What Are Your Pet Peeves?
Comment by Rob Trahan (168) Rob Trahan (19 hours 44 minutes ago.)

Pet peeves? Where to start?!? I think my biggest pet peeve, at least right now, is commas in plural words (of course it's grammar related ...). Commas are for possessives and conjunctions, not plurals. The next time I see an my family listed as "The Trahan's" I'm going to do something. I don't know what, but it's going to be big! There are more, but they're probably tied more to my OCD tendencies than anything that other people do. Although I'll second the peevishness of drivers who take advantage of a lane ending.
sue thom from nj: (1 day 14 hours ago.)

hi laura, there is not enough room on this form for all my pet peeves. how about paying good money to see a doctor, but having to wait for over an hour in the waiting room, and then they call you in, you get all excited, and you are waiting in the patient room for another half hour, but they don't reimburse you for your time? (yeah, i got to use the underscore)
how about people who's cars must be so much nicer than anyone else's that they have to park in 2 spaces so they don't get hit. hmmm, shopping carts can roll.
one of my biggest pet peeves, since i do my heavy shopping at wal-mart, and odds and ends at our town's A & P, and i'm in the express aisle with someone who just bought out 2 aisles? or thinks 12 bottles of soda counts as one because "it's the same thing"and then, they add their other 20 items, fumble for their credit card, and end up writing a check.
or the fact (which i have brought to the attention of the manager every 6 months or so for 18 years) that you have to walk through the whole store, and all the way down the last aisle for milk and bread. we all know why they do it, i just wish they would stop!
this was a well written, clever, funny, and true article.
thanks for sharing,
best regards,
sue

Sue-Thanks for commenting! I agree with you!! I think it is worse to go through all of that at the doctors office and then tell you that it is a virus and nothing can be done. I can't tell you how many copay fees I have wasted plus that long wait to be told there is nothing that can be done! So amen, sister! thanks for stepping up to the plate and sharing your pet peeves as well! Have a great weekend! -Laura
Teresa Ortiz: (3 days 7 hours ago.)

Hi Laura, gee, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry :-) I am with you on the pet peeve list, sometimes it just feels good to have a pitty party and then repent later. My biggest pet peeve is the prayer request thing! "hey, please pray for Judy, she is having and affair with with Karen's husband and they might be pregnant. Pray for God's grace in their lives." Names have been changed to protect the innocent. Spare me.

Hey, you were on my mind this morning, so I thought I would send you a little note. You must need the extra prayer today ((smiles)). I was going to send you a little personal e-mail, but noticed you don't have that option. Write to me if you feel comfortable doing that. For now I will sing you a song, well, a portion of one anyway. "O... be careful little tongue what you say, O be careful little tongue what you say, for the Father up above, is looking down in love, so be careful little tongue what you say....

Good job tonight! I will be praying for you tomorrow. And I will definetly pray for your son. Yes, it is just a game, but it's natural to want to see your child succeed. It's how God feels about us. He is cheering for us! We just have to cheer with holiness :-)

Hi Laura, you poor, poor soul!! (hugs & smiles)) I was a loud mouth mom right up until the time I was responsible for recording the game. I could not believe how much I was yelling! That was quite a lesson. Its hard not to get caught up in the moment. And your son had great advice! They don't get embarrassed by us if we are yelling good things. Hang in there girl, I will be praying for you! Lord, put a muzzle on Laura's mouth. In Jesus name, Amen. hee, hee. It's what I prayed for myself. It worked. Blessings to you!!!

Teresa! I have so been thinking of you and praying for you! Missed talking through the comments lately! Have you had the retreat yet? I have been praying for you, but forgot when it was and couldn't find the comment! I hope things are well!!! God heard your prayers-I did not call my husband once during tonight's game, (granted he had me hold his cell phone.:)) I also pretended I had duct tape on the stands and did not move the entire game! Pray for me tomorrow as he has tryouts for a spot on the All Star team-pray for him and that I am encouraging while all the while I am nervous about it all! It is just a game-why am I so nervous? anyhow, blessings to you!

