The work and planning for opening a McDonalds in Moscow was a joint venture of the Canadian subsidiary of McDonalds and the Moscow city council.

The first person that conceived the idea and lead the effort was George Cohon, president of McDonalds Restaurants of Canada.

Very good. George wrote about it in his book, "To Russia with Fries". A good read.

The first Soviet McDonald's opens until January of 1990, in Moscow. It is the largest McDonald's in the world . McDonald's Canada is responsible for this opening (US didn't help for political reasons). The Soviet McDonald's gets supplied from farms within the USSR. You can pay with rubles, not dollars, and if you're hungry, try another restaurant option because you can pass some time at the waiting line on certain hours of the day.

It was not Soviet in 1990.

I watched an interesting video on this in my Marketing classes at CCSU. It was a long process in which they hired both american managers and native managers. The building for the first McDonalds was huge and I don't think they really needed to market too much since the people of Moscow really wanted the McDonalds. The hardest part of the entire process was trying to get large enough potatoes to make McDonalds french fries.
