Do you have a problem keeping your checkbook straight? I do. I have to admit I am 52 years old and still have problems with my checkbook. Or at least I did. About two months ago I made a real mess of my checkbook and racked up $140 worth of bank fees. I don't think I am a bad person. I don't do this on purpose. I just have problems balancing my checkbook.

After paying $140 in bank fees I finally decided I had to figure out a way to keep from doing this again. So following are steps I came up with that have helped me. They may seem a little strange to people who don't have this problem. But that's ok.

First, get a notebook or journal. One big enough to see and write in easily. Put a calculator in it and an ink pen. Take it with you when you go shopping or when you plan on making purchases. Leave it in your vehicle. You don't want to loose it or leave it somewhere. Write down every purchase you make as soon as you get back in your vehicle. This is key. You have to make yourself take the time to do it. When you pay your bills or make deposits write those down too.

Second, keep all your receipts. It helps to have a little pouch or envelope or something to put them all in.

Third, every two or three days sit down at the computer with your notebook and check it against your account online. If there is any amount not written down in your book that is on your account online then make the adjustments.

If you do these three things it will bring great relief. It did to me. It took a little effort to get in the habit but it sure is worth it.
