What a great article Jane. You certainly laid it out. I have just finished an article concerning this gracious lady and her family. I mentioned one blogger which referred to her 17 year old as a "floozy". We do have sickos in our society. I do hope he got some value someway from using such a sick phrase. This Palin family strikes me as being one of a very few families left who have "family values". Again, a wonderful article

Jane I agree with you many are taking the route you described. It is another symptom of our nation. However, please remember, there is no real help for people until they are in default. Once they miss a payment they can renegotiate their rate. That is the only change they get. Have you read my article on foreclosure? If not that should give you a factual idea of just what is happening not just what people hear or think. Let me know what you think? Now they can sell short to an investor, they can write off a percentage of the loan, but they can't seem to help people in distress who own a home they can never repay? Plus Jane they have now passed all the risk over to us, the taxpayers and yet we still want these politicians and we still believe them. I am so perplexed and bewildered, how? Jane, then again how about this one? They never and I do mean never or rarely if ever speak to usury. I defy anyone to tell me where these candidates speak to the usury on Credit Card debts, Obama, looked the other way. A fact they just don't care to address any of them. Yet, it is usury by any definition. Honor, I'm sorry, none to be found. Professors in Christ, really? Jane you write well and bring issues to the fore, yet these politicians need to be held accountable. I enjoy your work and thoughts, Robert
Comment by Robert Melaccio, Sr. (4,435) Robert Melaccio, Sr. (12 days ago.)

Jane, a really good article but hoping for these candidates and our politicians to step up and address the issues many average Americans, lower middle income and the poor see staring them right in the face every single say is well sadly to be naive. Our own silver spooned President says it best. His America has no problems. Yes one only needs to understand the goal, objective, agenda to understand why. If you listen, now I said listen, you will always hear very distinctly and even as Ted Kennedy spoke last night the reference to the "WORLD", their problems, their needs, their hardships and what America needs to do for the World. What of wehere in America being forced from our homes. No not because of coveting as many might express, no because of Greed, exploitation and all the rest. The truth before God almighty is right there. That is for those who can see and care to see. Good job but unfortunately, the word of this century only 50% of eligible voters will vote, the other 50% default. They just do not see any real difference and frankly they are right. Best wishes, Robert
Jane Bullard: (11 days 23 hours ago.)
Robert, I always value your comments. Keep on trying to wake people up and I'll keep on hoping! You are right--the problems here at home are at crisis for many people and need first attention. I don't agree with the numbers of people who have intentionally defaulted because their home value went down in the middle of this mess, which is what a mortgage broker told me has happened at her bank. They can pay their mortgages, but they don't want to anymore because their house value dropped and they don't want to see if it will rise in the next two years, even a little. Both the lack of regulation of home loans and almost unlimited credit without questions lack the basic of common sense and economic sense. The banks went crazy! Thanks for writing!~Jane

Jane, I vote based who I agree with on the most issues. I try not to be affected by emotion or judge any candidate by his or her show of emotion or lack thereof. And I certainly don't take into consideration who is the most "presidential" -- whatever that means. Also, I'm not going to let world events influence my decision or be frightened by the prospect of some theoretical 3 a.m. phone call.
BTW, does anyone really think it'll ever be over? As soon as one election ends, the next one begins. Unfortunately, that's the reality in today's political environment. It's like the NBA and NHL. As soon as one season is over, they start preparing for the next. There's never really any off-season.

Hi Jane,
I will definitely do my part to vote on Nov.4. I will also be extremely glad when the process is final. I understand that we need to make informed decisions and on what we believe will support our country and citizens. I am however tired of the rhetoric and slander of who is supposedly doing what. I would like to post a huge sign that reads...Would the candidates step up and be real. Please tell us the truth of what you really are capable of doing and how you propose to do so. Please stop riding the ticket and blow us smoke of what you think we want to hear. Now that I am done venting, I will just pray that God gives us the discernment and wisdom to make the right decision when Nov 4 comes. God bless you.

