A Labradoodle is a cross between a Standard Poodle and a Labrador Retriever, producing and taking the best traits and qualities from each of the two breeds. Some people label them as a Designer - Dog. But they are so much more than that. Labradoodles were first bred in Australia, some thirty years ago, to be used as helpers, companions, and guides for people with physical challenges or blindness.
Even while swimming in your pool or pond, or in rainy weather, these wonderful dogs have very little to - no foul dog smell, and the majority have very little to no shedding. Labradoodles are very loving dogs. And very mild tempered and easy going. Not known for rambunctiousness or rowdiness.
They are so very intelligent, and we have heard that some people actually have to spell out words in front of their “doodle" to keep a secret!! As stated previously, because of their high intelligence they are highly sought after by many organizations that train companion dogs for the elderly or physically challenged, and also some Police Departments are using them for their drug sniffing capabilities as well.
They love to play with their family, and take long walks with you. They are fantastic with all ages of children, and are very protective of their family. Some doodles have curly coats and others just wavy. Some are very fleecy, or even wooly. But they are definitely a Wash and Go kind of breed. No fuss, no muss !! Or you can groom their beautiful coat to a length that you find fits your family and lifestyle. Of course, it’s always good grooming habits to brush them, at least on a weekly basis to ensure a healthy pet, and a healthy, beautiful and shiny coat. They are really good for people with allergies because of the Poodle's trait of a non-shedding and non-dander coat. The Labradoodle's coat is consistently low to no shed, and low to no dander. But of course no reputable breeder can guarantee that their puppies are 100% non-allergenic, because it still depends on the individual’s allergy severity, etc.
There are levels of Labradoodles as briefly mentioned above. They are called classes. They are distinguished as follows:
• An F1 is from a Standard Poodle bred with a Labrador Retriever (AKC is preferred on both original parents.)
• An F1B is an F1 bred to a Standard Poodle. (Also called a back cross).
• An F2 is two F1’s bred to each other. (Also called a double doodle).
These generations go up to a 6 in classes. But you will find the most consistencies of the two breeds in the F1 and F1B classes, which are also considered 1st and 2nd generation.
The breed standard that has been set up by the Australian and American Labradoodle Association is as follows:
• Standard: 21 to 24 (not over 25) inches from the wither to ground measurement. The ideal size for the female is 21-23 inches and the male is 22-24 inches. Weight range tends toward about 50-65 lbs.
• Medium: 17 to 20 (not over 21) inches from the wither to ground measurement. The ideal size for the female is 17-19 inches and the male is 18-20 inches. Weight range tends toward about 30-45 lbs.
• Miniature: 14 to 16 (not over 17) inches from the wither to ground measurement. There is no correlation between height and sex in the Miniature size. Weight range tends toward about 15-25 lbs.
Labradoodle colors offer a wide option. The following are the most common available: Red, Chocolate, White, Silver, Variations of Cream, Apricot, and Black, which is our favorite!
So as you can see there are so many reasons why we LOVE Labradoodles!! Labradoodles, loving bundles of joy!! Doesn’t your family deserve the best? This author thinks so.

good information. how would i know by looking at a puppy if it will shed? Respond to this comment
» left by Lori Killinger(273) Lori Killinger (1 year 224 days ago.)
Hi Moby, thank you for taking the time to read my article. There is no way to guarantee 100% if the puppy will shed any, or some, or not at all. If you have ever been around a Labrador, the Labradoodle puppy will shed less than that. Normally the F1B puppy, or 2nd generation, will shed the least. Because it is a cross with 75% Poodle and 25% Labrador. However, the amount is really individual and determined by the puppies type of coat. Generally, the curlier the coat on the Labradoodle, the less shedding it will have. The Labradoodle puppy will not have it's adult coat until they are approximately 10 months old. And by the way, because they are considered a large breed dog, should remain on a Premium Puppy food until they are 24 months old. This will help not only with the quality of their coat and skin, but also with their joints, bones, and proper muscle development. If I can be of any further assistance, please contact me at www.lovelabradoodles.com Have a nice day!! Respond to this comment
