Making Your Own Crib Bedding: What You Need to Know

If you have lately shopped for crib bedding, you certainly have learned by now that the price tag for a crib or cradle bedding set ranges from a few hundred dollars -- usually the classic bedding sets with simple design -- to a few thousand dollars -- the more unusual ones, with unique or sophisticated designs.

Results from query analyses on the major search engines let to the conclusion that there is a conclusive evidence that the interest in making at least a piece of baby bedding is increasing. The most frequent searches focus on crib bumpers.

If choosing a theme and decorating a nursery are fun and exciting, making your own baby bedding yourself definitely requires energy, dedication, patience and skills. Before you decide to make your crib bedding, following are a few tips that could help you achieve good results:

First of all know how to comfortably handle and operate your sewing machine. Previous experience really helps. Besides, if you want a beautiful set for your baby, you need to plan ahead. Do not improvise. Acquire the necessary information. Try your local library first to keep the cost low.
It is also very important to measure your crib and make a sketch first before defining the amount of material you are going to use. Making a sketch could mean the difference between buying enough fabric for both sides of the bumper instead of one only.

Once your sketch is done, you will have a clearer idea of the scope of your project. You then need to make a list of everything you need before you hit the store. Include fabrics, threads and padding. It is always a good idea to start with the fabric so you can choose the appropriate thread color. If possible choose 100% cotton, soft material.

Now that you are ready to sew, expect spending weeks not days on your project. Completely finish one piece of bedding before starting any work on the next one. As you carry out your project, do consider and implement the safety features. Your baby's safety depends on it. Ensure that the bottom sheet has a tight fit to the crib mattress. If the fitted sheets gets loose and comes off, it will constitute a serious risk hazard to your baby. Also remember that the bumper ties must firmly keep the bumper pads to the crib sides. All of the ties must be short enough to avoid any risk of entanglement.

These simple safety rules are by no means exhaustive and are intended to help you create safe bedding for your little one. Now that you are more aware of this subject, your are now in a better position to determine whether making your own crib bedding is an option for you.
