There are many reasons why some people resurface there existing concrete driveways. Starting from damaged existing concrete, pre-sale or pre-valuation for financial institutions, safety or just plain tired of boring old grey concrete. There are also a number of different applications for existing concrete driveways.

There is concrete paint ( not recommended), epoxy coating, resealing (colour & clear) and there is also spray pave known as spray top, spray on pave ECT. Now the next question is “what is the best for me?

If you are selling your home and are just looking for a neat and tidy appearance and if your existing concrete driveway is in reasonable condition then a cheap and easy alternative is resealing.

Resealing will make the area clean and fresh and will give the concrete that shiny look, if your driveway is on a slope you may consider asking your contractor to add “glass beads" as they will add some grip as sealer is slippery when wet.

I am not the best person to ask on concrete paint as I spend most of my time removing it prior to spray paving and I think it is very slippery once wet and therefore is not the best for sloping or worn driveways, as if your driveway’s texture has worn it may border on unsafe.

There is also epoxy resurfacing I cannot comment on this product as I have never applied it to any surface or I have never removed it, so in fairness to the product I will save my opinion.

For me you cannot beat a driveway resurfaced with spray pave resurfacing and one of the main reasons for my thinking is that your driveway is the entrance to your home and in most cases it is the first thing people see, and you know what they say about first impressions.

Spray pave not only allows you to add colour, patterns but more importantly texture so for a sloping driveway it will put the grip back into the slip. As spray pave is cement based you can apply a myriad of patterns and also multi colours to your driveway. There is also the maintenance side of things spray pave applied correctly should last as long as the concrete it is applied to the only ongoing maintenance should be a reseal every 12 months, which should be done to all forms of decorative concrete.

If the issue is safety then you can’t go past spray pave as the material is sprayed on under high pressure and therefore has a very non-slip texture. If you are resurfacing your existing concrete driveway and it is on a business premises that will take customers or staff you may be able to claim a tax refund as you may be creating a safe entrance, but please check with your accountant.
