How long will a lightning bug live in an opened jar?

As long as it takes for it to figure out that the jar is open!

As long as it loves the feel of the jar and the new home it's been given. If it doesn't like it, it will look for a new place.

It will stick around just long enough for the birds to notice it, in which case it will then fly like a banshee to go hide in the trees. 2 hours is about all you'll have.
