You are probably aware that Saw Palmetto is commonly used to help relieve prostate problems, but is taking saw palmetto for high blood pressure something that will help?

Saw Palmetto, Sabal or Sereona Repens as it is sometimes called, is an evergreen palm and is found in the South-Eastern parts of the US. It is the berries of this plant, which are used for medicinal purposes and has for many centuries now been used to treat urinary problems and today it is now being used to treat men suffering from BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia).

There has been some anecdotal evidence put forward that saw palmetto can reduce blood pressure too, so this article will explore this idea further.

In saw palmetto there is a compound known as beta-sitosterols which is a fatty acid and is known to regulate hormone levels in men and women. Often this will lead to an improved appetite, a healthy metabolic rate, and stronger glandular tissues.

Saw palmetto also seems to stimulate the immune system and it also helps reduce a person's stress levels, which then, it is proposed, can lower the risk of them developing high blood pressure.

However there are a number of herbal specialists who believe that saw palmetto could actually interfere with blood pressure medication, especially medications which interact with hormone levels.

Therefore it is very important that before you consider using saw palmetto for reducing high blood pressure that you discuss the matter carefully with your doctor. If you decide to go ahead and try saw palmetto log the medications you take each day and be watchful for any side effects that may occur, and if there are they should be immediately be reported to your doctor.

It is worth noting that although there are numerous medications and natural solutions that can help reduce blood pressure, it is important that the cause of the high blood pressure is understood and resolved. If this is not done then the problems can reoccur later on.

Further research is required to identify if saw palmetto for high blood pressure is a good treatment option. In the mean time there are many other options available to reduce blood pressure.
