Why don't people think of themselves as Atheist when they accept only one God, but not the others?

Because one God is one more than an atheist believes in.

Some people do make the argument that almost everyone is an "atheist" with respect to Zeus, Thor etc, and point out that an atheist just goes one god further.

I think that using "atheist" in that way is more confusing than helpful though.

I agree Ben. Good explanation.

Because the word atheist literally means "without god".

I believe an atheist is unreligious, an unbeliever, per sé.

I believe in one God and although, I don't consider my self religious, I still have faith. I find it helps me, makes life a little more bearable, even in some form, understandable.

Atheism is the position of not believing in god (with a lowercase 'g') which means any and all gods. Somebody who believes in one or many Gods therefore cannot be consider an atheist by definition.

Which reminds me, did you hear about the agnostic dyslexic insomniac? He used to lie awake at night wondering whether there really was a dog...

(which I'm allowed to say because I'm dyslexic myself!)
Comment from Kenny St.pierre (679) 38 days 17 hours ago.
Good explanation Tim. I also liked your question about the agnostic dyslexic insomniac. lol

When I asked the question I was of the mindset wondering why people accept ONE God and not the others when all things that we know of have either families, varieties, and/or similarities.

Since there is no such thing as ONE tree, ONE rock, ONE animal, ONE universe, ONE mouse, ONE blade of grass, etc., wouldn't it be fair to say that for those who "believe" in God there would have to be more than ONE God.

Wouldn't God have parents and offspring of his own? Wouldn't he have a mate? Wouldn't there be other "similar" God's with parents and offspring? Why and how could there be just ONE God? What justifies these notions?

*** Let's say a boy's parents had isolated him from the world since birth, and presented him with only ONE tree, ONE rock, and ONE dog. Would it not be reasonable to assume at some point during the boy's development, that he would wonder if there is more than ONE tree, ONE rock, or ONE dog. Would it be just as reasonable to think that since he has parents he may conclude his parents had parents, and that his grandparents had parents? He would contemplate the necessity of the tree and dog's existence to be explained.

I asked, "Why do people accept only ONE God" based on these observations? I am sure in the the boy's case he would eventually figure out that the dog's existence is impossible without the reproduction of other dogs before it? I'm positive that at some point the boy would inadvertently break the rock, and then muse that since it has became two pieces, the rock may have been a piece from a bigger rock in times past. There would have to be a time when the boy would question the ONE tree's existence, and whether there are other varieties also. Even stars are born from other stars!

Yet, multitudes of people believe in ONE God, and reject the others.

Theist claim they only need to believe in ONE God to be a Theist, thus clearing them of being Atheist. Yet when we look at the enormous varieties in life and inanimate objects, their ONE God notion seems absurd and contradictory. Why would they reject God's parents? Is God possible without parents who would of course be God's themselves? Why do they not accept this notion?

If people had never seen a Dog before, and someone said, "I believe in dog?" How would that justify that they are now a "Dogist" if others believed there is more than ONE dog. Both are based on beliefs, but at least the person who believes in "Dogs" is much more in touch with the workings of the real world and our observations of it - making their case a much more likely possibility and in a sense a "real Dogist."

Again, there is nothing I know of in our observable world that has just ONE of it's kind. To believe in things without reason or good cause is screwy enough, but when people believe in something and claim, "This is the ONE true belief" - is off the charts.

My next Search Warp question will be, "Does anyone know of anything that is just ONE, and there is no other like it?"

Because being "Atheist" means that you don't believe in God (my opinion), or what I've learned. So, if a person is "Atheist", why are they accepting even [one] God?

Oops, I asked a question in a question ... I always end up doing that.
Answer from Mar Frank (74) 43 days 13 hours ago. More questions answered by this person)
No, they cannot be Atheist which according to Encarta Dictionaries is somebody who does not believe in God or deities. They are Monotheist who believe that there is only one God.

I have a lot of Atheist friends and was once one. For me, Atheist believes that God do exist but they deny to believe His existence even though all things reveal that there is a Creator of it. They want to be reason-oriented and scientific that without them knowing they are being superficial and competing with God. They wanted to rebel to God by not recognizing Him and instead put up a God for themselves which is their own selves but in the long run they end up very religious and spiritual once converted.

Christians were called atheists at one time because they didnt worship God,they worshipped a crucified man
Comment from Teresa Ortiz (11,014) 40 days 6 hours ago.
Hi Paul interesting. Never heard this, but whoever called Christians atheist for this reason, probably was not aware that the crucified Man is to be worshipped because he is God in the flesh - the Son of God.

Thanks for sharing this, I learned something new today. I am going to look into this further. You peaked my interest.

I always thought that Atheists don't believe in any god. Just shows you what I know . . .

An atheist is someone who doesn't believe any God of any kind. They don't believe or accept one God or 100 Gods. They have no respect for those who do believe in the one and only God.
Comment from Kenny St.pierre (679) 38 days 13 hours ago.
"They have no respect for those who do believe in the one and only God."

*** Are you saying people have no respect just because they disagree with you? Shouldn't you be "happy" that there are others who "believe" differently that you? It should offer you a golden opportunity to show the non-believers God's power that "supposedly" resides within you.

If I believed as strongly as you "think" you do, that there is "one true God," I certainly wouldn't be wasting my time with a comment wrapped in anger." Nope, instead, I'd be of such joy that nothing anyone said could possibly break my spirit or anger me, and I'd also be boasting of how I acquired that power.

I see too many of you so-called "believer's" claiming God is in your life and within you, and that he changed your life - yet I repeatedly see more trash talking from those of you who preach, then I do from those who don't believe. Too many of you "god fearing people" act as though your feet are 3 feet off the ground, when in fact your noses are 3 feet up in the air!

It's called selective vision!

Hi Kenny,

You certainly jumped all over angela's case - but I guess I understand why, but hopefully she did not mean to be all inclusive in her statement. Thank you for not being all inclusive in your response. :-) Teresa

Thank you Teresa. Good observation, and I thank you for your comments.

You're right! She may not have meant to be all inclusive, but you know how it goes...It's hard to always know for sure someone's emotion behind a simple text....Although she did say, "They."

Thanks again.......Kenny

Hi Angela, interesting statement at the end of your answer. While there are some atheists who have no respect for those who believe, that is not true for all. I have many friends - whom are theists and they respect me and I them. It's also true that many believers have no repect for athiests. I think we have to be careful not to be all inclusive in anything.
