Well, let me think, I suppose you could probably, no wait a minute, I was thinking of, how about, no that’s not correct either, perhaps if we were to, but I once saw an, no that doesn’t really count, but in all seriousness, if you take into account that one really, nope, actually, once you think about it, there could, conceivably, be at least, oh yeah, you wanted to know the most, I know you can only have one in a row, so, as for how many in all, then it would, in all essence, be plausible to have, wait, I’ve got it, there could be no more than, …how many periods can you have in one sentence?

English grammar, if I'm not mistaken, doesn't have existing rule on how many commas allowable in a sentence. You can have as many commas as you can as long as it's necessary and constructive to the point you want to convey to your readers.

There are no hard and fast rules in the Style Manual or that are being taught in grammar classes that I can recall. Obviously, excessive use of the comma makes the structure of the sentence difficult to follow. There are, however, clear rules when commas apply. These are taught in early gradeschool grammar classes and apply to the written word - from creative writing to press releases to novels. If in doubt about commas, read the sentence aloud, give pause at the commas, then continue to the end of the sentence. The rhythm of the words should flow well, break properly and end at the period. A runon sentence is easy to identify in this fashion. When tempted to overuse commas, use this approach and you'll never go wrong. One other hint: compound sentences are easily identified by clearcut statements separated by and, etc. In those instances, they can be separated with a semi-colon or rewritten into two or more complete sentences. Don't fall into the trap of overusing commas.

As many as it takes for the sentence to run smoothly with causing a run-on sentence. In other words, the sentence should reflect a single, complete thought and not a string of thoughts.

I doubt there is a certian number that you can say is the cut off - English is too holistic. Though I would be careful not to use them too often.

Note: commas are never used to take a breath. They are only used for comma parenthisis or listing.

I guess I meant to say, "As many as the sentence justifiably allows."

Lately it seems the less the better - I have started using a dash when there is a pause or change of thought.