Contraceptive Help for Teen-agers: Why I Would Not Have Accepted It
Paris: (26 days 4 hours ago.)
Hello. First of all, I'm 16. Not giving kids contraceptives is fine, if parent's were better than they are. Unfortunately most of the people I know have been abused or neglected in some way. These people need to find acceptance and love somewhere, anywhere! And i they can't get a hold of condoms, well...too bad! I
m not sure whether schools should give handouts, but I am sure that there needs to be someplace we can get them. Besides, most people meet their "mates" at school, maybe we should provide protection in the same place?
Jane Bullard: (25 days 21 hours ago.)
Hi, Paris. Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I understand the questions, and the lack of people to trust, for many teenagers. I believe that if others their own age as well as teachers and other adults can show teens their worth, things could change. It is sad to see teens think so little of the possible future they might have and the dreams they refuse to have...due to being left alone or ignored. There are many adults like my friends and me who do care. We want to be here for teens, to tell them "you can make it to a better future if you will start now and do the hard work." Many of us had to do that, or our parents did, facing more hardships than we. So, we know it is possible. I thank you so much, again, for writing to me. All the best to you, and I have high hopes for your determination and future. You sound like a bright and thoughtful young person. Thanks again. ~ Jane

Because of Grassley's investigation, these 6 organizations have come under media scrutiny. Copeland is one that is fighting the hardest because he realizes how the wrong decision could affect all of us, not just churches. Grassley made some serious errors in his handling of this situation, and he needs to admit that and let it go. This has been going on for way too long.

Jane I respect your opinion and writing yet I must state in my opinion what you admire are personal characteristics rather then leadership? They are of little good when what you do fails. What can we admire in this man or any of them as to effective leadership that is good for this nation and its people. I separate none from this. Republican or Democrat the same brew. What must one say? What can one say that has not been said over and over and over in the pain and suffering of millions? This is all about their deeds, what they do or fail to do. If the deeds of those currently in power do not reflect what is in my opinion blatant sin then what does? How far have we fallen that usury, breaking of law, treaties that are against our nations interests, exploitation, dismantling of our indistry, the selling of our national assets, the loss of jobs, homes and host after host after host of abuse is made acceptable, condoned? Then we might ask ourselves just what does that say?
The man or any of them personally not the issue. How they look, not the issue. How well they speak, not the issue. Race or war hero, not the issue. Enough said, how sad it is all confused with leadership.
Comment by Jane Bullard (1,276) Jane Bullard (40 days 3 hours ago.)
Hi, Robert, to go to your question, how can we know what a leader will do or fail to do? That's my concern, too. Cuba, USSR, Italy,
Germany, other countries in S. America and Africa...where people
thought they were getting a good leader, by revolution or by vote, ended up under the boot of a dictator or a succession of them. There were economic needs or crises involved in each case. It's always something that leads to drastic action. I don't like whipped up or pretty talk but prefer talk backed up by long records that show good, not perfect, leadership. I look for believability/credibility and good decision-making abilities. It's hard for an ego-driven profession like politics to come up with people with such records. We need to keep and use our freedom to hold Executive and Legislative branches together accountable to hold the other in check. We loan a lot of power on election day. Thanks for commenting!

Jane Bullard: (40 days 3 hours ago.)
Hi, Sue, I'm not saying it's perfect. But I grew up with parents whose
parents would have lived in poverty were it not for supportive rural
communities, churches, and families. My parents knew they could work
hard, understanding what their parents had faced and why it was
especially difficult in their parents' time - and one had raised five
children alone, working in a hat shop. I'm coming from a perspective
where I never had a car until I was 22, and it was my husband's. We
shared it. Today's a different time, yet I think young people,
including some in our family not finding summer jobs, need to know they
will make a way if they keep trying and we'll not turn our backs either.
Thanks for writing and commenting with your views. I appreciate the dialog! I'm having trouble staying logged in. Don't know the problem, but will leave for now. ~Jane

Bob, I agree with you. We need to have reasonable and true arguments and speak up. If we have only a few strong, true, and provable things to say about the person of our choice and keep repeating those true facts, then maybe, maybe some stone walls will crack and break. Both sides use ad phrases. We need to do more than parrot those. I'm looking for what helps this country's strength at the core. I'm looking for what tells young people not to hang their heads; not to believe they have no future. The issues change, come and go. The basic principles we need to guard never change. Next, for me, is experience. Then, character. I find few candidates of the past with whom I agreed on all of the main issues that are dear to me. We need to present arguments for our choice person that can bear up and also that relate to this country's democratic principles, in my view. That's my two-cents worth.
Thanks for the comments!

