Depending on what you mean by "insane". That word could mean a lot of different things. If you're talking about schizophrenia, then some schizophrenics may not know they are insane, while some have the possibility to know if they are told, "hey, there is no one there, so just ignore them because they're all in your head". This is what happened to John Nash if I remember correctly, a great mathematician schizophrenic who, realized he was insane because the little girl he hallucinated wasn't ageing.

When they interviewed a street musicain who had once been famous and also paranoid schizophrenic, he actually knew that he was extremely mentally challenged. He chose to live on the streets and not to take medication for his illness because it interfered with his ability to compose and play a musical instrument, so I do believe that people know. You also cannot discount how many mentally-challenged people end up in psych wards because of strange behavior or sucide attempts. Many are also on some sort of a disability income because of not being able to work, which means that they had to be aware of someone applying for it if they did not themselves. Good question that is most challenging to answer.

I heard that many professional people do actually consult a psychiatrist once in a while so guess there's lots of people suffer from some sort of mental disorder in this modern world. Most of them rely on the medication.

I used to work with many schizophrenics. They are not all the same. Some of the higher functioning people with schizophrenia know there's something wrong with them, and they are the ones who seek help on their own.

I like Suzy's answer, above. I would add that we live in a culture that stigmatizes people who see a psychologist or psychiatrist. Think about it, if you are called as a witness in a trial, a lawyer might try to discredit you by pointing out that you have seen a psychologist.

I am studying to become a psychologist now, so this is a question that interests me.

The recent shooting can tell how alarming and serious it has become for innocent people working together among an insane guy. One never knows what happens next minute if a gun is fired at you. Like I said, almost everyone has some level of unsound mind. Thanks for sharing, G.
