Core exercise for golf. This is a very popular phrase used on the TV during PGA prodcasts when commentators are talking about the top players and what they are doing to play at an even higher leve. Vijay and his trainer focus on the area of his body regularly. He's hitting his drives as long or longer than he ever has!
When you think of core training exercises for golf I want you to concentrate on the rotaional aspect to get the most out of it. Isn't the golf swing rotating back, then rotating through? If you agree, then you should be doing as many of these exercises as possible in your golf exercise routine.
The most important thing for a golfer to do is take a good hard look at what's keeping him or her from improving. Golf specific strength training is one area for sure. What most amateur golfers ignore is the devolopment of improved strenth in the area of the body that can improve their performance and driving distance the quickest.
I'm talking about your core area!
This part of your body goes from navel up to your sternum. It is the main power source to driving distance! Be clearly aware of this! Look at is as the area as a golfer that needs to be at peak strength AND flexibility.
Greg Norman use to focus on his belt when he want to increase his driving distance. The faster he could get his belt turning through the swing, the longer he hit his drives. He didn't know it, but he had a very high level of core strength.
Two easy golf exercises that work your core are the abdominal crunch and lower back hyperextensions. Those two exercises are perfect for a golfer just starting a golf exercise routine to improve the strength of their core and also to protect their lower back from getting injured.
When you've done those core exercises for a couple of weeks, you can then add a rotation to the crunch movement to make it more golf specific. Your lower back extension exercise can also have a little rotation added to it.
The next progression would be to your feet. Do many more golf specific exercises for your core with exercise tubing, medicine balls and even dumbbells.
I hope you will strongly consider implementing a core exercise for golf program into your improvment approach. If you do, you will experience the longest drives of your life! Blowing by your playing partners on a regular basis!
