A Fathers Advice

This is just a thought that struck me today. In a few days it is the 2nd years anniversary of my father in law. I had a great relationship with this man, we always laughed. So my mind turns to make me think of my relationship with my own dad.

You seem to go through the stages, small kid, totally dependent. Teenager , yikes. This one is a whole book. Then as an adult, the relationship either grows or dies. I am lucky, my da and I get on better than ever. I think maybe he has grown up.

I remember a couple of words of wisdom that he has imparted, this from a man who has achieved more, lived more and laughed more, than anyone I know. I know a lot of wealthy people, but none more than him.He is comfortable in money terms, but because he sings and enjoys the craic, he has the life of a king.

Anyway the words to share.

When I was 16 I wanted a motorbike. I was now a working man, making a wage. I wanted my independence. After gently telling me that the bike would be in three disposable bags if I ever brought one home. He said he would insure me in his and my mothers car. But Dad, I said thats a year away. He said with a smile, when you are young, time moves slowly, when you get married, it goes quickly. But when you have kids, it vanishes. He persuaded me and I must say that having a car, did not do any damage at two in the morning, when the lovely young ladies required a lift home. Oh by the way my son is now sixteen and he wants a motorbike, where did the time go? Anyone got some disposal bags?

He is now 73 and looks 60, so the women he dates say anyway. My parents are split up. He has seen a lot in his life. But now every weekend after working five days a week, he walks up hills for 6-8 hours on Sundays. He complained this week that he is a bit tired, so we discussed his weekend, maybe it had something to do with the fact that he was singing and drinking until 5 am on Saturday morning.

He continues to live by his moto,' Life is like a bag full of air, knock hell out of it as long as it lasts'.

Social Media, Where Have The Manners Gone?.

Posted Friday, June 19, 2009 (156 days 12 hours ago.) Viewed 33 times.

Well if you are not on it, you are behind. They are at least 30 social media sites that I am aware of. Some for personal, some for business and some, that only God and their creator's understand.

I love networking, always have. I believe that the best way to do business is by relationship building. Its also extremely interesting finding out how other people think, what makes them get up in the morning and how they make money. So I have been in numerous networking groups and associations and have attended meetings in both Ireland and the USA. So what's this got to do with social media. Well its the same thing, just on a computer. Oh yeah and with a hell of a lot more people.

The difference is on a computer you can BS more, which drives me nuts. Today I had some girl become my 'friend', she asked me to help her. No problem what can I do, can you vote for me on a model site. Sure why not, oh I will give you a surprise if you do, really, there's no need. I am happy to help. Oh you need a credit card, just to verify your age. ALARM BELLS NOW GOING RING RING RING. Really is that right, by the way what's the surprise?. I will send you pictures of my private parts, (not quite the words used, one was in reference to a feline creature). So you will get them all, to be fair that's the most outlandish I have had to date.

The standard seems to be 'Hi, Want me to teach you how to make money?. Want to know how to make money on Twitter?. Want me to show you how I have made millions and zillons?. Click this link, so you click the link and guess what, a lot of the time its the same 'secret' that you got from 100 others. Don't get me wrong, God loves a trier, but say hello first. But there should be some common sense used. Look you don't get introduced to some one and say straight away, want to make money. In the name of god, even dodgee, dvd sales guys on the streets say Hi first.http://anthonymccarthy.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif

Tell me what you are about. Your experiences, no matter how small. Look we all start somewhere .Also remember that people are letting you into their lives, down to what some of them had to eat. So some basic good manners should apply.

So my thoughts are,

1/ Introduce yourself and tell people what you are doing.

2/ engage in some conversation.

3/ Ask the other person what are they into and can you help in any way (unless its a modelling competition)

4/ Build a relationship by helping them.

5/ Remember BNI's Givers gain. Help them and they will want to help you.

6/ Wait for them to buy.

Anyway here in Ireland, that's how we like to network. It's normally done over a pint, now if I can figure how to serve a pint of Guinness on line..............

Which Guru To Follow?

Posted Sunday, June 14, 2009 (161 days 20 hours ago.) Viewed 13 times.