Hi Laura,
I enjoyed your article. It brought back many memories of my own grown children playing sports. It also caused me to remember when my son was seriously hurt during a football game, with months and months of rehabilitation therapy ahead of us. Because of that accident, I instantly recognized that the score didn't matter and it is just a game. Try to sit back and enjoy. Take Care Kimberly

hi laura, with 3 kids that played basketball and softball, i know of what you speak! you just get caught up. in our district, they made every parent sign a waiver that they wouldn't get out of hand, or they'd have to leave. it helped bring awareness to most, but, of course, not all. so, you see, it's a bigger problem than maybe even you thought. i once witnessed a 5 foot woman coach jump on the back of the 5 foot referee. not a pretty sight! i guess parents need to be seen, and not heard, unless it's clapping. this was a well written, interesting article, thanks for sharing, best regards,
sue
Comment by Laura Trahan (29,453) Laura Trahan (9 days 19 hours ago.)
Sue-Thanks for commenting! I can not imagine the scene of a woman jumping on the back of the referee! I pray I never go that far. I once read an article about things that scare men. One of the top on the list was watching their kid play sports because they want them to not fail. I think it is harder on women because we want our kids to be happy! Being a parent of a perfectionist drives those nerves in gear and I am working on the output of those nerves! Hopefully, I won't get too caught up and yes, I have signed that waiver every year! Thanks for sharing and always being so supportive to all the writers at Searchwarp!

Laura without trying to sound patronizing I feel like you do and you say it well as you always do, but I have come to realize a long time ago, sort of an epthiny, these peolpe just do not have our inetrests in mind. When they say they hear our suffering it is not "our" suffering but those profit margins that went down. Their cronies and fellow haves whoa re gurting. Just ask where do the millions go? What actions do they always seem to be able to do immediately? When it comes to takingc are of their own they are right there for them. If a man can say outright "Money always trumps peace" a fact right out of our presidents mouth. If a man professes to be a leader but cannot unite even his own. If they have made their bed a long time ago, then why would we ask why? We already have the answer. You stated it quite well. It is in my opinion time we opened our eyes to it and did something. We have lost the Presidency no matter who gets in and the rest whwell if we elect them we deserve what we get and in my opinion we will get because it must come to be. As always with best wishes RTM

How To Style Your Baby’s Hair
Shannon from BC: (24 days 1 hour ago.)

I'm curious if there is anything that can be done when the baby is younger and the hair is still very short. My little girl is only 4 1/2 months, but she still has most of the hair she came out with, except for the bald spot from sleeping.
She has some hairs longer than others and the bottom hair at her neck is doing the duck tail thing and she has about two inches on top. I'm nervous to cut it though in case I make things worse. Her hair is very fine and wispy, so there's no point of putting clips, they just fall out!
Any suggestions at all would be great! Thanks!
Response from Laura Trahan (29,453) Laura Trahan : (23 days 10 hours ago.)
Shannon-this is typical of baby hair. If you take her to a professional, they most likely will trim the ducktail for you and just make it even for under $7 usually. However, I would advise just waiting it through. Baby hair grows fast. There are some very tiny little clips available that just open, do not snap that may work. My best advice though, although it probably isn't what you want to hear, is just wait another month and see what the hair does. Also, keep her turned to try to lesson the bald spot. A haircut can spur the growth. It just depends how long you had envisioned it before the first haircut. You don't want to take away that memory. Anyhow, I hope I was some help! I am sure your baby is gorgeous either way!!!

I know it is God's will, but certainly not mine!! It's only a 16 hour drive and she will be near both sets of Grandparents and several Aunts and cousins, but it is still hard. Sigh. Glad you got a good laugh. I suppose I should be glad, the Lord is giving me lots of new material for Retreats. Pray for me as I will be speaking at a Mother-daughter tea on May 10th. Laura, so many memories your article brought back to mind. I had one like your Hannah and many days were a struggle. My older daughter was obedient and easygoing, wanting to please. Nap times and bed times were peaceful. With my second, life changed. What I thought were wonderful parenting techniques totally bombed with this little one. Nap times were a struggle and I usually spent a good 1/2 hour laying by her so she would go to sleep. The doctor's office - oh my! If it were not for the "I Spy" game it would have been torture. But, she was my snuggler, the one who fussed for independance, but never really wanted it. She is still a snuggler as an adult and loves to be in close proximity to those she loves. I agree with you totally. Being home with your kids is worth it. While I worked part-time most of my kids' growing up years, I still was blessed to have much time with them. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane. They grow up faster than you can imagine.
Response from Laura Trahan (29,453) Laura Trahan : (24 days 21 hours ago.)
LM-Thanks so much for the comment and encouragement!! Hannah is a snuggler when it suits her, but fights for independence continually. It is such opposite, but she does it! Our two sound like they have a lot in common! thanks for the I Spy tip, I will have to remember it! Thanks again-Laura

