I'm sure you have come up with a great idea in your life. In fact you might even have been in a situation where your great idea was developed by somebody else, totally divorced from your idea, and you see them making a lot of money from it. You think to yourself, every time you see it, you should have been the one making all of that money. But you aren't.
It is totally probable that you have talent in some field or other. Yet you have not developed this talent to make you money. Possibly you paint very well, or are able to write the lyrics and melody to good songs, you have a fabulous singing voice, you have green fingers and everything you touch grows, you have an eye for design and can decorate a home. The list goes one. Everybody has a talent of some sort. Yet you haven't been able to make money with your talent and are still typing letters or stacking supermarket shelves.
Why do you take second best as a given? What is hindering your success. It's easy. You are scared of rejection which means you don't ask for help, support, advice, funding to further your career and any number of other opportunities to assist in developing your vision of yourself as an artist, musician, horticulturist or interior decorator. With other words, whatever your talent, you are too scared to pursue it with passion.
Yet there are many instances where people think they will get lucky and it will be given to them. The reality TV shows are prime examples of this. A family friend entered the Pop Idols competition. Much to her surprise she got through the first heats. She had been singing for a while and had been singing with a band before, so she had some advantage. In her mind, this competition was going to launch her into a music career. She gave up her full time job and under the greatest hardship she continued in the competition.
She made it to the final three, with some strange twist and turns and as with all of these 'popular' competitions she was at the mercy of public opinion. She bravely faced all of it, because the goal seemed to be worth all of the public abuse she got and the financial hardships she went through. This competition would provide her with the momentum to reach her dream. To a certain extent it did, and for a while she made a fair living. And she continues to produce excellent songs and her voice is as powerful as ever. However, the momentum has slowed again.
I think our family friend is as talented and more so than for instance Lily Allen who must rate, for me and it is of course subjective, as a singer who has achieved beyond her singing talent. But what Lily Allen can do is market herself. I would not be surprised if Lily Allen isn't making more money from her little foray into the fashion industry, than her singing. What our friend lacks is the courage to market herself because she is afraid of rejection. So what she has done is make do with some second rate agents, rather than working her career on her own.
If one looks at the stories of the rich and famous, you will find that they were not afraid to ask, more likely, demand what they needed in order to get where they wanted to be. The successes don't just come or drop into your lap. You have to ask, and you have to be prepared to accept rejection along the way. It's the ones who ask and keep on asking and accepting rejection as just part of the process, who really make it. It's not personal. The person or company who rejects you and your proposal, doesn't think you are bad, or the proposal is dreadful. They just don't have the time, or the money or the right fit with your idea. Somebody out there will have though. So just keep on asking.
