Job Search The Career In You

Posted Monday, April 06, 2009 (232 days 18 hours ago.) Viewed 20 times.

Here we are, in the middle of the biggest recession in the history of the world. The job search dilemma seems grim with each passing day, and unemployment has just skyrocketed to an all time high across the globe. Now before you get the wrong idea, and think I am totally pessimistic these are the facts of the world, and the truth is always difficult to face. That being said there are great opportunities for those who are strong in heart, in the face of economic uncertainty.

Think about it for a moment, if you have been laid off, or down sized, made redundant, or whatever you want to call it, you have tremendous decisions to make, why not choose the job or field that you are truly interested in. For example if you were a used car salesman and always wanted to be a teacher why not pursue your life long goal. Make sense? Your recent termination can be your personal motivation, to do what you have always wanted to do.

If you choose to take this cramped and narrow road, know one thing, it's not going to be easy. Anything worth while is never easy, but when the goal has been achieved, the taste of success was well worth the effort. One of the main tools that everyone should have in their job search bag of tricks is the ability to reinvent your self. One of the greatest examples of personal reinvention can be found in an unlikely place.

Can you think of one mega POP star in particular, that has been around forever, and has mastered this art? It's none other than the material girl herself MADONNA, This is not a personal endorsement of her music, life style, or anything like that, but if you were to look up reinvention in the dictionary her face would be right there next to Einstein.

Over the years she somehow comes out with totally new music and a completely different look (hair style and outfit included). The point is she found it necessary to make personal changes in order to keep her self visible, to a brand new audience who is seeing her for the very first time.

When it comes to your job search, are you locked into one particular type of job with little or no options, or can you be flexible enough to try something totally different, out of your comfort zone, and increase your chances to survive.

What ever you decide to do remember determination, and flexibility, has always been the name of the game. If it worked for the material girl for over two decades, maybe it can work for you.

The Resume Revolution

Posted Sunday, March 15, 2009 (254 days 21 hours ago.) Viewed 11 times.

Resumes must now emphasize keywords and industry-specific terms and acronyms.

So no matter how you write your resume or for what job niche, chances are it will be e-scanned and e-distributed! Resumes are not a time to be funny.

Believe me, your resume is probably already funny enough without any additional effort on your part.

Resumes are read quickly, and bulleted sentences are much easier for a recruiter to read than long paragraphs. The bulleted sentences in your resume should also begin with action words, such as "developed," "initiated," or "managed."  Action words add strength to your resume.

Employers often receive more than 100 resumes each day; they skim each of these in 7 to 15 seconds. In order to catch a prospective employer's attention and fuel his or her interest in you as a potential employee, refer to the following tips.

Employers expect you to be Internet savvy and come to them! You must market yourself online with the right resume tool. The slightest imperfection will condemn your resume and cover letter to the employer's trash can.

Network at the gym, a volunteer organization, a professional association, chamber of commerce, Employment Development Department, Rotary Club, church groups -- anything you can think of to be around people. Eventually the conversation can lead to job leads, learning information about what different companies do, contacts for informational interviewing, etc. Ask the people you know if they can refer you to a job opening. You can even call your previous employers and see if they can help.

Ask them to pass it on to anyone who might be interested in hiring you.

Hundreds of job-related sites on the Internet offer advice on preparing a resume. Ask if you can stay in touch. If the mood seems right, ask if you can buy them a cup of coffee.

Commercial Paper or Toilet Paper You Decide.

Posted Tuesday, October 07, 2008 (1 year 48 days ago.) Viewed 40 times.

Commercial paper by definition according to Wikipeda is as follows, "

Commercial paper an unsecured promissory note with a fixed maturity of one to 270 days. It is a money-market security issued by large banks and corporations backed only by their promise to pay the face amount, on the date specified on the note". Back in the day, when a man gave his word, there was no question that he had every intention to fulfill his commitment. You've herd the expression my word is my bond. Now the word bond has been substituted for bail out, and commitment and traditional values go right out the window.

I never thought I would see the day, when major banks that have been in business since the creation of water, go belly up at the blink of an eye. One comedian put it this way, "I'll write you a check, but I think my bank bounced yesterday". It's hard to tell which way the financial rollercoaster will end up. For many of us were sitting in the front seat, of the bailout express with no seat belts, there is no one at the controls and were approaching another humongous drop down into oblivion.

Those who want to purchase a house can't buy one. People who own houses can't keep them, foreclosures are through the roof, CEO's that run their companies into the ground open there golden parachutes, and float off into the sunset, while wall street is in financial meltdown mode.

Doing research for this article I came across some interesting points.

Commercial Paper is an unsecured promissory note issued by industrial, commercial, or financial companies. Investors lend the issuer money for specified number of days at a specified interest rate. Let's translate that into the real world, shall we? You go to a bank and ask for a loan with no collateral, no assets, and no proof of income verification what so ever.

In the real world how far do you think Joe Public would get with this financial plan?

The sad truth is not far at all. On the other hand what applies to an individual does not apply to major banks across America. Even though the rules have been changed to favor those banks and corporations with deep pockets, the results have been the same, total disaster.

