I remember my father being so upset with the price of oil being so high and complaining how he could not afford to pay for the heating oil and fuel for the family car. I look back and see that my father worried about things that we, as a nation still worry about today. I recall how Dad griped about how much tax was being taken from his paycheck and how the cost of everything was outrageous. To this day I remember my father commenting during the opening scene of the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Most may remember that scene during the opening credits where Mary Tyler Moore looked at meat in the supermarket and tossed it back in disgust when she saw the price. Dad would always say "Ain't that the truth" as if it were part of the script. I recall how my Dad would be upset when I left the loaf of bread on the counter open and allowed it to become stale. I recall how I would waste a bit of this or of that and how he would talk to me about how rough he had it way back when. Today I live in Florida and as a nation we are still dealing with every issue. We are still complaining about high prices and we still cry about the oil issue. I now have a car that costs a small fortune to fill up and a house that I complain about the price to keep it cool. I went shopping today for the small gathering we will have for Independence Day and look at the receipt and realize I may need to work two jobs to pay the bills. The price of food has rocketed and just this morning I scolded my teenage son for leaving the bread open. As I chided my son of how bad it was getting I flashed back to the time I had spent with my Dad. I realized that we as a nation have always had the issues and the problems and today is no different. I always hear about how we are in the declining days of America and I could not disagree more. America is not perfect and it will always be dealing with issues and we may not ever get it right. One thing I do know is that with all of her flaws and all of her problems America is my home. I, as a citizen know that I am part of something that is so much larger than me. One thing I do know is that because of the actions my Father took during World War II and seeing my son in the Navy that we as a nation will be alright. We have a group of young military personnel that are always on call that are there right now ensuring our freedom. You may not agree with all of the policies and you may not even like the military but you can't help thanking the individual for what they do. Without those young men and women in uniform the United States would not be celebrating anymore birthdays. Without the military our nation would not be as great and as you grill your burger take a moment and say a quiet prayer. Take a moment and thank the individual that makes up our line of defense. Even with our non-existent fuel policy, our high taxes, our old tax laws, our crooked politicians, we need to take a moment and not blame our boys and girls that serve the flag. Those who do serve do so at the pleasure of the President and that President answers to you and to me. As this election in November grows close do not choose to not make a choice. Do not think that either choice for office is so bad you will stay home. As my father would say, "if you stay home then don't complain about what you get'. As the election nears listen, learn and choose the candidate that will do the best job. Learn and educate yourself so our grand children can stand on a red, white and blue fire hydrant in 2076. That is the least we can do for them. While our Soldiers and Airman and Marines and Sailors give their time and some their lives the least you could do is vote for who you think will be best. Your choice for President does not have to be perfect because our system is not perfect. You need to vote so those that serve will know that those who are protected are at least worth protecting. America has become a land of slavery. I know that that is hard to accept but the truth is there if you are willing to listen for a few moments. I am making the bold statement that you have become a slave and basically do not even realize that it has happened. Let us first look at the word slave and explore the definition. To be a slave means that you are held in servitude of someone else. To be a slave you have to be completely subservient to a dominating influence. Now I want you to explore your relationship with the United States Government and the tax laws.
About fifteen years ago through no error of myself the company I worked for reported to the IRS that I earned $150,000.00 more than I reported. As a result I responded with certified letters (2X) and many phone calls. All my attempts were ignored as if I were ignoring the IRS. After almost one year of calling, mailing and doing everything in my power I was ransacked by the IRS. They garnished my wages, emptied my checking and put liens in the local courthouse on my home. Eventually I spoke to some "angel" in the "problem resolution office" and with the flip of a switch, I had everything reversed and returned as if it never happened. Although I did no wrong, the lien was on my credit report for ten years and it was never removed. After the ten years I had to petition the credit reporting agencies to have it removed. The IRS apologizes for nothing and to this day I have heard not even a whisper of "oops".
Getting back to slavery I want you to think about the freedoms and things that you own. You may say there has always been taxes, but you are wrong. The Income tax was not introduced until 1862 and was not even a permanent fixture until 1913. The point to be made is that if you think you have freedom just do not pay your income taxes. See what happens to your "freedom" if you do not cough up the cash. What will happen is that the IRS will come and take everything you own and leave you in the cotton fields without food, water or shelter. Unless of course you are provided with a nice prison cell somewhere.
If you do not get the point yet just ask yourself how long you have to work to pay your taxes. Let's just say that if the government took its cut of the cash before you received your first nickel, how long would you have to work? How far into the calendar year would you have to work before you could say this penny is mine?
Here is the answer...January, February, March, April and part of May. That's right, you have to work almost one half of one year to just pay your taxes! If you are not appalled by that and still do not think you are nothing more than a working class slave consider one more point. Let us look at property taxes. Do you really think you own that home you are living in now? If you do, you are wrong. You are merely renting your home for a price that is determined by the government. If you disagree with this statement then I suggest you try a test to prove me wrong. This test will have you not paying your "rent" (property taxes) for three years. At the end of those years see who "owns" the home.
America is not what it once was. America is slowly creating a greater gap between the haves and the have nots. So the next time you go to work or put gas in your tank or buy some beer or register your car or apply for a hunting license or glance at your phone bill or rent a motel room or any other activity, I want you to look at the taxes that are disguised as "fees". Maybe then you will realize that today we are nothing more than slaves to the government and working to have our money given to someone else that the government thinks it needs more.

I went to the theater today and plunked down my money and bought my popcorn and settled down for the show. As I sat there and watched the show I realized that the world up on that silver screen was perfect. I am not referring to the situation of the movie I am talking about the people in the movie. I did not see one over weight person from the beginning to the end. Not even the slightest hint that an obese person exists anywhere on the planet. It was at that moment that I started to look for other things that never crossed into my vision for those couple of hours.
As I looked for things in the movie that were unique to the world of Hollywood I noticed that there was no such thing as a homely female. Each and every lady that clambered across that screen was a perfect specimen of physical proportion. All of them were young and pretty and seemed as if having sex was as easy as having a glass of water.
I also went on to notice that there were no pimples anywhere to be seen. Even the teenagers were clear faced and acne free. Not even so much as one zit was anywhere to be seen. Also I looked at the teeth and they were perfect in every way imaginable. All the teeth were white (really white) and straight. There were so many perfect teeth that all the dentists would be out of business.
Next I noticed that money was never an issue. It was always there and it seemed as if the characters never really had to do any work. If they decided to get on an airplane and fly to the other side of the globe they just went. If the average person wanted to do this they would be stuck at the gate because they never paid to get a passport. After seeing the character go on an amazingly long foot chase I was humbled by his ability to sprint for such long distances.
The list could go on and on but I think I now understood. Who would want to go to the movies to see what is in there face everyday? Why would I want to go see some woman that has ugly teeth and is 100 pounds overweight? Why would I ever want to have to be cut short on my wants by a simple thing like money? Why would I ever want to pay to go see what I can see at Walmart anytime of any day?
As I sat there in the dark I realized I was out of popcorn and it disturbed me slightly. I had no cash left in my wallet for a refill and then thought I did not need it anyway. If I had another bucket of popcorn it would only make my belly get bigger and I would have to exercise even more tomorrow.
I realized that reality is an okay place but it sure is nice to escape to the movies. No where did I place those milk duds?
