I’ve always pondered this abstract thinking, since I was a little girl. I always had to know why things happened, and what they happened for. For some reason, I always knew there was meaning to the period of time we were to spend on this earth, and that meaning was connected to the everlasting. I figured out at an early age that if we were to do good things, from our heart, for ourselves and other people, we would be living this meaning of life.

I have heard of the philosophy of many that we choose what parents we are to be born to, for learning purposes, and when we get here, our journey of learning begins. If we are lucky to have good parents and extended family members to teach us right from wrong, we get a head start at maneuvering through our time here. We learn how not to lie, cheat, steal, bully, be self centered or envious. Once the lessons are taught, it’s up to us to uphold them in our daily lives.

I believe that all of our learning experiences are stepping stones in reaching the highest plane we can, when we pass on to the next level of existence. I picture different levels, with spirits working out what they need to on each level, in order to move up, and closer to having responsibilities even on their higher plane. These responsibilities may be to work on the cure for cancer, or Aids, or other diseases. Once the cure is achieved, other spirits have the responsibility of getting that information into the right brains on earth. There is a story I heard that has spirits coming to God and telling him that the people on earth are bleeding to death, and they need to come up with something to stop this. God tells them to go work on it. They come back, and tell God that they have come up with a Band-Aid, and it will stop the humans from bleeding. God then says to his spirits, "Okay, now go put that into Johnson and Johnson’s head."

So, to me, the meaning of life is to learn as much as we can that will lead us back to who we were always meant to be: kind, caring, compassionate, intelligent, hard working, understanding, passionate, honest, reliable, and loving spirits. The more we learn on earth, and the more good we do here, the higher the plane we start out with in Heaven. Our job is to figure out that anger and hatred and jealousy and frustration and pain are not the feelings we should be feeling on this path to the ever after. Our experiences are meant to make us feel and figure out what way of feeling is better, positive or negative. Do we see past the color of other’s skin, their differences in language and dress and beliefs? Are we understanding that we all have the right to our own belief systems?

I believe the meaning of life is to enjoy to the fullest what our Creator has provided for us, and then, when it is our time to move on, we can start to work on another level, as we have on this one.

Susan Thom is the mother of three children, two sons, 18 and 22, and a daughter 24. Writing calms her, and gives her a place to go by herself! Clears the head and gets it out. She lives in a rural area, with a lake and mountains, and her partner, and has loved writing since she was a child.

She certainly hopes you enjoy her take on life, and her style of communicating that in stories.

She has been on a journey of self discovery for twenty years, and has learned many things about the human mind, and how to maintain some semblance of calm and peace within.

If someone reads one of her stories, and relates to her feelings, and maybe gets a suggestion on how she dealt with them in a positive way, that would be the ultimate gift of her writing.

Good points, Miss Thom. We can never figure everything out in our lifetimes and if we try we can miss so much of living. Maybe all God means us to do is live and leave all the worrying to him.
