Five Easy Aromatherapy Recipes for Using Essential Oils Every Day

Posted Friday, October 23, 2009 (33 days 17 hours ago.) Viewed 132 times.

Using essential oils every day can make your life better. It can make you calmer, happier, healthier... and smelling great! With just 5 or 6 key essential oils and some easy aromatherapy recipes, you can improve your hair, your skin and your stress levels. Use these aromatherapy home recipes to boost your morning energy, clear the air in the office or sickroom, soften your skin, and relax at the end of a long day.

Essential oils you'll need: Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Rosewood and Patchouli. Optional: Rosemary

Easy Aromatherapy Recipe #1: Minty Morning Shampoo

Buy a good unscented shampoo. For each 8 ounces (250ml) shampoo, add 15 drops peppermint, 10 drops lavender and 5 drops lemon essential oil. Optional: Replace 2 drops of the lemon with 2 drops rosemary essential oil. Shake well.

This essential oil recipe balances your scalp's oil production, promotes hair growth and helps prevent (or get rid of) dandruff. Plus its bright, energizing aroma starts your day with a smile.

Handy Hint: To really rev up your morning, also use this recipe to scent a plain shower gel or body wash.

Easy Aromatherapy Recipe #2: Soothing Skin Lotion

Buy a good unscented lotion. For each 8 ounces (250ml) lotion, add 20 drops lavender and 5 drops rosewood OR patchouli (patchouli is less floral - good for guys.) Lavender, rosewood and patchouli are all excellent skin healers. They help rejuvenate your skin by stimulating the formation of new skin cells, they balance oil production, and they help with skin conditions such as acne or eczema.

Deeply soothing to the nervous system, this easy aromatherapy recipe also relaxes the muscles and promotes feelings of calm and well-being.

Handy Hint: Use as a hand lotion whenever you wash your hands. Not only will it give your spirits a lift, but it will also kill any lingering germs... AND soften your skin. A winner!

Easy Aromatherapy Recipe #3: Peppermint Pick-me-up Facial Mist (Or Room Spray or Body Mist)

This is a great aromatherapy home recipe for that mid-afternoon slump. Before your reach for coffee or a chocolate bar, reach for your spray bottle!

To make your facial mist, boil enough water to fill your bottle. Let the water cool, then pour it into the bottle. For each 8 ounces (250ml) water, add 15 drops peppermint and 5 drops lemon. Optional: Replace 3 drops of the peppermint with 3 drops of rosemary. Shake well before each use.

Make sure the nozzle gives a very fine mist. Dark glass or PET plastic bottles are best for essential oils recipes because the oils eat through other types of plastic.

Peppermint, lemon and rosemary boost energy, improve mental alertness and lift mood. They also relieve pain; try using this spray to ease a headache.

Use this essential oil recipe during a workout to increase your strength and energy. Or use as a room spray to freshen up sickrooms and nursing homes.

Caution for public places: People are becoming more sensitive to scents - even natural ones - so please make sure your spray doesn't cause any asthma attacks or other health issues.

Easy Aromatherapy Recipe #4: Soothing Sleep-time Massage or Bath Oil

For massage oil: Pour 4 tablespoons (60ml) carrier oil into a glass bottle. Add 10 drops lavender, 3 drops rosewood and 2 drops patchouli. Put the cap on and shake until mixed.

For bath oil: Pour 1 tablespoon (15ml) carrier oil into a glass jar. Add 10 drops lavender, 3 drops rosewood and 2 drops patchouli. Put the cap on and shake until mixed.

This easy aromatherapy recipe also makes a fabulous rejuvenating facial serum. Use the massage oil recipe above; simply massage gently into your face (avoiding your eyes) using light, upward strokes. Good for all skin types, especially if you tailor your carrier oils to your skin type.

Easy Aromatherapy Recipe #5: Clean Green All Purpose Disinfectant Spray

Fill a large spray bottle about 3/4 full of boiled and cooled water. Fill to the top with white vinegar. For each 8 ounces (250ml) of liquid, add 15 drops lavender and 15 drops lemon essential oil. Shake well before each use.

Use on virtually any surface: kitchen counters, bathroom fixtures, windows - even your car, office and patio... you name, it can clean it!

These 5 simple essential oils recipes make it easy to incorporate aromatherapy into your everyday life. Before long, you'll see a difference. More energy, less stress... feeling good about taking care of yourself... improved health...

Small steps every day, including 'aromatherapy breaks', will help you have the healthy, happy life you deserve. Go for it!

