Diuretics are probably one of the most common medication used to treat people suffering with high blood pressure. Using a diuretic for high blood pressure relief, along with associated medication can be effective at combating the symptoms of hypertension and bringing blood pressure back to within normal range.

As well as being used to treat high blood pressure diuretics are also used for treating other illnesses such as heart failure, edema and some types of poisoning.

Although the terms relating to diuretic are broad it generally refers to a substance which causes the kidneys to remove excess water and salt from them the body. There are various kinds of diuretics and each one of them works on a different part of a person's kidneys.

The three types of diuretics used with high blood pressure treatment are as follows:-

1. Thiazide

2. Loop

3. Potassium Sparing

Although each one of these has a different mechanism, they are designed to change the way our kidneys handle the amount of salt, water and other substances that pass through them.

There is a number of side effects associated with diuretics usage. The most common side effects are as follows: -

1. A person tends to find that they urinate more often than is normal.

2. The balance of electrolytes found in their body becomes unbalanced.

3. Their blood sugar levels increase.

4. They may feel dizzy.

5. Their mouth may become dry.

6. Another possible side effect through the loss of fluids from their body is headaches.

7. Also they may find that they actually become thirsty once they commence taking this particular type of medication.

A number of these side effects can be counteracted if the occur.

Diuretics are often used in conjunction with other high blood pressure medication, and help to get the patient in a stable position.

Natural diuretics are available from health stores and some of them can be effective in mild cases of elevated blood pressure. Also, changing diet can have the effect of reducing salt and increasing urine flow.

Although diuretics and the other medication that can be prescribed by the doctor can positively reduce the blood pressure levels, it is important that you get to the root problem that caused the elevated blood pressure levels initially.

Although there is no one medical reason for the cause of high blood pressure, there are some conditions, medications and lifestyle choices that have been identified to increase the risk of high blood pressure.

For instance, if a person smokes, has a poor diet, or is obese, does not exercise sufficiently, or is a heavy drinker of alcohol, then they are at greater risk of hypertension.

There are also some medication and medical conditions that can effect blood pressure, including taking steroids and contraceptive pills, kidney disease, and narrowing of the aorta.

Although, taking a diuretic for high blood pressure relief, along with other medication can bring quick relief, for lasting relief there is often the need for lifestyle changes, including changes to diet, exercise regime and habits. Remember to consult your doctor before making big changes to your eating and exercise habits.
