The efficiency of some medicine really depends on what you eat and drink. Some foods can counteract medicine. Of course, you should always consult your doctor. I just suggest a few common sense guidelines.

If you take cardio-vascular medicine, avoid high calorie foods. Substitute fatty meat or mushroom soups for vegetable soup. You should exclude coffee, cacao, chocolate and spicy or salty foods. Fish, sea food, vegetable oil, vegetables, fruits, yogurts and diary will be great for your diet.

If you have to take pain-killers, avoid spicy foods, alcohol and fish. Include oatmeal, rice, soup-purees and desserts made of fruit, berries and potato (or corn) starch in your diet.

Antibiotics do not go well with milk, cheese, sour cream and yogurts. Eat less meaty foods. Instead, you should include juices, fruits, vegetables and nuts in your diet. These foods will help you fight infections. But after you are done with the course of antibiotics, do not forget to restore your stomach’s micro flora. Drink yogurts with live bacteria daily for at least a couple of weeks.

If you were prescribed an anti-inflammatory medicine or bronchial medicine, avoid wines, smoked meat, spinach, bullion, radish, eggs, bananas, strawberries, canned foods and sorrel because these foods promote the formation of histamine. Instead, eat cereal, grapes, figs and dried apricots because these foods will make it easier to cough up phlegm. Carrots, beets, Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, beans, squash, apples, pears, peaches and plums will protect your stomach mucous.

If you take diuretics, avoid coffee, black tea, cacao, chocolate, salty and spicy foods, salty and smoked products and alcohol (especially beer) because these foods retain fluids in your body. You should drink the juice of grapes, carrots and cucumbers. Eat turnip, parsley and radish.

Do not take diarrheic medicine with any other medicine. Also, avoid strong black tea, chocolate, pears and cheese because these will counteract the medicine. You should eat spinach (it will help digestion) and beets, squash, sweet plums, dried plums, cucumbers and whole grain bread.

If you were prescribed sleeping pills, avoid coffee, strong black tea, chocolate and alcohol. Eat dried grapes, melon, or 1 table spoon of honey before you go to bed or 1 glass of warm milk with a few walnuts.

If you are getting a treatment that affects the formation of your blood, you should exclude strong black tea, coffee, chocolate and cacao. Eat beef liver, beets, squash, apricots, apples, buckwheat cereal and quinces. Drink carrot juice and spinach juice.

Yulia, this is an excellent article! So many people do not realise the dangers present with the wrong drug and food interaction. I believe the pharmacist tells them and labels the bottle but for whatever reason, patients do not absorb the real danger. Having sold ethical and proprietary pharmaceuticals, I am aware but I am an exception not the rule.
