The latest Harry Potter film is taking in the dollars, according to CNN, as it even topples Spider-Man 2 off its perch. It has become the highest Wednesday single-day ticket sale phenomena in box-office record. And the knock on effect is that the new and last book in the series has seen an increase in orders.

What a great success story this is. Books that have fans queuing and films that add to the entire vibe. The best thing is that the whole hype is about a fairy tale. Sure there are nasties and deaths and all sorts of evils lurking around. But we all know it’s make belief. There is magic, and there are wands and spells and wizards. There is no doubt that this is make belief. And all good fairy tales have to have good and evil. That is the whole point. They are there to make a moral point.

And it is wonderful to see that creativity and imagination have a reward as well. Of course the book publishers and the film moguls are raking in the dollars, but so is J K Rowling the author. It is totally deserved. Too often creativity is sidelined for the logical, mathematical and scientific. The magic of make belief and creativity have had a new lease on life. It’s absolutely wonderful. The world has been starved of this magic, which is why the books and films have become so popular.

We want to be entertained and we want to be taken into a world where we don’t have to worry about horrible things such as the war in Iraq or starving kids. And we don’t want to be entertained, well at least not all the time, with guns and corpses and crime scene investigations and Mafia serials.

These Harry Potter books and films have filled a real need in our lives. And this is why adults have enjoyed these books as much as their kids. And some adults have bought the books without having kids. I know I did and my adult kids as well, although we have drawn the line at queuing at midnight. We leave that folly for iPhones nowadays.

Let’s hope that this creativity will rub off on other areas in our lives. Whether that is some more outrageous films besides the Harry Potter movies, thinking along the lines of the Pirates movies. Or some great new books, maybe fabulous architecture, beautifully designed consumer goods such as the iPhone. More please.

Anja, I like your friendly writing style. I have a couple of recommendations that overlap with the recommendations I gave your other article. Consider the first title that occurs to you a "working title" that gives you an initial direction. When you finish an article, ask yourself, "Does my title grab the reader?" "Does my title speak to the heart of my content? Your first paragraph reflects the title, but the theme or heart of what you have to say is how Harry Potter has brought magic into our lives. How could you rewrite your title to reflect that theme?

You might want to review some grammar basics. I have to keep up with the rules because of my career. If you have been out of school for awhile, it's easy to forget when to use commas or what a sentence fragment is. The ELEMENTS OF STYLE is a classic for writers and is available in paperback.
