The problem with using a tesla turbine for the compression of any gas
(whether intake air or exhaust) is that at high compression ratios, the air
at the edge of each disk is hotter than the air at the center, resulting in the
disk being hotter at the edge than the center. Because metals expand when
heated, the outer edge of each disk "wants" to be bigger than the part of the
disk inside it. This results in warping, and eventual mechanical failure.

Renewable Energy Manufactures/suppliers should use their own product to manufacture.
The manufacturers' of Solar Panels and other forms of renewable energy with related support products manufactures/suppliers - should have at least the decency to practice what they preach what they market to the public.
That would be the best marketing approach I can think off.
If they believe in the product they manufacture/sell, they should utilize it to its fullest potential.
It will give the manufacturer the actual experience of utilizing the product on a daily basis, view and experience any shortcoming or improvements that are needed, implement the improvements and capitalize on that revision to improve the product and its performance.
This will instill confidence in the public to purchase the product.

As with any new technology, PV will become more efficient, cheaper and cleaner to produce. In order for this to happen we (Governments / NGOs / Individuals) need to invest more time and money into making PV viable, e.g. through increased incentives, regulations, technical standards, R & D, manufacturing processes and generating consumer demand.
Just like the automobile industry, the manufacture used its own product.
Over the years the automobile industry and technology has evolved from the early 1900 to what it is today the year 2008.
I predict that in 10 years the automobile we know today will change drastically for the better, with new fuel technology and other modification that will improve its scales of economy and features.

Energy crises and economic disaster
Are we taking the necessary steps to prevent an energy crises and an economic disaster.
If oil and other fossil fuels have been the key ingredient in the creation of societies and lifestyle we enjoy today - what happens when they're gone?
One of the key principles of the Millennium Project is to facilitate the supply of energy - "Energy is central to sustainable development and poverty reduction efforts. It affects all aspects of development -- social, economic, and environmental -- including livelihoods, access to water, agricultural productivity, health, population levels, education, and gender-related issues. None of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) can be met without major improvement in the quality and quantity of energy services in developing countries." When it's the fundamental core of success and the creation and maintenance of prosperous and healthy societies have we done enough to secure future energy resources, supplies and technology? And more importantly to set in place the strategy to de-oil our lifestyles. Yes, there is plenty of talk about global warming and the need for clean renewable energy but little talk about how to remove our addiction to crude oil. Hooking up clean energy sources to the electricity grid is happening now but there is not much movement on the massive societal and infrastructure change needed to move away from the dwindling supply oil. The automotive fuels sector alone is a massive energy demand powered by oil and you may say the electric car will solve that one but even if a radical plan to swap the something like 1 billion cars in the world to electric vehicles, that would take many years if not decades, still leaves the burning question - what on earth is going to supply all that electricity when we are yet to even supply homes in the effort to eradicate poverty? And that's just one of the oil dependent sectors of our modern lifestyles. So are we heading for a civilization collapse? Already we can see the geo-political conflicts taking place around the world in the scurry for what's left of the oil supply, we can look at Chinas current fuel crisis and we can look at past events like the 1973 Oil Crisis to get an idea of the effects of minor supply 'blips'. Perhaps we need to look a little further into past civilizations and what they may warn us of.
Just because a civilization has been around for two or three hundred years, one cannot assume it will last forever. We have no special knowledge that tells us our civilization is more likely to endure than any other. The next crisis-which will likely be a shortfall in energy production-could be our doom. The collapse of modern civilization would be a catastrophic event, far worse than the popping of the technology bubble. Never mind the financial hardship that would befall almost everyone-the end of our civilization, and its complex division of labor, would result in mass starvation and a level of violence and chaos not seen since the end of the Roman Empire . If our civilization is to prevent such a future, we cannot allow the approaching energy crisis to catch us unprepared. We must discover the best strategy for preventing disaster, and implement it. We must learn the lessons of past civilizations-those that survived similar crises, and those that succumbed and try to discover what actions will help us survive.
With the future of our country at stake, would Americans really sit back and tolerate that kind of inaction? Of course not -- we'd be sharpening our pitchforks and demanding answers.
Americans aren't afraid of the truth. In fact, we crave the truth only slightly more than we crave a leader who will actually give it to us. But part of the problem with this issue is that numbers followed by 12 zeroes aren't very relatable to the average American.
Economic Impact of the Gas and Oil Shortages
The most frightening aspect about the approaching energy crisis is that so few Americans are aware of its imminence or the impact that it can have on their lives and upon our society. The wealth of this nation and of the entire developed world has been created largely because of those technologies made possible through our use of cheap fossil fuels. Those days are now ending. Because the demands for both oil and natural gas are inelastic, the increasing shortages will cause their prices to rise to unimaginable levels for an explanation of demand elasticity and realistic forecasts of future natural gas prices. And, as the prices of these hydrocarbons increase, the costs of everything that is made from them must also increase.
The rising fuel prices will cause a type of inflation that will be very different from previous inflations.

