Where have all our voices gone?
In the silence of my screams as I race through the nightmares in my mind
Words of warning falling on those that listen but can not hear
The haunting sound of the drums of war like
The calls of Kitty Genovese as she is slain in her NY home Falling to her death as those hear but do not move.
Do we hear now but cannot move or have we deafened ourselves to the tears of the families of those fallen in country so far from home?
Our rich thick arrogant blood mingled with that of Iraq’s men, women and children floods the street
Transforming the arid whiteness of the blazing desert into a flowing red pool of endless tears that no one can see or hear.
“It is so far away...They are our enemy...We must protect our country...We must bring freedom to their world...This is our duty as Christians...We must keep our country safe from terrorism."
The stench of hypocrisy and blasphemy fills the nostrils, choking us on our own self-righteousness
We defame our heroes of 9/11 by calling upon their memory to justify our greed
To fill the bottomless pockets of Haliburton and Bethel.
113,000 Iraqis death, 1800 soldiers death, countless wounded crowding hospitals that can never heal their pain.
Yet victoriously we stand.
“Thank God for George Bush" resounds from our boarders and rings clear through the fear in our heartland's...
And he is reelected.
We inaugurate our leader...five parties, 45 million spent to celebrate his triumph
Not one moment or one dollar spent to remember those who at that very moment are dying in our name.
Boots and candles line the streets, cardboard boxes draped with American flags, the agony of those who have lost it all in a place so far from home
Yet the twins smile cracking their gum, riding down Pennsylvania Ave. in the warmth of a sun that shines only upon them.
Behind police barricades we stand
Reduced to nothingness before our time...No one even glancing over to acknowledges our existence...our insignificance flaunted...we were not even worth a nod or a spot on the 6 o’clock news.
Invisible, with the cold winds of January freezing our tears.
As if we never were!
“Let them eat cake" the theme song as they drive their chariot of glory through the sanctified and homogeneous streets of our country’s capital
The sun blinding their eyes to our agony, the marching band stamping out the murmur of our voices.
Cindy Shehan prostrates herself before the camp of her commander-and-chief.
Blanketed only in her pain
She waits to face our leader
Instead within the compound a snake slithers away
Going deeper and deeper under ground
Deep and deeper into the bowels of the earth ensuring he will never be forced to respond to her questions.
Was my son killed for WMD’s Or was it uranium bought from Niger Was it to better the life of the Iraqis? What is the noble cause you speak of?
Why, Why President Bush was my child killed?
Don’t let his death be in vain
A mere attempt to increase your power.
The feeble response blasted on our airways, safe from all dissension:
“We will stay the course?"
But why? How many more children have to die before you examine your conscious and question your god that has sent you on this mission.
“Honor my child’s memory with the truth" the plea of families desperate to understand.
Their response: “There is no comment."
Wearily I return to the comfort of my solitude.
Time has made my words dull.
I fear that I too will no longer hear them.
Looking within myself and wondering with cowardice
How many pieces of silver will it take
Before I sing hail to the chief or is that Heil Hitler.
This essay is dedicated to the memory of my grandfather, Rocco Crisalli, who died for his idealistic belief that people could live in peace and harmony.

I agree and feel what you are saying, because I care. Some people just don't care and do not have love. Being idealistic does hurt in today's society. Respond to this comment
