Regularly. Just how often will depend on the age of your vehicle, what type it is, what fuel it uses, how you drive and how many miles you drive. For the average driver (if there is such a thing) then I guess about once a month should do the trick.

Oops, hardly ever but we get it changed regularly every 4000 miles...

» Answer from Bruce Horst Answer given 3 years 124 days ago.
You can check your oil as often as you'd like. Older vehicles or vehicles known to burn or leak oil should be checked more often, adding oil when low.

Changing oil is a different story... I think it used to be that general knowledge was that oil should be changed every 5,000 miles. Then quick-change oil services started popping up and they started saying to change your oil every 3,000 or 3,500 miles.

What's hard to understand is how the recommended mileage is going down while we hear from oil companies that because of new technologies in synthetic oils and better engines, we can drive longer without an oil change. I guess no one told the quick-change services.

Um...that's not very bright.

never until oil change, car doesn't lead or burn oil, my older car I checked weekly

» Answer from Shaun Baird Answer given 3 years 121 days ago.
It depends really. Ideally Id say once per week is best. Older cars should adhere to this, or once per month at the worst. For newer cars you can get away with just once per month or two, but use your own discretion.

It is best to check your oil level each time you stop to get gas.

» Answer from Susan Gamsky Answer given 3 years 116 days ago.
I drive a car that is known to burn oil. I check it whenever I fill the gas tank. Recently a mechanic told me to switch to a heavier oil to reduce friction and burn.

» Answer from Thomas Kong Answer given 3 years 112 days ago.
The engine oil of a car should be checked every 3-4 months equivalent to around 5000km. Chnages should come when that roughly doubles.

» Answer from Angie Loomis Answer given 3 years 112 days ago.
Never! I just had this conversation with my in-laws a couple weekends ago. I was saying how I used to always check my oil with my first couple vehicles as a teenager, then I got my college car and could never get the thing open so I quit ever since. I figure with a newer model car that I have now, it shouldn't need it...mostly because my husband never mentions it or checks it for me!

» Answer from Chuck Patti Answer given 3 years 111 days ago.
I don't check mine all that often, because my car still has low mileage, but i would say it is a good habit to check with every fill-up. Catching a potential problem could save thousands.

» Answer from Rebecca Park Totilo Answer given 3 years 110 days ago.
I let my car tell me when its time and then I ignored it for several months.

Weekly for general driving and always right before a long road trip. Do it every Saturday or Sunday. It's a good habit to have.

the only time i check mine is when i am do for a change, My son's car, a Honda accord, however has a built in gauge that displays the oil life left in his oil so you clearly know when to change it.

First of all, it depends very much on how much driving you do. For an average car, I would say every 500 miles or so.

» Answer from Ralph Pedersen Answer given 3 years 106 days ago.

I check it every 2 thousand miles or so (inbetween oil changes). I'm a commute driver so I rack up 2k fairly fast, so regardless of 'time' I prefer to go by mileage.

once a year

I usually check my oil levels every month. If you have your car serviced for an oil change, they will usually let you stop back by and they will check your fluid levels for you anytime.