To learn anything, find an expert or a guru to follow. Take their system, make it your own and then improve on it. This is what 15 years of mixed martial arts has thought me. Find the best that's why I chose my friend Matt Bacak. I do not call Matt my friend lightly, as a matter of fact after twenty five odd years in business, I use the word friend cautiously.

I have had thousands of friends, always when they are looking to buy. That's cool. Its part of relationship building, but to be honest these are business associations. Yes you can have fun and they are great people, but generally the relationship is one sided. In business that's the way it should be. I first meet Matt in Dublin, where he was speaking at thinkandgetrichbootcamp. I went due to the fact that I was interested in changing the way I have done business and I have a firm belief that the Internet is the way of doing business in the future. Matt and I were introduced, as he had family, some generations back, from Cork.

http://anthonymccarthy.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gifI did not sign up to any courses that weekend. I was sceptical, but I liked Matt, from the off, he was not smooth and polished, he got really dressed up for his presentation, he was in a pair of shorts and a tee shirt and it was snowing outside. So what you saw is exactly what you got. His talk opened my eyes to the possibilities of business on line. After researching him on line, I signed up for his course. He visited Cork, to see the blarney stone and I spent two days with Matt and his wife. You want to get to know someone spend a couple of days with them. He is the real deal, what you see is what you get. I really like that, because its how I am. His two day course, well, the hamster in my head, broke the wheel and it took me 3 days after before I could have a rational conversation. It was like going to the best magic show on earth, then being brought backstage and shown how it was done. Mind blowing!

The first product I have chosen to launch is by Matt and Jo Hon Mok. Well yes its a bit dated, but its got the bones of where to start. If you follow the system outlined here you can get your first steps on line and make some money. No it does not cover everything, if it did, it would be bigger than the bible. But you have a fantastic foundation, delivered in an easy way to understand. You listen to the audio and then you have a pdf transcript. So you can review your information.

It starts with the fundamentals which is, how to build your list. This I understand to my core. The list has being king, since the mail man was invented (who was the first mail man, anyone know?). Direct mail marketing, I was introduced to this by Murray Raphel, twenty years ago. The difference now is just the delivery system. I have just, in jest, the system is complicated and like everything on line can be done a thousand different ways. So you need to pick one, master it and then move on.

Twitter The FREE Way To Increase Your Followers

Posted Monday, June 08, 2009 (167 days 12 hours ago.) Viewed 68 times.

Twitter is an interesting idea. Its basically a computerized global text, just like you do on the phone. Its not as restrictive as face book (limit to 5000 people), however it also is not as personal, but its a great way to keep up, by tweeting. That's what the message is called. You can also Dm, direct message.

You basically have followers and Following. Followers are people that follow you, or that see your messages. Following are people you follow, or receive messages from them.

So its a form of networking, a lot of time with people you don't know. As with any form, of networking, I don't recommend selling straight off the bat. On facebook and twitter, alot of people hit you between the eyes. Like all forms of networking, a relationship needs to be formed. So a good model I have learnt is 30% social, 60% information and 10% promoting sales.

But first you need to build your list. So here are a number of great programs that are available free. That will help you build your list.

tweetdeck: a great way to keep an overview of your tweets, direct messages etc are all displayed and you can reply here.

ping.fm This allows you broadcast your tweets, across multiple networks, incl. myspace, facebook and of course twitter. So one entry goes a long way

tweetspinner, is on of my favourites. You can track keywords and follow people that tweet about these keywords. Also you can set ratios and follow people back quickly.

Twubble is another way to follow friends of friends. Its time consuming but good

These have allowed my in 3 weeks increase my followers by 3000. Not bad.

There is also a theory that Twitter have a magic number of 2000, you need to keep your followers and following balance within 7%. I don't know if this is true, but look after it, just in case. If you have more followers than you are following, twitter loves you.

These are the tools I have used to go from 40 follows to 5000+ in five weeks. I know people tell you that they are other ways, this is how I actually did it. You can check me out at http://twitter.com/tonymccarthyIRL

happy tweeting
