Raleigh, North Carolina's Skyline
When one thinks of Grand Central Terminal, one automatically thinks of New York City. Why, Grand Central Terminal is one of NYC’s most famous landmarks!
City Leaders are now boasting that Raleigh, the state capitol of North Carolina, is now among the Nation’s Top 50 Cities. Raleigh also has a Greyhound station, a transit station at Moore Square and an Amtrak station.
The City Council has signed off on having an architectural firm study the plausibility of creating a Grand Central Terminal in Raleigh. This comes at an exciting time for the city of Raleigh. “New population estimates due to be officially released next week show the Capitol City's population to now be around 368,000 residents, up more than 8,000 people since January. “
With such a population growth, Grand Central Terminal would be beneficial for its residents and surrounding areas. The grand plan would create a shopping-mall-like atmosphere where the services of the local Amtrak, Greyhound, TTA and city buses would meld. Planners are also considering the possibility of a high-speed rail project that might pass through the city.
Mayor Charles Meeker is a forward thinker. He realizes in 10 years or more, a GCT could possibly be too late to even consider. The growth in downtown Raleigh is expected to be up from 1500 in 2003 to approximately 10000 in 2010, according to the Mayor.
HDR Architecture, Inc. is the firm contracted by the city for planning and presenting a development strategy for the multi-modal transportation center. Citizens can remain optimistic but must wait until the summer of 2008. The plans and drawings are to be presented to the City Council next summer.
Raleigh is alive and bursting with expansion projects:
Spring 2008 – A new Convention Center is scheduled to open downtown.
Progress Plaza 2 — Now completed and located on Wilmington Street. The 19-story building includes 366,000 square feet of office space and 23,400 square feet of retail space.
Blount Street Project — 25 acres of State property in the northeast corner of the downtown Raleigh State Government Complex including historic homes, currently being redeveloped and restored.
Fayetteville Street Renaissance — Phase 1 now open! Fayetteville Street is Raleigh's premier address. It has been Raleigh's Main Street since its creation as one of the four streets radiating north, south, east and west from the Capitol.
These are just a few of the "What's Happening in Raleigh?" events and projects. To learn more about this fabulous midsize city's residents, businesses, government and leisure activities, visit one of several
