 and Ver6 PE Design. My computer crashed and now I need to install them on a XP. How do I do this? Do I need to install both of them? Do I need a special driver for the XP? My old computer was a 98. I can't find a serial number. Where would it be located? I found a number on the discs but I think that is just a disc number not a serial number. Thanks for any help. Re the seeming inability of PE Design 7 to convert fonts to embroidery; the problem only occurs when you type a string of characters with an included "space" (like typing 2 or more separate words). I figured out that you must "Insert" a space between the words...in the characters screen, when you arrive at the point where you would normally hit the "Space Bar", simply select the first blank spot in the character set and click "Insert". Voila!!

Deb Schneider from Windstar Embroidery: (281 days 12 hours ago.)
Hi Deborah,
I am not a hardware specialist but I believe that there are some restrictions as to how the reader/writer can be hooked up to your computer due to the fact that it is the security device for the software. The best advice I can give you is to contact your local Brother dealership. They should be able to help you with any patches, upgrades or hardware specialties you may need with your specific computer needs.
Deborah from Baytown TX: (281 days 14 hours ago.)

I can't get Pe-design to recognize my card writer hooked up with a usb cable. My printer is even a usb cable. Old computer was the old kind of connection and that was where my unit worked. Any help appreciated.

I have the same problem as the person above... It will convert anything as long as it is one word... the moment I try to convert two words it refuses. However, this only happens on one computer of 3 that I have it installed on. I can go to any other computer and try exactly the same thing and it work fine. I didn't know if it had something to do with the upgrades on Windows like I've had happen before or if someone knew... Please let me know if you have any other info...

i'm comming to byhalia in june and maybe we can meet each other and you can teach me somethings about the new pe design 7 . i have the first one that came out . the one called the basic and i want to learn more before i spend more money . would you please show me??
Anonymous: (1 year 213 days ago.)
Hi Jen in San Diego,
I'm sorry to say that you will not receive ANY help from Brother's tech team. I have been using PE-Design for more than three years and I have NEVER received a response to any of my questions. They are completely lacking in customer tech support.
With that said I know exactly what problem you're talking about and it isn't you , your computer or anything you did. Don't bother un-installing and re-installing, that will not help.
The program has difficulty in converting True-Type fonts to stitch. Sometimes it happens when you first open and use a font in your designs, other times it will happen when you have already converted the font to stitch and are editing the very same font. It could happen like you said, on one word or on a sentence. The font feature is not sophisticated enough in it's programming to do a perfect job of converting.
The only thing that I have found that works is to continue to try to convert the font several times. If this does not work - save your design and then hit your "new" button at the top of your menu a few times. Then open your design and try again. If you get the same result, save your design and close out of the program. Re-open and it should convert the font to stitch.
Unfortunately there are no guarentees it won't begin happening again as soon as you've converted the font a second time.
I will tell you this, some fonts are not convertable. So, depending on the font you are trying to convert - it could be the font itself too.
Upgrading to version 7.0 will not solve the problem either - it exists in 7 as well.
I hope this has helped. Please feel free to contact me at Windstar Embroidery if you have any additional questions about the program.
Elaine: (91 days ago.)
Hi all,
I had the same problem with TT fonts when i upgraded to Ver 7, it took me three weeks waiting for Brother to get back to me - in the meantime i had un-installed and tried everything else i could think of.
Did a complete system restore - then started to load things back on 1 by 1 and tested it each time TT fonts were still not reading spaces - so i could only get 1 word up.... then i tried it with Norton taken off and it worked.
I'm not saying it will work for everyone, but mine just did'nt like it.
I have left norton and use a different one now - all is working fine.
jen from san diego: (1 year 213 days ago.)

I have PE Design 6.0 and just recently started having a problem with it! When I try to type more than one word, it tells me that the font cannot be converted and that there may be an error with the program. So, I unistalled and reinstalled the program with hopes that it would fix the problem and it didn't....any suggestions would be great!! I love the program, but at this point would not recommend it because Brother's tech team has still not responded to an email regarding the issue!

Thank you for your VERY INFORMATIVE review of Pe-Design 6.0 I recently bought a Brother machine and after a few weeks needed MORE so I just put down a deposit on Pe-Design (they can't keep them in stock) Anyway, I haven't been able to find any real info on the product until reading your review! I am so excited to get it so I can truly be creative and make some awesome and fun stuff!! Thanks again! Jen K
Anonymous: (2 years 98 days ago.)
Dear PT,
I would recommend contacting your local Brother dealer with regard to any hardware questions you may have. I think you will probably need to upgrade the writer box to have PE-Design version 6.0. But, Brother will be able to answer your questions about that issue.
PE-Design 6.0 has all the options of versions 4 & 5 plus many more. If you want to digitize, and you want to create beautiful professional embroidery designs; PE-Design 6.0 is the perfect software package!
Anonymous: (2 years 99 days ago.)
I have PE-DESIGN version 1.1 and the reader is connected with RS232 instead of USB. Will the reader work with Version 6.0 upgrade without USB connection? Also, does version 6 cover all the functions of versions 4 and 5? I am considering buying the upgrade but not sure which one I should get. THanks. PT
