Infections caused by the spread of Candida have become an ever more common occurrence, and there are a number of reasons why candida and the infections candida causes are becoming more prevalent.
Firstly, people are living for much longer, and as they get older they usually find that their immune system can weaken over time. This can allow candida yeast infections to flourish and they can become a major problem.
Also, because more and more people are taking antibiotics as they are prescribed to treat infections and illnesses, and many do not complete the course of antibiotics prescribed, they put them self at risk of joining the ever-growing number of cases of candida infections which are being reported.
Often, people find that they suffer from a form of candida overgrowth after taking antibiotics for an extended period of time. They do not realise that antibiotics are indiscriminate in the way that they kill bacteria. So, when taking antibiotics they are often destroying both the beneficial bacteria, which acts to protect the body, as well as the "bad" bacteria. With the removal of the good bacteria, we remove a layer of defence against yeast infections like candida.
Usually, candida infects the skin and its name refers to the white color of the organisms that are found in the Candida culture. It can also be know as candidiasis, candidosis or moniliasis, and in order for it to survive and thrive it needs a living host (i.e., the human body).
Normally candida can live in the body without any ill effect, but once our immune system and defences become compromised it can lead to an overgrowth of Candida, which can cause many health complications.
The remainder of this article looks more closely at some of the particular forms of candida infections, which can impact us, and the complications that may arise if not adequately treated.
Candida is present in the oral cavities of about half the world's population and people who wear dentures will most probably have candida present. However, it does not mean that they will suffer any ill effects from it. Candida can be present without causing any side effects. It is only when the body chemistry changes that candida will be provided with the opportunity to multiple and suppresses the other microorganisms present. This imbalance can then lead to oral thrush.
Unfortunately, anyone can suffer from this form of candida, and in extreme cases candida can make its way into the oesophagus. Once there it can cause candida oesophagitis, which if not treated correctly could result in a person getting recurrent bout of infections. It may also lead to the infection spreading to other parts of the body. In very extreme cases the symptoms can be so severe that the person could end up with holes in their oesophagus.

Other forms of candida infection which are prevalent in today's society are vulvovaginal candidiasis (candida which infects the vagina), balanitis (which can inflame the head of the penis) and intertrigo (which is a candida infection found in the folds of the skin).
Again, if any of these are either left untreated or treated incorrectly they can lead to further complications. This is especially true if the infection is allowed to enter the bloodstream. This can cause problems to other organs in the body such as your kidneys, lungs, heart and eyes.
Also, if it enters the brain candida can cause seizures as well as acute changes in a person's mental functions and how they behave. So it is important to understand and take the best advice when identifying ways to relieve any infections candida causes.