You are so right. The hatred by our own citizens for the USA is appalling. But what is even worse - traitorous - is American citizens going to other countries and demeaning our President and our country. I think they should be charged with treason in spite of "free speech". It just infuriates me! VERY good article, Jane!
Jane Bullard: (42 days 18 hours ago.)
Thanks, April. I used to stay quiet on these things, but after a while I could not help encouraging people to think about these things...one more squeak in the wheel, I now am. If we would not do talk about our families outside the family - when we disagree - I I don't think we should do it to our fellow-citizens. We disagree with each other, but that does not require harsh criticisms and ridicule. There's enough tearing-down going on in this world. Thanks for commenting! Have a good rest-of-weekend! ~Jane

I sometimes wonder if any significant number of interested, wise, and responsible adults is on the job with their teens, as my mom was, and in-the-know as my dad was. I want to keep pushing back against any ridicule of all that is good for teens and anything that underestimates them and their potential. Those things are timeless.
Beyond the home, I am convinced there is a "social agenda" out there, and it is not pretty and it undervalues teens. Sorry to ramble... Thanks again! God bless you, too!

Senator Grassley Reportedly Miffs Iowa's Political Religious Wing: GOP Payback at Convention?
Comment by Michelle Mackin (7,846) Michelle Mackin (47 days 6 hours ago.)

Very good article. It is not scriptural and yes if I were in Iowa, I would have to make some phone calls or hang my head if not. I wonder if the non-religious will ever regard christians as not being crazy or just people. I know, "we don't live in a perfect world"...Yet. Wait until we get to heaven. : )

I totally subscribe to this convincing argument. Religious political activism is out-of-hand. The non-religious regard us as a bunch of money-grubbing nuts. It's good to be reminded that not all thinking Christians agree with this diversion. And even more important, it's not scriptural.

Truth in American History Education for the Young: Just the Facts

This is a time of fiercely battling ideologies, as other times have been when the American people have reached a new, criticalphase. They rose to the challenge in part due to writers and others who put forth convincing arguments for the seriousness of the situation. Always glad to see your comments.---Jane

Ok, agree, agree, agree but and that but is huge this is all about Globalism, markets and not America. Should we, no doubt will we, not. It is as simple as that. Our kids are taught more about everyone else then they are about our own nation. Even other nations holidays, customs and yes languages. Sad, but true. Enough said because there really isn't much more to say. Unless Americans change there just will not be change. Good article.
Is Voting Free? Some Voters Have Choices and Others Have None
Comment by Jane Bullard (1,276) Jane Bullard (51 days 22 hours ago.)
Robert, I was struck by your comment about America having lost its zeal for voting. If we do not feel deeply about the right to vote, then we are either ignorant of facts or horribly careless. Sadly, there is much ignorance of the facts due to the decline of information about what voting means. Your reference to proxy voters struck me, too. This is a trend that needs to stop. If everyone of this view about how important each individual's vote is does not vote every voting season, does not challenge others to vote, and does not speak up about the importance of voting...the outcome will affect everyone negatively eventually. What that negative will be, how powerful or intense, how threatening, is not known. Whatever it is, it will be significant. Thanks for your comments, and best wishes to you in return, Jane
robert melaccio sr: (53 days 1 hour ago.)

Voting, interesting, let me see one might think if there is a choice, a real difference one would be encouraged? The sad fact is where is the choice? Only those who don't know really think there is a choice. Now I agree America has lost it's zeal for voting and that is why this Republic is in my opinion now hurting bad. We let the proxy voters do it all. However, there is a real choice I see not many taking this election day. What you ask? Vote every single republican or democrat out. Will it happen, no. Hey pass me another burger and water. I can no loger afford the dressings or cheese or that foreign beer. How sad. Best wishes, Robert.

