To insure something is to take action in advance to protect against potential risks, e.g. if you insure a car, you are protected if something bad happens to it - the insurer will be liable for the cost (well, terms & conditions may apply)

To ensure something is to "make it sure", so "I will ensure your safety" means "I will take whatever action I can to make sure you are safe"

Insure is synonymous to ensure, meaning making certain or making sure, but mostly, insure is used relating to buying or selling insurance.

If you insure against something unpleasant happening, you do something to protect yourself in case it happens such as you insure your property against fire you therefore pay money to an insurance company just in case.

To ensure something happens means to make certain it does.

For example: we ensure our first class service at all time!

As the lawyers have told me, to insure is to offer a guarantee. To ensure is, as Ben says to take action to make sure.

I have ensured that this is an accurate answer; however, I will not insure its accuracy.

So is insure just a greater degree of ensure? if ensure = make sure, does insure= make sure + a guarantee?