Six Secrets to Mixing Your Own Aromatherapy Oils

Posted Sunday, October 11, 2009 (45 days 14 hours ago.) Viewed 24 times.

Mixing your own aromatherapy oils is like going on a sensory adventure. You sniff out fabulous new scents, discovering zippy blends that step up your energy and pep up your mood. Or deeply relaxing blends that draw you down into a sense of calm and comfort. The landscape of our energy and well-being is just as interesting as the landscape of our planet - just... a lot smaller.

There are so many aromatherapy blends, recipes and essential oils available that it can be easy to get overwhelmed by all the choices. Not to worry - with these six secrets for mixing your own aromatherapy oils, you can confidently make your own essential oil blends for any mood or moment.

Secret #1: Get Into Groups

Here's a helpful starting point for mixing your own aromatherapy oils. Essential oil scents fall into five general groups:

  • Floral - such as lavender, geranium, jasmine and rose
  • Citrus - such as lemon, grapefruit, orange and bergamot
  • Spicy - such as cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and pepper
  • Woody - such as cedarwood, rosewood, patchouli and sandalwood
  • Green (or Herbaceous) - such as peppermint, chamomile, eucalyptus and rosemary

Knowing your basic groups can help guide you in your blending efforts.

Citrus oils generally go well with spicy oils. Citrus and floral also often work well together. Woody and floral is usually a good combination, and green and citrus are good too.

If you're not sure about a blend, take the caps off the bottles, hold them together in a tight group and waft the combination under your nose.

Secret #2: Start Small

Start by buying one or two essential oils from each group. For instance, you could begin with lavender, bergamot, cinnamon, rosewood and peppermint. Then try adding rose geranium (smells more flowery than regular geranium,) lemon, cedarwood, patchouli and eucalyptus.

Pick more essential oils from the groups with the scents you prefer. Grow your collection slowly, adding essential oils as you come across new aromatherapy recipes you want to try.

Handy Hint: Make small batches when you're just starting out. Once you know what works, you can go bigger.

Secret #3: Stick With Simple

Mixing your own aromatherapy oils can be as simple as sprinkling lavender and lemon on a dusting cloth. Or adding a few drops of geranium and bergamot to a warm bath at night. It doesn't have to be rocket science.

Try these tricks for adding aromatherapy blends to your everyday life:

  • Add 5 to 10 drops each lemon and lavender to your unscented laundry detergent for sweet-smelling clothes. (Using fabric softener or dryer sheets will cover up the aroma - replace the fabric softener with white vinegar and hang your laundry outside to dry.)
  • Make your own essential oil bath or body blend by combining three drops of your three favorite essential oils in two tablespoons of oil. (Plain vegetable oil will work, but grapeseed, sweet almond and sesame are nicer.) Use the blend as a body oil, bath oil or massage oil.
  • Create a refreshing room spray: Boil some water and let it cool. Pour it into a spray bottle and add 5 drops each lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus. Coincidentally, this aromatherapy recipe is also a disinfectant. Perfect for sickrooms!

Secret #4: The Rule of Three

This one is really easy: When mixing your own aromatherapy oils, don't use more than three essential oils in one blend.

Yes, it's true that lots of recipes, especially commercial blends, use many scents in one product, but a simple fact is that three essential oils together work just right. Your nose can still smell all three, but at the same time they create a beautiful harmony.

Secret #5: Learn a Little - Be Sensible About Safety

Each essential oil has its own particular properties, not only in terms of scent, but also in terms of therapeutic effect and safety considerations. It's good to learn at least the basic safety information.

Two important points: Do not drink essential oils! Only apply externally, and dilute for use on the skin.

Some essential oils are skin irritants (cinnamon and thyme, for example.) Most of the citrus oils are photo-toxic, which means you can get sunburned if you're exposed to sunlight after applying them to your skin.

And did you know that too much lavender can be stimulating rather than relaxing? Or that sandalwood, patchouli and frankincense are among a whole list of oils that are exceptionally healing to the skin?

There's a whole world of interesting essential oil facts out there, and part of the fun of mixing your own aromatherapy oils is learning what they're good for. Take the time to enjoy the research!

Secret #6: Follow Your Nose!

In the end, it boils down to you. What do you like? What does your nose tell you is a good combination?

Your mood, your hormones, even the time of year can affect how you feel about a certain aromatherapy blend on any given day. Trust yourself! If you've learned some basic safety and therapeutic guidelines, you can't go too far wrong.

That's what makes the world of mixing your own aromatherapy oils so exciting - every day you can try something new, and it will always be good for you. Because every oil is not only part of our personal landscape, but also part of earth's gift to us.
