Located in the area of Karavomilos near Sami, lies the Melissani cave which is undoubtedly among Kefalonia's most breathtaking attractions.
This unique cave has much to offer to each and every visitor. Discovered in 1951 by speleologist Yiannis Petrohilos, Melissani cave also includes a beautiful lake with crystal blue waters which is 22 metres below ground level and its maximum depth is about 30 metres.
During the previous century, an earthquake caused the cave's roof to collapse and fall into the lake, therefore leaving an open space at the very top of the cave where sun rays enter and touch the lake's surface, creating reflections and amazing shades of blue. Also, part of the roof has formed a large rock at the darkest end of the lake, which actually resembles a very small island. One can experience all the above by taking a short tour on one of the small boats and enjoying the sights and story about each stalactite, the rocky formations on the interior walls of the cave which all resemble some kind of figure.
The cave also has its own story. According to mythology, during ancient times it used to be a place of worship to god Panas and nymph Melissanthi. Blinded by passion, Melissanthi took her own life by drowning herself in the lake, as Panas did not requite her love.
The dolphin-shaped stalactites which have now turned into stone, symbolise the dolphins that she would send to deliver her messages to Panas.
However, Melissani cave is definitely one of the places which make Kefalonia a very popular destination, worthy of visiting.
