What is considered the "top" side of toast?

The side that faces you when you take it out of the toaster and place it on your plate. Much like the flip of a coin, either one side or the other will come up when it lands. That's the top side.

Sorry,but i think if you butter it, then oops, drop it,the top is the none buttered side,always!It always falls butter side down from a worktop

It's the side that hits the floor when you drop it. If you want to make sure you always butter the proper side, drop it on the floor first.