The Economic devastation has been so great; it has been felt through out financial markets all over the world. Just to make a quick buck at the tax payer's expense, some have jeopardized the lives of millions of families all across America. A friend of mind said he lost over $140,000 from his 401K. I'm so mad with my friend for loosing that kind of money for two very important reasons.

1. Why didn't he show me how to make that kind of money, are we friends or what?

2. Now I can't ask him for a loan, because he is just as broke and desperate as I am!

So what will be the final results? Who knows the Commercial Paper, may be only good for toilet paper, only the future can tell.

I would like to write more about this subject, but unfortunately I have to go, I'm late for my second job.

I Can Survive Prostate Cancer

Posted Thursday, October 02, 2008 (1 year 54 days ago.) Viewed 45 times.

Prostate cancer continues to be a major threat to men's health, the second most common cancer in men, in many countries. Therefore it is increasingly important that those faced with difficult clinical questions make the right decisions. Prostate cancer is a relatively common type of cancer, affecting the small walnut-shaped prostate gland located near base of the bladder found only in men. The gland surrounds the upper segment of the urethra, the tube that leads from the bladder to the penis.

This type of cancer is a malignant growth of cells of the prostate gland, called adenocarcinoma. Prostate cancer commonly occurs in men over age 50.

Symptoms include frequent or painful urination, blood in the urine, sexual dysfunction, swollen lymph nodes in the groin, and pain in the pelvis, hips, back, or ribs.

Prostate cancer generally takes a long time to progress and it can take 10 years before it is detected. However, some men have a particularly aggressive form of the disease, and the disease can grow and spread more quickly.

This form of cancer poses major challenges in developed countries. In England it is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, and the second most common cause of death from cancer in men (after lung cancer).

This Type of cancer is a disease with strong geographic variation, both internationally and also within individual countries or regions. Like most cancers, the development of prostate cancer typically occurs over a long period of time.

African American men should begin prostate cancer testing at age 40. African American men and all men with a family history of prostate cancer should, also get an annual PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood test. Other men can wait till age 50 for the annual PSA test.

Prostate cancer is difficult to treat without life-changing side effects. The gland, which helps produce semen, is lodged deep in the abdomen, just below the bladder. While the disease will claim nearly 31,000 deaths this year, there is growing evidence that educational efforts leading to early detection and diagnosis are resulting in lower mortality.

Medical experts who encourage regular screening believe current scientific evidence shows that finding and treating prostate cancer early, when treatment might be more effective, may save lives.

Researchers have recently identified a series of gene markers that, when present with family history of the disease, increase a patient's risk of prostate cancer more than nine times.

Those markers, say researchers, can be detected in a simple saliva or blood sample - good news for a condition whose prognosis is improved by early detection. Researchers say they will soon be reporting results of a phase II study and are planning phase III studies. They hope the drug can be on the market in 2011. So if you're reading this blog, and you have not been tested, don't wait for the last minute. The life you save may be your own.

I Can Survive Breast Cancer

Posted Wednesday, October 01, 2008 (1 year 55 days ago.) Viewed 65 times.

Breast cancer usually shows as a lump or thickening in the breast tissue, although most breast lumps are not cancerous. Breast cancer (BC) is the most frequent malignant disease among women. According to American reports every third cancer is diagnosed as BC. Breast cancer is also far more common in post-menopausal women, and the risk continues to increase with rising age.

Breast cancer is an area of tissue that has an abnormal and uncontrolled growth of cells (tumor). It can either be malignant (cancerous) or benign ( not cancerous). Breast cancer may be diagnosed before any symptoms occur through screening. The NHS National Breast Screening Programmed provides free screening for breast cancer for all women over the age of 50. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, and mammograms as images are extremely complex with many degrees of variability across the population. Breast-cancer screening procedures suffer from several complications with a relatively high error rate.

Screening in the United States is usually initiated in response to a physician's recommendation (known as "opportunistic screening"), and women are advised to have annual screening mammograms. By contrast, breast cancer screening programs in Norway and in some other European countries regularly send letters to all women in a specific age range inviting them to have a screening mammogram. Breast cancer screening is an important part of preventive care. A mammogram helps detect early breast cancer. Breast cancer screening means checking a woman's breasts for cancer before there are signs or symptoms of the disease.

Mammograms can miss some cancers. But despite their limitations, they remain a very effective and valuable tool for decreasing suffering and death from breast cancer. Mammogram is the most widely used screening test for cancer of the breast. Breast lumps found on mammography are benign 90% of the time.

Mammograms, self-exams and clinical breast exams do not always detect breast cancer causing false negative In day-to-day practice, mammograms can miss more than a quarter of all tumors.

Women may receive chemotherapy before or after breast surgery. The doctor can also use chemotherapy to treat cancer that has come back. Women who have an altered gene related to breast cancer and who have had breast cancer in one breast have an increased risk of developing breast cancer in the other breast.

These women also have an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer, and may have an increased risk of developing other cancers. Women also completed a 15-item questionnaire to evaluate their levels of anxiety, depression and happiness and optimism.

Increasing age is the biggest single risk factor for breast cancer. For those women who do have a family history of breast cancer, your risk may be elevated a little, a lot, or not at all. Increasingly chemotherapy (drug treatment) and hormone therapy may be given before operations and/or radiotherapy. Both have generally been shown to have a positive effect on survival.