I think that the public, the government and corporate America should treat these energy crises as a danger to our way of life.
During World War II, the America we know unified in a common cause. Everyone rolled their sleeves to chip in and Americans produced an enormous amount of hardware for the war effort. "I see a solution within 36 months".
If we as a nation can really appreciate and understand the severity and enormity of the energy crises, the catastrophic impact on our economic stability and civilization,
we must unite and do whatever is necessary to produce other forms of energy and overcome this energy and economic crises "by putting all politics and egos aside and look for the good of our nation".

Water is the source of life - treasure it! R4.
Water is the source of all life on earth. It touches every area of our lives. Without it, we could not thrive - we could not even survive.

For the benefit of mankind, maintain the quality of life and preserve the peace and tranquility of world population. Water resources must be preserved - to sustain humanity. We must eliminate wasteful utilization of water, conserve our water sources and implement rigid conservation methods. We should utilize solar and or other source of renewable energy to operate desalinization projects from the oceans. Utilize renewable energy sources to purify and transport the water to its final destination. As world population increases the scarcity of water will become a cause for conflict, unless we take steps now to develop other sources of water for drinking, rainwater harvesting storm-water and gray-water utilization. Designing of landscaping that uses minimal amount of water.

To preserve the future generations sustainability, we should look into urban farming vertical farming. The term "urban farming" may conjure up a community garden where locals grow a few heads of lettuce. But some academics envision something quite different for the increasingly hungry world of the 21st century: a vertical farm that will do for agriculture what the skyscraper did for office space. Greenhouse giant: By stacking floors full of produce, a vertical farm could rake in $18 million a year.

Concentrated Solar Power , which requires no solar panels at all. It works by concentrating sunlight onto a small pipe using cheap parabolic reflectors. The pipe contains a liquid that's heated to very high temperatures by the sun and drives a steam boiler that rotates a turbine to generate electricity (much like nuclear power plants, but without the nuclear waste). It's cheap, low-tech, and far more affordable than solar power. Plus, it can be built in practically any desert, so it doesn't take up valuable land. As another bonus, when CSP operations are built near the ocean, they can desalinate ocean water as a side effect, providing fresh water for irrigation to grow food. This is the only renewable energy technology I know of that can produce cheap energy, fresh water and crop irrigation all at the same time. Plus, it has no emissions, no toxic chemicals, no nuclear waste and very little environmental impact..

