Robin, if you click the superscript number (shown in parenthesis) right hand side next to your name, (near the blinking light bulb if you are logged in) it will take you to the explanation of how the popularity rating is calculated. This is the author's popularity rating and not for the article rating. My apology.

The number of views, number of readers, search engine referrals are some of the factors to determine your article popularity rating.

If a SearchWarp writer clicks on his or her popularity rating from one of his or her articles, there is adding information that is displayed to help explain how the number is calculated.

The most common confusion is because of the fact that page views are not used to calculate popularity ratings since page views are too easy to manipulate. Instead, the popularity rating is calculated from the number of people who come from outside of SearchWarp to read articles, typically from search engines like Google or from web sites like blogs.

Add to this the fact that when an article is featured on the home page, it typically receives a lot of page views. If the popularity number was based on page views, then the writers with the highest popularity ratings would be the ones that the editors picked for the home page, which wouldn't be fair.

It's not a perfect system, but it's the best method we've found so far.
