When most people think about redecorating the first thing they often envisage is the color of the room. If you're anything like me you also probably aim to do to much and have too many "big plans" as I always have a DIY mind that loves to take over!

Depending on which room is being decorated often affects the color choice that people tend to go for. Each room sets its own mood, whether it is the living area, the kitchen, bedroom, or bathroom. If you are decorating a room in a home that you have lived in for some time the existing furniture can also play a large role in choosing decorating ideas and in particular, colors (unless of course you plan to completely refurnish the room also).

Most people have a color that they are fond of and it often shows when visiting friends or families homes. However, it may be appealing to you to take ideas from two basic colors that are often overlooked - black and white.

Many interior designers will say that every room can benefit from a touch of black as it adds a bit of pizzazz and drama to it. Black is a very sophisticated color that demands attention. You may however choose not to decorate with heavy use of black, but instead to use it sparingly on accessories such as light fixtures, furniture or trim.

Using white in addition to black color in decorating provides a fresh and clean feel and is very elegant. Although it is difficult to envisage the use of these two colors in a room there are in fact many ways that they can be used throughout a home. Flooring for example is just one area that can encompass black and white colors. Black and white marble looks especially good, but so does black and white stenciling and also ceramic tiling.

When using black or white colors, one of my favorite uses is simple white walls with black picture frames and accessories. It is very easy to find plenty of black colored accessories that complement a white room really well, so it isn't hard to accomplish this sophisticated feel on a low budget.

Glass surfaces, such as on table tops, is another good way to show off the use of black and white colors.

There are so many ideas for decorating that you are only limited by imagination. Using simple black and white colors is just one way that a great decorating style can be achieved, which many do not consider. Whichever color scheme you choose you must think long term. After all you don't want to finish decorating and purchase accessories and furniture only to want to redecorate six months down the line.
