Scrapbooking For Your Kids

Posted Monday, February 04, 2008 (1 year 294 days ago.) Viewed 67 times.

Memories are what keeps a person or a moment alive.

Long after a loved one has passed over we remind our self of how special they were to us through mental flashbacks or photos or videos etc.

The same can be said for occasions. How many times have you pulled out the school photos or wedding photos to reminisce about a favorite time or occasion?

It is for this reason that scapbooking for your baby's future is such a fantastic idea, especially for all you expectant Mom's out there now. Imagine your child's scrapbook starting with pictures and comments from the day the doctor gave you and your partner the news you were expecting.

How about photos of your first and subsequent ultra scan. Imagine junior's joy in seeing him or herself inside Mommy's tummy or a picture of Mommy standing side on accentuating her big tummy. We are talking about the complete journey here.

You could break the scrapbook up into chapters and have a pre-birth chapter. A chapter for year's 0-1yo and so on.

Some important moments to capture for the scrapbook could be:

1. Get a handprint at various stages of the child's life.

2. Include some small gifts you received from the baby shower etc.

3. Baby's first haircut. A snip of hair adds reality to the scrapbook.

4. Ensure you get photos of the baby with as many relatives as possible. There will probably come a time one or more shall pass over before your child has really got to know them so by including these, that persons memory is just a glance away for your child.

5. Include your pets. It is a fact that we all remember our pets as kids and having a photo of the child and their pet of the time confirms their relationship with the animal.

6. Include photos of your house. if you move a few times during childhood, they will have the photos to remember joyous times by.

7. List their xmas presents they receive each year. They will love it.

8. Write the words to that special song that Daddy sings to them at night. Chances are Dad and Junior will be still singing it well into the child's development because it signifies special times and the bond they share.

9. A brief Family Tree. If possible, include 4 generations from each side and try to be as specific as possible.

This list can be as long or as short as you want it to be. Be imaginative. Look around your house and objects or moments will flash into your mind. Think of what, as a kid, you would have liked to have kept as a memento. Limitless ideas come to those that explore.

Remember, this is a lifelong keepsake for your child.

Long term, you want them to be sitting down going through the scrapbook with their grandchildren.

Paling Fence

Posted Monday, January 07, 2008 (1 year 322 days ago.) Viewed 371 times.

Perhaps the most popular style and one of the simplest to build is the paling fence. Many backyards are littered with the standard paling fence due to the fact they won't stretch your budget. Paling fences provide an extremely economical fence for many applications.

They can help control sun, shade, breezes and the ever encroaching traffic noises. They not only define the property line and provide the usual street and neighbour privacy, Paling fences and screens can also be employed as a landscaping aid in many ways. They are also ideal for shelter.

There are actually different types of paling fences and construction methods. Your local builder is best at advising you on that aspect. They are often produced from sawmill offcuts and so avoid wastage, but demand for hardwood palings has dropped as radiata pine and untreated cypress pine have increased their market shares

[HINT]
Why not add extra appeal by adding trellis to the top of your paling fence.

Dressing Up Your Paling Fence

Capping, lattice and feature posts can be fitted to turn a simple paling fence into a decorative feature.
As a decorative option to the standard  fence, also available is the ‘beaded' paling fence in which a 30mm bead is fixed between the vertical boards offering an attractive pattern down the line of the fence.

If you are on a budget, then a basic  paling fence painted or left in its natural state and softened with shrubs or climbers is a good solution but keep in mind that a regular coat of paint or stain will increase the durability of the Paling fence.
If using a Paling fence for sound insulation, palings can be attached on both sides of the rails.Obviously consent from your neighbour is paramount.

Posts

Timber posts are more decorative than concrete but keep in mind that concrete will never rot like timber fences and Paling panels can be easily replaced once you have the concrete framework for your fence.

Rails

It is common to use three rails on the fences.  Of course if the fence is very low then just a top and bottom rail are required.Rails are usually attached to the posts in one of two ways, either fixed to the face of the posts or butted between the posts. To add extra strength to the fence cut the rail lengths so they span three posts and stagger the joins.

How Do I Build a Campfire

Posted Friday, February 16, 2007 (2 years 282 days ago.) Viewed 39 times.

When you're on the trail or at the campsite, a fire can mean the difference between cooked food and going hungry, the difference between keeping warm and freezing, the difference between a successful and an unsuccessful hike. Today, we'll quickly go through the steps to building a fire, one of the most useful survival skills for any form of outdoor adventure travel.

Parts of a Fire

A fire is composed of three parts: a fire pit, kindling, and firewood. A fire pit is a simple ring of stones or wood, designed to moderate the amount of wind that reaches the fire and to prevent the fire from spreading to the surrounding area. Kindling is any wood or paper small enough to catch fire easily, which starts the fire and allows the rest of the wood to heat up. That wood--the firewood--is what keeps the fire going for a long time without burning out.

Building a Fire

Once you have your fire pit ready, place a small heap of kindling in the center. Make sure that you can easily reach it with matches, a butane firestarter, or a cigarette lighter if you absolutely don't have anything else. Start stacking the firewood on top of the kindling, making sure that it's close enough to the kindling to catch fire, but not so close that it prevents wind from reaching the center of the fire. Stack your firewood in a pyramid pattern for best results. Once you've built your fire, light it and enjoy!

A Note on Safety

Never leave a fire unattended, and make sure that you stir the ashes of your fire once it's out in order to prevent it from flaring up again. Make sure that you know the fire safety regulations of your trail or campsite and keep to them in order to prevent site damage or forest fires.