What Your Child Needs To Know For Kindergarten

Thank you SO much for this information! My daughter will be starting Kindergarden this coming Sept. and I was nervous she wouldn't truely be ready... She has been in daycare since she was 6 weeks old, also attended 3 months of head start, and is now at a kindercare center where they have a 4 yr. old curriculum.. So I think she's ready, I may not be.. haha For me, school was difficult, and I just don't want her to struggle... She is SO very intelligent, and now from reading your list, I found out, she knows and can do everything, if not more, of the things on your list, so I think she's ready... the question is, am I!? Thanks again!

hi laura,
this was one of those thought provoking articles. i, too, believe that the fact the a person doesn't contribute enough money is necessarily the problem, but what his thoughts about being charitable are. if there isn't enough money, there are services that need volunteers, etc. it aspires to where one's heart is, and possibly their greed.
thanks for a good article,

Obama’s Financial Giving Is Lacking
Comment by Dianne Lehmann (1,879) Dianne Lehmann (32 days 5 hours ago.)

I think the issue should be more about how well those seeking public office spend their money. Can they be sensible about spending or are they frivolous.
Also, how much money you have in savings and how much you feel you can give to charity is always a personal call. Are you asking everyone to adopt a lifestyle similar to yours? Just because you might be comfortable making do with less money than someone else doesn't mean that they should be comfortable with less. And I don't believe a person's worthiness shoud be determined by how much or even if they give to charity.
Response from Laura Trahan (29,453) Laura Trahan : (30 days 20 hours ago.)
Dianne, thanks for the comment. I agree with your first statement. I certainly don't want to entrust the budget of the country to someone who can't balance their own! But I do think it is important to question why someone who is such a big proponent of the government providing everything for everyone when he hasn't done anything on his own to help. Why would I want a President who is charitable with my money when he isn't charitable with his own?
Comment by Creative Blogger (3,587) Creative Blogger (32 days 16 hours ago.)

I think you raise a very valid point Laura, there is a big difference between talking about what you believe in and talking about what your speech writer and spin Doctor has told you to say.
At the end of the day, charitable people 'give' to charity.
Actions speak louder than words as they say.

Terry, thanks for the comment. Let me ask you this, do you think a big deal should have been made out of the Governor of New York's actions? Or (dare I say?) President Clinton? I know people believe that a politician's private life and public life should be kept separate. And I can kind of accept that. Personally, I believe what a person does with his own life says a lot about what he does with ours.

My provider didn't shut down! Does this mean I need to consider changing to another company that is greener and more ecologically friendly?

Using Search Engines to Find People for Free!

Ahh! A very specified article indeed. I have not found one of this quality since the newspapers of Benjamin Franklin. I'm very glad that I'm not the only one looking for a "beloved" or a friend. So to conclude, I was very content with this article.
Anonymous: (38 days ago.)

This article was actually rather helpful. I've found out that one does not have to look to far to find a beloved. My family and I are all very pleased. At one point, I was almost lost of all hope, until I stumbled upon this article. Thus, it has changed my life by freeing me of not having to live through days of undefiable lonesomness.

Laura:
An interesting and detailed article. I have found some people from my past thru both Google and Yahoo!. I've never found anyone thru MSN. But I must agree with many of the others who commented about not finding enough sights that do not require me to open my wallet. For me to find one of the most important people in my past, I had to pay. There was no other way. The listings in both Google and Yahoo! and probably MSN, as well, are for people who have a listing in the phonebook. A published number and address. If the person I'm looking for has an unlisted number, the only way I'm going to get information about that person is to pay. It would be fun to have one or more websites that are free and would give me the information I seek, but then, what good would the unlisted number be to the person who owns it?

Why Are We Killing Our Girls?
Leo Ponder from Tyler,Texas: (40 days 6 hours ago.)

