Today's knowledge of human potential, as well as results in success motivation studies, provide solid evidence, if not unquestionable proof, that it is our thinking; the thoughts that we put in our minds (and allow to stay there), that determines whether we succeed or fail in reaching specific goals or in the performance of the majority of the activities in which we participate daily.
Think one way, and you attract the conditions which that type of thinking indicates. Think another way, and you attract an entirely different set of conditions. Conditions are created by thoughts much more than conditions create thoughts. It’s the simple law ofattraction, a concept which has been recently discussed in detail by Rhonda Byrne in her popular book and DVD entitled “The Secret".
If we place a thought in our heads that we are poor in the performance of a specific activity, the chances are we will perform poorly - if for no other reason than - we expect to perform poorly and therefore we subconsciously adjust our behavior to be such that we remain consistent with our self-image and expectations.
If you have ever played tennis, golf, or shot pool much better than you ever have, or much better than you thought you could, you get a feeling that you are playing over your head and you begin to "fold" in the clutch. Anxiety sets in and the tension begins to self sabotage your efforts until your score is reduced to a more comfortable level.
If we place thoughts of being the best and believe that we are capable of even higher achievements than we have ever experienced, and expect to perform at ever increasing levels, we will feel comfortable with the behavior that reaches for that excellence that our self-image is expecting. When competing in a competition that you always end up winning, you feel comfortable knowing the tension is on your opponent, and your self-assured expectations of winning again (because that is the way it always has resulted) provided the calm behavior and clean thinking necessary to win.
When you believe, your mind finds ways to do. When you believe something is impossible, your mind goes to work for you to prove why. But, when you believe, really believe, something can be done, your mind and the universe helps you to find the ways to succeed. Belief is the faith that has to be involved in a given situation in order to achieve positive results.
Quoting a verse from the Bible we see the mental attitude we need for a more powerful life has been known for centuries: " Go thy way and as thou hast believed...so it be done unto thee."
This simple statement of faith is like a two-edge sword that cuts both ways. Faith is the key that unlocks the door to success for every human being or it is the lock that keeps that human being from ever experiencing success. As a positive power, faith is the promise of the realization of things hoped for and unseen, but as a negative power, it is the premonition of our deepest fears. There is no such thing as the absence or the lack of faith - There is simply the replacement of faith with its opposite belief - Despair.
In closing, I would like to share a poem I came across while attending college.
"If you think you are beaten, you are;
if you think you dare not, you don't;
if you like to win but think you can't
it's almost a cinch you won't.
If you think you'll lose, you're lost,
for out in the world we find
success begins with a fellow's will
it's all in the state of mind.
If you think you are out-classed, you are,
you've got to think high to rise;
you've got to be sure of yourself before
you can ever win a prize.
Life's battles don't always go
to the stronger or the faster man;
but sooner or later the man who wins
is the man who thinks he can."
Much has been written about the self-fulfilling prophecy which could be thought of a statement that is neither true nor false, but is capable of becoming true if believed. In short, "If you think you can or think you can't, either way, you're right." It’s all about the law of attraction.