The Tesla turbine does not produce as much power as a modern vane turbine. Especially with cast iron. The design is indeed usable, but not for compact or lightweight applications, and not for large scale applications. Modern vane turbines can reach abotu 60% efficiency. This means they convert about 60% of the heat energy of steam into electircity. The rest is waste heat. This, as far as I know, includes the use or heat exchangers, regenerators, and double cycle power plants. A tesla turbine maxes out at about 40% efficiency. So, for any steam that you generate, you will only produce 2/3 the power that you could possibly get from a vane turbine.
In addition, it is not the turbine that makes up most of the weight. It is the boiler that weighs the most. Even the smallest effective boilers are twice the size of an average motorcycle. And, then you have to carry a liquid which to turn into steam. That weighs more than the boiler. A 20 horsepower steam engine will require several gallons of water to run even for a short time. Unless you include a condenser to retain your water in a closed loop steam system, you will need to tank up on water frequently. Then you need fuel to heat the water. Again, you will need to carry gasoline or propane or wood to burn to convert heat to steam to convert steam to work to convert work to electricity to convert electricity to a transmission, which in turn will run your "25 pound" motorcycle. Using compressed air is more realistic. However the efficiencies are even fewer, as air can be compressed. Thus it takes more air at higher pressure to do the same amount of work. This is why no one uses steam in motive engines (except ships).
With more research you will find that even with modern materials, a tesla turbine falls apart at the temperatires and speeds that current vane turbines run at. Higher temperature equals higher efficiency. Turbine disks large enough to compete with the power requirements of a modern steam plant warp out of shape within a few hundred hours of use. If you were a steam plant operator, would you want to rebuild your turbine twice a month? A tesla turbine might be useable for low efficiency non-mobile uses. The main advantage of a tesla turbine is not efficiency. They are not efficient.
The main advantage is the simplicity of building a tesla trubine. Also, laminar flow (tesla) engine is a type of drag based turbine. The most efficient turbines do not use drag, they use lift. This is true for wind turbines, as well as closed loop steam turbines as well as motive gas turbines that you find in aircraft. Tesla turbines are cheap to manufacture though. SO if you have an infinite supply of energy (such as heat) where it doesnt matter what the efficinecy is, then you might be able to use it.
In summary, the tesla trubine never cut the mustard. This was proven when power plant operators attempted to use them back in the early 1900's.

MANDATORY RENEWABLE ENERGY – THE ENERGY EVOLUTION –R15

In order to insure energy and economic independence as well as better economic growth without being blackmailed by foreign countries, our country, the United States of America’s Utilization of Energy Sources must change.
"Energy drives our entire economy.” We must protect it. "Let's face it, without energy the whole economy and economic society we have set up would come to a halt. So you want to have control over such an important resource that you need for your society and your economy." The American way of life is not negotiable.
Our continued dependence on fossil fuels could and will lead to catastrophic consequences.
The federal, state and local government should implement a mandatory renewable energy installation program for residential and commercial property on new construction and remodeling projects, replacement of appliances, motors, HVAC with the use of energy efficient materials-products, mechanical systems, appliances, lighting, insulation, retrofits etc. The source of energy must be by renewable energy such as Solar-Photovoltaic, Geothermal, Wind, Biofuels, Ocean-Tidal, Hydrogen-Fuel Cell etc. This includes the utilizing of water from lakes, rivers and oceans to circulate in cooling towers to produce air conditioning and the utilization of proper landscaping to reduce energy consumption. (Sales tax on renewable energy products and energy efficiency should be reduced or eliminated)
The implementation of mandatory renewable energy could be done on a gradual scale over the next 10 years. At the end of the 10 year period all construction and energy use in the structures throughout the United States must be 100% powered by renewable energy. (This can be done by amending building code)
In addition, the governments must impose laws, rules and regulations whereby the utility companies must comply with a fair “NET METERING” (the buying of excess generation from the consumer at market price), including the promotion of research and production of “renewable energy technology” with various long term incentives and grants. The various foundations in existence should be used to contribute to this cause.
A mandatory time table should also be established for the automobile industry to gradually produce an automobile powered by renewable energy. The American automobile industry is surely capable of accomplishing this task. As an inducement to buy hybrid automobiles (sales tax should be reduced or eliminated on American manufactured automobiles).
This is a way to expedite our energy independence and economic growth. (This will also create a substantial amount of new jobs). It will take maximum effort and a relentless pursuit of the private, commercial and industrial government sectors’ commitment to renewable energy – energy generation (wind, solar, hydro, biofuels, geothermal, energy storage (fuel cells, advance batteries), energy infrastructure (management, transmission) and energy efficiency (lighting, sensors, automation, conservation) (rainwater harvesting, water conservation) (energy and natural resources conservation) in order to achieve our energy independence.

P.S. I have a very deep belief in America's capabilities. Within the next 10 years we can accomplish our energy independence, if we as a nation truly set our goals to accomplish this.
I happen to believe that we can do it. In another crisis--the one in 1942--President Franklin D. Roosevelt said this country would build 60,000 [50,000] military aircraft. By 1943, production in that program had reached 125,000 aircraft annually. They did it then. We can do it now.

