Philosophers have pondered this very question since the dawn of time and there have been some really decent attempts to come up with a definitive answer. Many of the answers identified religion and a greater purpose as a key precept to our existence, others talked of serendipitous circumstances resulting in mutation and natural selection. Still others develed into our reltionships, love, virtue and personal growth.

All of these answers focused on some ultimate destination toward which we are developing or striving, whether personally, spiritually or mentally.

I certainly don't have an answer for this question but then neither does anyone else and I don't think anyone ever will.

Religion requires faith, for how can you be tested if you already know the answer. Science dictates a necessity for factual proof without which any argument is but a theory; and so by its very nature science is limited in answering this question because it can neither prove or disprove religion.

Therein lies the key to this question. It is beyond us and most likely it will always be beyond us to answer in any real sense. The best that we can hope to do is to respect other peoples views and opinions on the subject, be the best person that we can be in the short time each of us is given and to bring as much joy to the lives around us as we possibly can.

If at the end, you and those around you can look back fondly on what has been, then there was indeed meaning to your life.
