Anyone who has gone into a craft supply store has seen the isles of greeting card supplies, idea books and embellishments for you to design and create your own homemade greeting cards. With a little time, money and some effort- anyone can create a greeting card.

Greeting cards can be made with so many different items. Rubber stamps, clip art, paint, markers, pencils, magazine clippings and numerous embellishments.

If you want your card to become a keepsake...the card that you give to someone should reflect everything about them. A card should be personal. Whether you make a card or have someone else make a card, it should be more than just a bunch of words with a picture.

So, let's create a "keepsake".

1. What is this card for? Birthday? Special occasion? Holiday? Or my personal favorite, "just because". When you answer this you can then decide if it should be serious or humorous.

2. Who is your card for? Name is a great way to personalize.

3. What should the card say? There are numerous sites on the internet to get free non-copyright 'verses'. But, why? Why not create the words yourself. People enter our lives with a flurry of memories. Can you remember this person saying something special to you, or did something special for you, or shared something special with you? Then put it into words, simple words. You don't have to be a writer or poet. Describe this memory and how much more 'important' they made you feel, or how important it is to have them as a part of your life.

4. How should you decorate this card? If we were keeping with the memory idea above then you could put something in reference to it. Otherwise, a great place to start is with the question- "what does the receiver enjoy?" Music? Cats? Snowboarding? Whether you are drawing, stamping, using clip art or pasting pictures, utilizing a persons hobbies or joys of life is a FANTASTIC way to personalize a keepsake card.

5. Here are some questions to ask yourself about the receiver to help your creative thinking. What are their hobbies, occupation, favorite song, food, sport, et cetera? Do they collect something? How about memories you've shared, dreams/goals that they've shared with you? Any of these ideas can fit in to a birthday, special occasion, just because, holiday and many other themes.

If you focus on the individual, I guarantee this card that you put so much effort in to will be a cherished keepsake.