The American people resilience and determination to retain the way of life is unconquerable and we as a nation will succeed in this endeavor of Energy Independence.
The Oil Companies should be required to invest a substantial percentage of their profit in renewable energy R&D and implementation. Those who do not will be panelized by the public at large by boy cutting their products.
Solar energy is the source of all energy on the earth (excepting volcanic geothermal). Wind, wave and fossil fuels all get their energy from the sun. Fossil fuels are only a battery which will eventually run out. The sooner we can exploit all forms of Solar energy (cost effectively or not against dubiously cheap FFs) the better off we will all be. If the battery runs out first, the survivors will all be living like in the 18th century again.
Every new home built should come with a solar package. A 1.5 kW per bedroom is a good rule of thumb. The formula 1.5 X's 5 hrs per day X's 30 days will produce about 225 kWh per bedroom monthly. This peak production period will offset 17 to 2
4 cents per kWh with a potential of $160 per month or about $60,000 over the 30-year mortgage period for a three-bedroom home. It is economically feasible at the current energy price and the interest portion of the loan is deductible. Why not?
Title 24 has been mandated forcing developers to build energy efficient homes. Their bull-headedness put them in that position and now they see that Title 24 works with little added cost. Solar should also be mandated and if the developer designs a home that solar is impossible to do then they should pay an equivalent mitigation fee allowing others to put solar on in place of their negligence. (Installation should be paid “performance based”).
Installation of renewable energy and its performance should be paid to the installer and manufacturer based on "performance based" (that means they are held accountable for the performance of the product - that includes the automobile industry). This will gain the trust and confidence of the end-user to proceed with such a project; it will also prove to the public that it is a viable avenue of energy conservation.
Installing a renewable energy system on your home or business increases the value of the property and provides a marketing advantage. It also decreases our trade deficit.
Nations of the world should unite and join together in a cohesive effort to develop and implement MANDATORY RENEWABLE ENERGY for the sake of humankind and future generations.
The head of the U.S. government's renewable energy lab said Monday (Feb. 5) that the federal government is doing "embarrassingly few things" to foster renewable energy, leaving leadership to the states at a time of opportunity to change the nation's energy future. "I see little happening at the federal level. Much more needs to happen." What's needed, he said, is a change of our national mind set. Instead of viewing the hurdles that still face renewable sources and setting national energy goals with those hurdles in mind, we should set ambitious national renewable energy goals and set about overcoming the hurdles to meet them. We have an opportunity, an opportunity we can take advantage of or an opportunity we can squander and let go,"
solar energy - the direct conversion of sunlight with solar cells, either into electricity or hydrogen, faces cost hurdles independent of their intrinsic efficiency. Ways must be found to lower production costs and design better conversion and storage systems.
Disenco Energy of the UK has announced it has reached important
milestones leading to full commercialization, such as the completion of
field trials for its home, micro combined heat and power plant (m-CHP).
The company expects to begin a product roll out in the second quarter of
2008.
Operating at over 90 percent efficiency, the m-CHP will be able to
provide 15 kilowatts of thermal energy (about 50,000 Btu’s) for heat and
hot water and generate 3 kilowatts of electricity. The m-CHP uses a
Stirling engine generator and would be a direct replacement for a home’s
boiler.
Running on piped-in natural gas the unit would create some independence
from the power grid, but still remain connected to the gas supply
network.
Whereas heat is supplied only when the generator is running (or
conversely electricity is generated only when heat is needed) a back-up
battery system and heavily insulated hot water storage tank seem
eventual options for more complete energy independence.
FEDERAL BUILDINGS WITH SOLAR ENERGY – Renewable Energy
All government buildings, Federal, State, County, City etc. should be mandated to be energy efficient and must use renewable energy on all new structures and structures that are been remodeled/upgraded.

Water - The Perfect Fuel

If one uses say a 100 watts to electrolysis water, and then burn the resulting hydogen and oxygen mixture, you will not create more than 100 watts of energy. Since a motor is usually less than 50% efficient, you will probably produce less than 50 watts electricity. I don't think your engine will not produce enough electricity to electrolyze the water it uses. This is basic thermodynamics.
