There is much you need to know before you go out and start looking for a video game testing job.  Working as a game tester is certainly not an easy job.  It may not even seem to be very fun at times.  After all it is a job like any other.  Although, if you do truly love video games then it just may be the perfect job for you.  Like any job video game testing can fun and rewarding.  Working as a game tester is a great place to start in the video game industry.  You can use it as a stepping stone to other positions in the industry.  Designers and programmers often start out with video game testing.  You can do this while you are going to school at the same time.

One of the first things you can do is participate in public beta tests for popular video games.  This will allow you to become familiar with what a game tester actually may do on a daily basis.  The great thing about beta testing games is that it can be done from home in your spare time.  As a bonus, often you will be able to get the final version of the game for free or at a reduced price. You may also be able to work at home for some video game testing jobs but it's not extremely common for this to happen, certainly not for a full time career.  It is possible to find some part-time work at home testing games.

A game tester must have in depth knowledge of the consoles or operating systems that the games he is testing run on.  The game companies will expect that the testers working for them will be able to effectively communicate bugs and other problems.  The main role of a game tester is to find and report these bugs and defects for each game they are testing.  Detailed reports must be filed on how to duplicate each bug, if the developers cannot duplicate the bug you have found they will not be able to fix it.  Therefore as you can see strong verbal and written communication is a must for all testers.

It is really important to remember is that there is no easy way to getting rich.  Testing video games will not make you rich.  Whatever path you take in life will have it's ups and downs. Just keep going and working hard.  If you do this you will succeed in testing video games or anything else you want to achieve in life.
