Straight off, I don't own a Panerai Luminor Submersible; my wife does. Although Panerai watches were primarily designed for use under-water and are therefore on the large size, my wife loves the weight and chunkiness of the Panerai Luminor Submersible wristwatch. She also thinks the Panerai Submersible is a very beautiful watch and I happen to agree.

As well as being a very beautiful and expensive divers watch, the Panerai Luminor Submersible is also a exquisitely crafted and well built piece of precision engineering. There are three watches in the Panerai Luminor Submersible collection; the PAM00243, the PAM00024 and the PAM00025. The Panerai PAM00025 comes with a titanium casing, whereas the other two come with stainless steel casing. My wife owns the Panerai Luminor PAM00024, so it's this one I'll be discussing.

Technical Summary of the Panerai Luminor Submersible

The Panerai Luminor Submersible PAM00024 is an automatic using the Panerai OP III calibre. It has 13 ¼ lignes and 21 jewels. It has a Panerai personalized oscillating weight with a Glucydur balance: the Glucydur is used in most high-grade contemporary wristwatches and is an alloy of (mostly) berrylium and copper and has excellent hardness and high stability over a range of temperatures. It also has an Incabloc shock abosorber system, making it one of the most robust of wristwatches.

The Panerai Submersible PAM00024 also comes with a power resrvce of 42 hours and the chronometer is COSC certified.

The watch comes with hours, minutes, small seconds, date, and calculation of immersion time functions. And as you would expect with a divers watch, it has an anti-clockwise, uni-directional rotating bezel with scale graduated for measuring the duration of immersion and ratchet click at minute intervals.

Every Panerai Luminor Submersible wristwatch is water resistant to 300 meters.

The aesthetic qualities of the Panerai Luminor Submersible

The following could also be listed under the technical summary paragraph above, but I feel the following technical pieces of the watch are what also make it very beautiful.

First off, is the case: it is large at 44mm and the PAM00024 comes with polished stainless steel. The slightly squared circular design gives it a unique and contemporary look to it.

The dial is black with a subdial at the 9 0'clock position. The only numerals (Arabic) that at appear on the face are at the 12 and 6 o'clock position. There are hour and minute skeletonized luminescent steel baton hands that complement the black rubber strap. The strap has the Panerai logo, steel buckle and a second, inter-changeable strap for use while diving.

Of course, the most distinctive feature of every Panerai watch is the device-protecting crown; you can recognize a Panerai watch from across a room just from the crown protection device. Maybe this feature is not to everyone's liking, but I think it adds to the distinctive elegance of a Panerai wristwatch.

Quality diving watches are very popular these days. Brands like Tag Hueur, Rolex and Breitling are very popular. When my wife was looking to buy a diving watch, she wanted something a little different that stood out from the crowd and had superb engineering as well as being something beautiful. She settled for the Panerai Luminor Submersible PAM00024. She treasures her Panerai diving watch; and I can't help feeling a little envious.
