The city of New Orleans was awarded an NFL franchise on November 1, 1966. Since that date, the New Orleans Saints have struggled as an organization in their win/loss ratios. However, in 1987, the Saints were able to make their first appearance in a playoff game. Since that year, their win record has been wavering, and their team plagued with injuries for key players. The 2005 catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina has added to the city’s grief and despair.
Unfortunately, the Saints are one of few NFL teams that have never been able to attain a trip to the Superbowl, but the tides may be turning for 2006. With 2005 Heisman Trophy winner, Reggie Bush, and quarterback, Drew Brees, who holds the NFL leader title in passing yards as of 12/08/06, New Orleans ’ future looks bright. The Saints have a standing of 8 -4, and this is just what the city of New Orleans needs during this time of healing and rebuilding.
