I can remember in my youth, going to a movie with my brothers to see a James Bond movie. It cost 75 cents to get in and for that money I saw not only a " double feature" but also a cartoon before the show started. I remember walking about two miles to the high tech " multiplex" theater that had two movie houses under one roof. It was the theater to go to, as it was so modern. I remember the day very clearly and in my mind's eye I can still see the snow drifting down from the elevated train platform, as the train went by me. That was in New York about 1975 and that was then. Now is such a different reality. Last night I went to the movies and I saw a movie that took place in New York. I did not flinch when I spent over eight dollars to get in the theater. Heck, I did not even think twice about the fact that I should have taken out a loan before getting popcorn, candy and soda. The crux of my brief tirade here is not the cost of the evening, as I have come to expect to pay a small fortune for my choice of going to a movie. I know what I am am getting into and I accept my fate. Although tonight I received more than I bargained for, and what I received was no bargain at all. The movie was scheduled to start at 7:30 PM, so I arrived at 7:20 PM to be in my seat and settled before the show began. It was not a new release so I did not fear of not getting a seat. I hate crowded seating so I only attend movies right before they seem to show up on the DVD scene. When I sat down at 7:20 there were some local commercials running over and over again until 7:30. I prepared for the usual coming attractions but instead I was visually bombarded for 15 minutes with hand cream commercials, car commercials and a host of other products from websites to how I could have bought my ticket on line at some now forgotten website. It was now 7:45 PM and I had now been focused on 25 minutes of commercials. The lights then dimmed and the curtain widened a bit more and I settled in for the coming attractions, which are not as bad as the commercials I just witnessed. Instead of previews there was another round of commercials followed by 5 minutes of coming attractions. When the movie finally started at 8:00, I realized I just paid an amount of money almost equal to a mortgage payment, to see commercials. I had just sat through 40 minutes of products being hawked on the screen for the low price of $8.00!! I paid to sit through commercials. Yesterday I saw cartoons and today I see commercials. The fun was sucked out of that movie experience and I wonder if, and when I will ever want to go back to a movie again? I am tempted to send the theater a bill for my time because I was subjected to advertisements I did not want to see and I definely did not want to pay for. Hollywood take notice......You will not get my $8.00 anytime soon. The power always begins with one. Does anyone else feel like I do today? It was not too long ago that I was a news junkie and watched the news every chance I had during the day. I used to get upset when a political decision was against my belief or a country did something that made me fear for the safety of future generations. I drove in my car spending more time listening to all the talk radio commercials than actually any talk radio content, or so it seemed. I used to be up on all the things that were happening in the world. I was informed!!!
Of late I find myself really just not caring anymore. I hear about how our nation is going down the tubes with all the bailout money and how abortion foes are murdering people and how celebrities get arrested. The interesting thing is that I think I have given up and gained membership into the dumbest generation.
I spent the better part of June 6th asking my fellow generation members, and WAS NOT amazed that nobody knew that it was the anniversary of D-Day.
I heard North Korea was now able to send nukes to Alaska. I am glad I do not live in Alaska.
I read some contestant from American Idol revealed he was gay. I am glad I was not his roommate.
I heard abortion is killing a zillion or so babies every year. I am glad Mom didn't murder me.
I heard that America is doomed because the President is turning the USA into a Socialist nation. I am glad I will be able to benefit from the socialization of the medical culture, I just hope I do not get sick, because then I may care again.
I hear there are many people out of work. I don't care, I have a job
I heard there are some homeless people out there, I am glad I did not see one today, I might have felt guilty for a second or two.
I worried about all the illegal immigrants, but then remembered I really do not care.
I heard there is a battle to take away our gun rights, so I am happy to say I do not own a gun.
Somewhere in the world there are people who do not have access to clean drinking water but then I stopped thinking about it after the waiter brought me my glass of water.
I heard our military is killing civilians and I am really glad I don't know any of those people, because then I may have had to care.
A church missionary stopped at my door and I just closed the door, because I did not want to hear his opinion, because I really did not care about that either. Who needs God when you have the world?
YUP! I am now an official member of the dumbest generation, but the sad part is....I really don't care about that either!
