Ms Aitken, If you will re read the article you will see I was simply reporting events of that day. I also gave references to professional reporting. It was not my personal business to judge the worthiness of those who lived, or those who died as a result of the storm. I try not to harbor grudges against anyone, particularly after Katrina. I do not know if the criteria for assistance was that Rochelle or any of her siblings actually lived in the house at the time of the storm. I agree, it is too bad that the house is locked and no one is living in it. Perhaps you can motivate Tyra Banks, or WLOX to do a follow up investigation. REgards, and I hope you have a safe 2008 HSeason
One of Many Simple Solutions for the Dark Times

Suzi, Excellent article! Thank you for sharing and helping others. What a great way to give back in honor of your brother. You have written a very important message on the importance of waiting. Thank you. Barbara
Response from Suzi Gravenstuk (105) Suzi Gravenstuk : (237 days ago.)
Barbara, your response is precious. Most of us hear that something good can come from everything that happens. When I found Shane, I didn't believe it. How could anything good possibly come from this? Well, you just made me believe it is possible. I will likely never know, but I would like to believe that the message will work for someone at the right place and time.

Great article. Yes, many need help especially in these dark times. You are the fortunate one, how many don't make it? Aside from medically it speaks to society that it even exists.
Response from Suzi Gravenstuk (105) Suzi Gravenstuk : (237 days 1 hour ago.)
Robert Melaccio, Sr. , I agree that I am one of the fortunate ones. I am grateful.
I just hope that if anyone reading this article tends to have thoughts of ending it all, that they will be honest with someone. Get help. Set goals, make plans, and discipline themselves to count blessings at least once a day. Even when things are really bad, there are blessings in front of you, you just have to recognize them.
One other life saving technique--Arm yourself with life saving techniques. If the thought has occurred to you once, it may come again. Be ready for it. Don't let it surprise you. Have a Live Action plan ready. Distract yourself! Wait until you have help or until it passes. Get out. Be around people. Find a meeting of any kind...

Suzi, I am so sorry about your brother, but so grateful you have found your way out of "Lodebar". This is so insightful. If you can't make it one day, split it up into hours. YES! Manageable goals are the key. God bless you for sharing this experience!
Response from Suzi Gravenstuk (105) Suzi Gravenstuk : (237 days 16 hours ago.)
April, thanks for reaching through the cyber world. "Lodebar" is an apt description. As you likely determined from the tone, I am a 12 stepper among other things. I am on my 20th birthday -alcohol- I remember sitting in my car outside a bar, gripping the steering wheel until the mind battle was over. I don't want to break down to the ridiculous, but at that time it was the moment. Had I given in, the entire course of my life would have changed. I doubt that my two children would have been here, because I would not have stayed on course to save my marriage. Thank you for commenting.

Hey Sis,
Thought I'd share with you where my mind and heart has been. You know
that I have made a few trips back home in the last two years and spent time
at the Restaurant visiting with some of our old customers and employees, also meet some new customers that has discovered our Chili Rellenos and
was impressed that Mom still works everyday and that our food is made fresh
daily from our Pop's receipes. Any way as I was there observing instead of working it came to me that it would be a great gift to Mom if I could get our loyal and faithful customers and employees to share a favorite story of the
Restaurant, Mom or her family. I have been working on the history off and on
for the last year. I guess you could say we are diffently on the same page
and love and respect Mom and what she has given to Borger and her family.
You are the writer in the family I'll send you what I have when it is finished and any comments I have received from the people I have contacted.
Mom and Pop started the Village in 1966 and Mom celebrated her 40th year
in business last October.
Love Shelia

Suzi,
I don't understand this article. Is your gift of giving this home to a Katrina survivor the miracle of God or is it a marketing plan? Help me understand because there are a multitude of those who suffered from Katrina that still do not no where to call home. In my writing and research regarding Katrina and PTSD, I do not want to trivialize the impact of this horrific event.
Response from Suzi Gravenstuk (105) Suzi Gravenstuk : (1 year 132 days ago.)
James, I am pleased to make contact with you. Are you still in AZ? Do you plan to visit soon and perhaps help some of us experiencing PTSD?
"Trivialize the impact?" I live here James. Enough said.
This was not my gift, rather my reporting of a gift. Because the mentioned sponsors made it happen does not mean that it is any less a gift.
Miracle of God or Marketing Plan? I believe God can use marketing to create modern day Miracles. Perhaps in marketing others will also step up to the plate and realize that it isn't over. 1 family settled, many more to go.
Rochelle wanted it known that the memorial is in the back yard. She asked me to post pictures. I plugged Planetta homes without their knowledge because I believe they deserve recognition, and because they also experienced huge losses.
If we limit God, maybe the home isn't a miracle. I see God as using marketing in bringing people together to achieve the Miracles of today.
By the way, do you offer PTSD counseling by email?
Response from Suzi Gravenstuk (105) Suzi Gravenstuk : (1 year 132 days ago.)
Regarding PTSD, James--I am interested in any research I can find. Writing is one way that I personally deal with it. I suspect there are many people who appear to be carrying on with their lives that are silent sufferers.
Jennifer Aitken from Bay St Louis: (147 days 3 hours ago.)
Excuse me but let me enlighten you. No one has EVER lived in the house on Easy St and it is now May 2008. Why? Because it was all a SCAM. Rochelle never lived in that house before the storm. After she got the new house she tried to lock her siblings out of it and they started to tell on her, how she lied to Tyra Banks. The whole thing is tied up in court and no one lives there. In an area where all the housing got destroyed it sits brand new and LOCKED. It is ridiculous. By the way, the two people that died, they weren't saints by a long shot. They made the entire neighborhood suffer.
So next time you want to help people, do you homework instead of taking the person crying the loudest. If you think this isn't true - check it out.