I agree! I agree! Wonderful Article that sounds the horn of danger. They should be shut down, but alas we can no more close these people down,
since the computer and the websites are PUBLIC, than we can stop anyone from jumping in their car and visiting a business or home whenever they want. If we remember that then I think the only answer is to put old fashioned supervision on our kids. I think it is a dereliction of parents
in todays busy times that contribute. Plus peer pressure on the kids to
ignore the old fashioned morals. The prevalence of immorality in our country
today is insurmountable (Thats strong but true) but we ARE killing our kids.
Since I have three daughters , I can claim some experience with this crap. Thanks again very much, Laura.

Leo, absolutely! I know that a little bit of parenting would go a long way toward solving a lot of issues. As a mom of two and a former teacher, I can say with certainty that the kids who had loving, caring parents had by far a better chance to grow up well-adjusted and successful than the ones who didn't!

Why Are We Killing Our Girls?
susan thom from nj: (42 days 21 hours ago.)

hi laura,
i saw this on TV and the same thoughts crossed my mind. when is the size and shape of a person's body going to play back seat to their kindness, and spirituality and altruism of the person's personality? with websites like this, which will breed more, we have a tough road ahead.
thanks for a well written, interesting story,
best regards,
sue
Response from Laura Trahan (29,453) Laura Trahan : (30 days 20 hours ago.)
Thanks for the kind words, Sue. Unfortunately, I don't see an end in sight. All we can do is try to raise our daughters better than that.
Kids' Birthday Party Ideas

Great ideas - and I LOVE the cupcake idea - no more trying to get the icing just right on the homemade cakes - or expensive store bought ones!

Thanks so much for the comment! Exactly, since God knows I can never get that icing perfect!:)
Why Are We Killing Our Girls?
Kathy Somers Walsh: (44 days 8 hours ago.)

Oh my goodness...what next. How old are the girls on this website? I hope there 18 and over but I can only imagine a 10 year old would probably be on there as well. I heard of a little girl aged 8 that has bulima..now that is way to young to worry about her weight, i hope she didn't get this from her moms actions....sad
Response from Laura Trahan (29,453) Laura Trahan : (30 days 20 hours ago.)
Kathy, if only they were 18 and over. The site is purported to be aimed at ages 9-16. It's just pathetic and sickening!
Hannah Quinn from Australia: (44 days 22 hours ago.)

Crickey! That's terrible! The world is full of cretins who claim they are helping and teaching when they are really being destructive. The internet is a wonderful tool and means of communication, but there will always be abusers and as parents, grandparents and good citizens, we must be on the lookout all the time. I'm glad you became aware of it while your girl is still little and not when she was entrenched in the program. I'd start a letter and media campaign if I was you to raise awareness and help people ensure their young girls are not involved. I doubt it is possible to get it shut down. I'm a strong believer in only allowing children on the internet when it is being supervised, and not allowing net enabled computers into children's bedrooms.
Thanks for the alert, Laura.
Response from Laura Trahan (29,453) Laura Trahan : (44 days 21 hours ago.)
Great idea Hannah! I agree that parent supervision is essential because of people like this! I agree it probably is impossible to get it shut down-kind of disheartening! Thanks so much for commenting! -Laura
My daughter is Eve In The Flesh
Hannah Quinn from Australia: (44 days 22 hours ago.)

Laura,
I've had two boys and one girl. Two boys together are half the trouble of one girl! I expected it to be the other way around! Enjoy the rest of your journey with your little Hannah - it's worth it. My daughter is 33 in May and a very close and delightful friend. You eventually have to step back with your boys, but you never have to with your girls. Have you heard the old saying: A son is a son 'til he takes a wife; a daughter is a daughter all of her life? lol
Great read. It certainly brought back memories!
Response from Laura Trahan (29,453) Laura Trahan : (44 days 21 hours ago.)
Hannah-I love that name and that saying! :) I have a older boy as well and I look back and think this stage of his life was a breeze compared to her! I am glad I brought back some memories! Thanks so much for commenting!

This breaks my heart!! I will be praying about this, I must admit, I tend to think of the pressures that attack teens as my son is 17, this is terrible. And yet another example of why the world is in the mess that it is in. I am going to send this article to my friends who have young teens! Thanks for writing on a very important issue. My eyes are open! God bless and protect these little girls!