Permalink Comments (2) The Wars In Iraq & Afganistan Are OverPosted Tuesday, June 02, 2009 (171 days 21 hours ago.) Viewed 75 times. It was not too long ago that I would turn on the news and hear the daily tally of how many American soldiers, sailors and Marines were killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. When the Oval Office had George Bush behind the desk the news networks bombarded us on a daily basis of the names of who died the previous day. It did not matter if the unfortunate soul became deceased in a accident or by a bomb. I could always count on flipping to page two of The Pensacola News Journal and seeing the running total of the newly maimed and dead. It was there in my face on a daily basis, it was never not there. One thing that I noticed is that since the day we anointed our new Commander in Chief that the running total of combat deaths has ceased to be published. No longer do we see the daily total of dead. No more do we see the names of those that have made the ultimate sacrifice for the Commander in Chief, that ordered them into harm's way. Being the skeptical person I am I have searched daily for what used to be there, but is now absent. I pick up Time magazine and only see noble pictures of our President and stories of any subject, but that of the deaths of our military personnel. I no longer see the daily count on the news shows. I no longer see the heated debates about the human cost of the war on the talk shows. I no longer see anything about the war dead. Why is this? What reason could there be that the nobody is dying anymore? The early reason I thought was that there was an agenda to whip up the naive public against President Bush. An early thought was that there was a mass media attempt to re-visit Vietnam era news coverage in an attempt to turn the public against that which President Bush was trying to accomplish. I thought maybe the media was attempting to make Bush appear foolish or only out for oil profits. After a long period of contemplatation I concluded that in America we only have news organizations that reported accurate and unbiased news stories. I turned to other thoughts of why I no longer see the daily death count. It could not possibly be because the American media had a liberal, Socialist agenda. After long and thoughtful weeks that turned into months of not seeing the daily death count I have concluded that America won the war. The war must be over and nobody else is getting killed. I was a bit shocked that there was no formal announcement and celebration that the war was over, but what other reason could there be for the sudden silence of the media? What else but victory could be the reason why I am not seeing the count of war dead on a daily basis, other than the fact that nobody is getting killed? As I sit here i am sure glad that I live in a free country that has news organizations that are dedicated to the truth and well being of America. I am grateful that the news media was on hand for the full four years of military deaths, so the sacrifice of those would not be in vain. I am so glad for our media that has carried the struggles of the military and their missions to the front pages of our publications. I am so grateful for our media that is honest and provides unbiased truth the those of that have died to keep us free. The only thing I can't figure out is why the media has not shouted out loud we won the war since Obama took over? We must have won because the daily tally of dead has ended. We must have won because....well we really don't hear anything at all anymore about anything the military does......since Obama took office. Permalink Comments (3) Money, Gold and NothingPosted Thursday, April 16, 2009 (218 days 16 hours ago.) Viewed 800 times. I sit here with a dollar bill on my desk and ponder the silent story I see before me. I think of all the things that people go through to have access to this fairly small piece of paper. I close my eyes and see the souls of those that are spending this moment incarcerated for stealing the relatives of this small one dollar bill. Men and woman have killed to have this and possibly even more have died to prevent them from being taken from their possession. The dollar bill holds a story that we all share, but seldom really know.
We read about how our economy is not doing well. The "value" of the dollar is down and it is getting harder and harder to be able to "earn" a dollar. The wealthy among us have piles of this paper scattered all around the world and the paranoid have it stashed under their mattress. The Federal Government borrows it and prints it before they ship it out in armored cars. The government taxes us and then takes it from us to give to someone else they feel is more deserving.
We go to work and spend hours upon hours trading our life's clock away in exchange for a set wage. The clock ticks and we all chase the dollar throughout the day. Once I was asked how different would my life be if I did not have to pursue, work or chase the almighty dollar. Some say money does not buy happiness, but it more than likely can be a decent down payment. There are those that say "the love of money is the root of all evil" which is a really profound statement to make, if you stop a moment to think about what is being said.
They one thing we really have never thought about is that money is really nothing. The government prints some paper and there is nothing of value that backs it, other than the fact that the government says it is worth a dollar. This is the same government that allows babies to be killed and wars to be fought and people to be executed. This is the same government that does not have enough money to pay their own bills, with the paper only they are allowed to call money.
The one lasting thought I would like to part you with is WHY do we believe it is worth anything? Why do we work countless hours to obtain a piece of paper that is only worth something because the government, who has nothing, says it is worth something?
I would like to spend more time writing about this, but I have to go to work so I can earn enough money to live. Then, I think I never have enough money, and I really start to spin when I ponder that what I do not have enough of...... is actually...............worthless.