Great article, Jane. Definitely some food for thought. It seems that in our 'Free' world of free thinking; we are quick to switch from one way of thinking to another---whichever way suits us best at any given time. We voted our President into office; but let him do one thing we don't necessarily agree with and yes, it's "throw him out!"; but if he does something exceptional that improves, say our economic situation, and it's "I knew I made the right vote!" And we will see it again and again and again.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Robert, I think we are on the same line of perspective on this--that our personal beliefs and hopes do influence how we see people, events, and ideas. I also tend to hope that I will gain balance of understanding, taking as much cue from true facts rather than sound-bites, slogans, or third-hand reporting or commentary. It's a continual challenge, isn't it? Thank you for reading and commenting on this article!
Comment by Robert Melaccio, Sr. (4,435) Robert Melaccio, Sr. (55 days 5 hours ago.)

Jane an article worth contemplating. I have written for years to why, the oil, the Foreclosures, the Credit Card usury, "Immigration" that isn't immigration, lost jobs, the war, etc. Close to 800 articles on this site and otehrs over three years. It all boils down to ethics, morality, beliefs, not what we profess but what we do or fail to do. The article is correct on many points all of which should have never been if we have people of honor, integrity, beliefs, moral character and yes Love of neighbor. That is the essence of all our woes. Simple, not so. You see the world has many more professors then actual doers. More easter Bunnies then solid types. best wishes.

Oh Jane, what brilliance and patriotism! This was a thoroughly excellent read! At one point, I laughed out loud because just the other day, I told my roommate: "I was supposed to remember to tell you something I finally understood but have now forgotten and can't remember." Yes indeed, I have those moments! I liked so many things you shared, " I do not get my way all the time, yet I am free, in a free country, to try for it." Thank you for representing some truths about why I am proud to be an American. On a side note, a dear friend is a physican in Berlingen in the canton of Thurgau. I love visiting the area. Do you know it? I fly into Zurich.

Avis, how neat! And thanks for your kind words and I'm so glad you enjoyed reading ! We share a lot, including that we have friends in Switzerland. I have been in or through Berlingen, but can't remember when or why (smile - you'll connect with my memory blitz, I think). I have often flown in and out of Zurich when going to other parts of the world. I hope you can visit your friend before long-though the dollar is not helping such adventures these days. I deeply appreciate what you wrote! We're in for quite an election-season ride, I think, and it is never dull. Jane
Your Book Proposal: Seven Important Questions You Need to Know How to Answer
Comment by James P Krehbiel (1,382) James P Krehbiel (79 days 19 hours ago.)

Jane, Excellent suggestions. I have just finished an edited manuscript regarding the impact of childhood trauma resulting from inadequate parenting on adult behavior. I am in the pre-marketing phase where I am gathering respected authors in my field to review it. Then I will look for an agent or publisher. I believe that I followed your principles in my proposal. I shall see. Thank you so much.
Jane Bullard: (79 days 8 hours ago.)
James, your manuscript topic is so important. I would be interested to know how the process goes. I think your gathering of respected authors, in peer review, is an excellent idea. I urge authors to do that and may quote you if you don't mind. I put my manuscripts through peer review too. Thanks again, and so honored to have a new fan.
Tim Russert of a Great Heart
Jane: (81 days 21 hours ago.)
Jean, I hope that this observation will be true in this instance: when influential people leave the scene it often happens that those closest to them, who relied upon them, remember with unusual clarity the questions they heard that person ask them and others in a process. This can be a kind of legacy for tham to emulate and use. I hope this may happen with his team and beyond-although we know he was truly irreplaceable. Thank you for your comments. Jane
Comment by Jean Horst (1,032) Jean Horst (81 days 23 hours ago.)

Jane, I think Mr. Russert's untimely passing could very well impact the outcome of the election. He had such a way of asking the tough questions and getting answers that we needed to hear. I feel that there are things I'll need to know when making the decision about who to vote for that I won't know now. I'll very much miss the clarity he brought to issues.
