Why are hobbies called "hobbies"?

Someone thought it was a good idea. I think it's a good question. This is the best I can do without looking it up. I'll wait for more answers.

Because "work" was already taken.

Hobbies consume time but not enough to be called a project. Just a lucky guess without any help.

You're right, James. And also, if you make money at it, it becomes a job and no longer a hobby.

I'm not sure, but perhaps it came from "hobby horses"?

It is because the hobbies are being habitually done.
