I have a border collie, a snake, three teenagers, three adults, and a puppy in my home. We just recently had to put our black lab to sleep. Last July, I was turning fifty, and something went a little haywire in my brain. (Of course, I might have been blaming it on my impending birthday!) I ordered thirty or a hundred pair of earrings off the Internet. All with healing stones and crystals, wanting all the help I could get! It was so much fun getting a package or two a day. They were all so unique and beautiful. I guess that was the feeling I was looking for. Now I need to get my ears pierced. Just kidding.
Then, I decided I wanted a dog. The haywire lingered. Long ago, it was understood that when our two dogs passed, we would never get another one. I was tired of cleaning up dog hair. I thought, "Why don't I get a small dog? I've never had a small dog." I thought it would be fun to have a little playmate. So, I went on the Internet, and looked for cockapoos. There were none, or none I could afford, so I e mailed a woman who had maltipoos. They are hypo allergenic, and don't shed! She had two males, and I could see them Saturday. They would be between five and seven pounds. Perfect. I was so excited, I couldn't wait for Saturday to come. It arrived, and off I went to Wayne.
A disgruntled man, who immediately told me the showing didn't start until 11, let me in. (it was 10:30-I wanted that dog!) I explained that I lived far, and didn't know how long it would take me. Questionable-I had map quested it. But on my own, I really didn't have a clue. And there could have been traffic! As I was thinking that I was in a stranger's house in Wayne, a long way from home and safety, a woman comes up the stairs with a puppy under each arm. Adorable balls of light tan fur. I pointed to the one on the right, and said, "I want that one." She looked at me in bewilderment. "No one has ever picked out a puppy that fast. And I've been a breeder for thirty five years." Hey-when you know, you know. I was immediately bonded to this pup. I paid her, we left, he was quiet on the way home, and i have adored every minute with him since.
He understands everything I say, because I'm always with him, and I talk to him. He sleeps on the bed-oh, was that my voice I heard? "No dog will ever sleep on the bed!" And none ever has, except when the kids closed their doors, I found out! I always wondered why there was so much black hair in the lint catcher. He has the best life I can imagine a dog, or anyone having. Kids and adults showering him with love and affection every day of his life. He has a toy in every room. He has treats in every room. He has a place he sleeps in every room. My bed, my son's beanbag chair, my other son's chair, my daughter's bed. He's a little bigger than the woman said, ten pounds, but really the perfect weight-not so fragile.
He has livened up our other dog, which is twelve. At first, she didn't let little Benji near her, but within a short time, they started playing together. They run all around the fenced in yard. Sometimes, in figure eights. Good exercise for both. And as I sit here on my computer, I turned around and saw the cutest thing. My border collie, has somehow fit her medium to large frame, (well, most of her) into Benji's bed and is fast asleep. And Benji wants it back! He's looking at her, making some kind of chirping sound. Well, I guess we'll be going to Wal-Mart for a bed for Sasha.

Susan Thom is the mother of three children, two sons, 17 and 21, and a daughter 22. Writing calms her, and gives her a place to go. By herself! Clears the head and gets it out. She lives in a rural area, with a lake and mountains, her son and her partner, and has loved writing since she was a child.
She certainly hopes you enjoy her take on life, and her style of communicating that in stories.
She has been on a journey of self discovery for twenty years, and has learned many things about the human mind, and how to maintain some semblance of calm and peace within.
If someone reads one of her stories, and relates to her feelings, and maybe gets a suggestion on how she dealt with them in a positive way, that would be the ultimate gift of her writing.
