Runescape scams exist in the game due to basic greed inherent in human nature. It is the same in the real world as any virtual world, greed, pure and simple. Jagex have addressed the issue of scamming in runescape and have made it part of their overall rules to try and limit the impact on the overall playing experience.
Rule 2: Item Scamming:
Item scamming in runescape is the most widely abused scam in the game. It can take many forms from the simple trust scam where one player will request to hold items belonging to another player in order to gain trust to the more complex multiple person item scamming. Subsequently, in the basic runescape trust scam , when more valuable items are traded, the scamming player will eventually just logout with a highly treasured item belonging to the victim. Players should be able to spot the basic scams very quickly and should report them immediately through the runescape report abuse feature in the game.
Rule 3: Password Scamming:
Runescape password scams have been about since the game began, however, as technology has advanced so has the means at scamming passwords. All players should be aware of the basic protection measures to help minimise the chances their passwords can be compromised. Basically this means to never eagerly click on a link provided in any correspondence without knowing the person. Even when knowing a person, caution must be taken to ensure that all the latest anti-virus definitions are installed and that your computer is not left open to keyloggers.
Rule 2 and rule 3 are clearly labelled in an effort to fight runescape scams, however, there are other rules in place to try and limit the overall impact of scams. Practically all the rules can cover some form of scam or attempted scam ie Rule 7: You must not use 3rd party software or Rule 12: Real World Item Trading.
In the case of rule 7, 3rd party software should always be treated with caution as it can normally be infected with keyloggers or a virus. Whereas rule 12 is aimed at preventing both virtual and real monetary losses through making it illegal to trade items or accounts via auction sites or any online stores.
Overall, Jagex may have made the rules and constantly clarify them, however, players will still try and get around the rules and can only blame themselves when they become the next victim on a runescape scammers hitlist. The message is clear, play it safe and play by the rules.
