Can shaving make hair grow back in thicker?

I have this argument with a friend where I say shaving cannot possibly make the hair in his beard thicker or thinner or change it in anyway since the hair follicle controls that and shaving the surface cannot change the follicle itself. Any opinions?

U don't think it does or all these guys (yours and mine) who shave their heads would soon be like young pups again - is it happening? And us women who shave their legs - well.... not a pretty picture but it really did not happen that way I don't think. Marijo

I shaved my head for a couple of years. Now that I've stopped, my hair is as thick as it ever was. I don't think shaving makes hair grow thicker. You either have lots of hair, like I do, or you don't. Try to contemplate what is involved in shaving your hair. How does the hair know it has been shaved? It doesn't.

I urge Bruce to just do it!

I did, but she won't let me post pictures!

That's what I'm saying G! Shaving can't possibly change the hair structure...

There is no correlation between shaving your hair and thickness of the hair when it grows back. It could be an illusion, it may look thicker in comparison to when it was shaven or bald. I am putting my two cents in.

I agree. The only thing that does make sense to me is that the shaved hair may be blunt on the ends, so therefor maybe seem thicker at first.

Jean, I think that you are absolutely right. What does it matter if you cut off a hair at the surface of the skin (as in a beard) or two inches from the surface of the skin (as in the hair on your head)?

If shaving made hair thicker, it would solve the baldness problem. If only...

The only reason shaving might help is that it would reduce the stress that is associated with long hair (whether facial or otherwise). Pulling and combing induces some stress to the follicles, and eventual loss.

Ever notice how thin a child's hair gets when it is constantly pulled back, or braided? That's due to follicle stress.

Hope this helps.

I don't know the answer Jean, but I have to ask. Is this really about Mr. T?
Comment from Jean Horst (1,178) 2 days 8 hours ago.
Ha, yep. Mr. T. has a secret fear that if he shaves his head his hair will grow back differently somehow. Which I say is scientifically impossible...
