There are so many reasons. My husband has atopic dermatitis also known as eczema. The doctor has determined that the cause of his itchy red blotches is immunological. In other words, he has an over abundance of histamine produced in his skin because of some allergy or other. We've not had testing done to determine what this allergy is. I suspect, because we've eliminated fragrances and all sorts of chemicals from our home life, that it has to do with all the crap that he is exposed to at work.
There is also contact dermatitis which is simply coming into contact with something that your skin does not like. Things like poison ivy, poison oak and sumac are obvious. But what is not so obvious are things like wool (which causes me to break out in a rash), onion or garlic juice, cedar and a myriad other things.
Then too, rashes can be psychosomatic. Never discount the minds ability to affect the body for both good and bad. Generally speaking though, I'd be that most rashes have a physical cause.
Sorry about the multiple of answers. The system was acting up and I clicked submit several times because it was telling me to log in when I was already logged in. :(

These days, one has to remember to boil one's date in very hot water for an hour to avoid such things.
