Maggie and Andy Sorrells are in the news for taking control of their lives. The couple has combined to lose a total of 580 pounds using the Weigh Down weight loss workshop, a faith-based program.
Maggie’s weight peaked at 440 pounds. In four years, she was able to shed 300 pounds and drop from a size 5X to a size 6. Andy tipped the scales at 500 pounds and only took 17 months to drop 280 pounds and go from a size 64 to a size 36. While the weight loss is remarkable, the method has become the true story.
According to CNN, the Sorrells didn’t exercise regularly and still ate whatever foods they wanted. The key, according to Maggie was “persevering. On days I wanted to eat the whole bowl of something -- I had to talk myself through it. The truth was, I really wasn't hungry. Food is so much better when you're hungry."
So what is the Weigh Down workshop? It’s actually been around for quite a while. Created by Gwen Shamblin over 15 years ago, the program is based on the principal that diets have CAUSED or exacerbated overeating in this country. The Weigh Down program teaches people to turn from food when they are eating for reasons other than hunger and turn to God. According to the Weigh Down website, “There truly is a mindset where people have no desire to overeat anymore. We are convinced that Weigh Down has more permanent weight loss testimonies than any other weight loss program on the face of the earth."
Does it work? The truth is a large amount of overweight people are that way because of overeating. Replacing that with something else seems pretty logical. Personally, I see great value in replacing food with God. And 580 pounds sure speak volumes!
